Vland Sector contains the homeworld of the Vilani, Vland (Vland 1717).
Description
This area is a rich core sector of the Third Imperium and much wealth still flows through its starlanes. The Vilani conquered it nearly ten thousand years ago and it remains culturally monolithic to this day. Even domination by the Rule of Man and the desolation of the Long Night did little to change that. Some rumors still circulate that several other sophont species once resided here who challenged the Vilani, but the history books no longer corroborate these myths.

History & Background (Dossier)
As the former seat of the Ziru Sirka, the area has been a rich center of technology, sophont settlement, and interstellar civilization. The Ancients were once very active in the region and no less than five races of Humaniti called this sector home (one is long extinct). Their homeworlds are distributed throughout the sector. Several lesser Non-Human Races additionally rose to sophonce here.
Native Sophonts: 1105
The following races (sophont species) are believed to have originated within this area:
- Non-Human Races
- Hresh
- Kolzar (Wimorelians) (extinct)
- Qiceteu (extinct)

Historical Eras
General Overview: Vland was the seat of the Ziru Sirka or the First Imperium, the first truly widespanning interstellar empire within Charted Space. As such it was a focal point for Vilani conquerors. A dizzying array of trade routes and wealth channeling mechanisms still lead here.

- (-2404 to -2215): Interstellar Wars
- (-2204): Rule of Man founded
- (-1776 to 0): Long Night

- -489: The newly reformed Vilani Bureaus, after years of debate, resolve to begin expansion of interstellar trade within the Vilani Cultural Region.
- -475: The Zirunkariish corporation is formed on Vland to finance local trade.
- As befits the Vilani character, commercial expansion within the Vilani worlds is swift, while technical progress is slower. Despite this local revival, Vland remains insular, with little exploration or trade occurring beyond the Vilani core.
- Circa -200: Vilani merchants move further afield, slowly rebuilding interstellar trade throughout the Vland and Lishun sectors.
- (-34): Cleon Zhunastu takes a sabbatical tour of the frontier, spending time in Vland, and cultivating ties with Vilani interests, before heading back to Sylea.
- In a public statement, Cleon expresses admiration for Vland's history and customs. While studying at the AAB, he publishes a dissertation: 'The Vilani Imperative: Lessons of the Shudusham Concords'. Cleon wins his hosts over with a spirited statement of their shared heritage.

Politics & Diplomacy (Interstellar Relations)
The Ziru Sirka was once based out of this sector and it remains a Vilani stronghold to this day. It is bordered by the Vargr Extents, where a few non-aligned colonies remain, although few non-Vilani races have ever gained a foothold here; the Thaggeshi are one of them. Cleon the Great made the area into a loyal possession of the Third Imperium, but how loyal is it?

Rifts & Voids
The sector lies on the trailing side of the Great Rift.
- The rift hinders travel and commerce within the region.
- It has placed a boundary on Imperial settlement and expansion within the area.
- Due to its position relative to the Rift, the region is sometimes referred to as being Within The Claw[1].

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map.)
The nature and limits of the rift may be determined by different criteria in different regions.
- Generally, its boundaries are based on jump performance.
- Areas may traditionally be considered rift regions, even though all of their worlds are accessible to ships equipped with high performance drives.
Other Astrographic Features
Worlds, Systems & Sectors (Political Astrography)
This is an area of high stellar density and the near terminus of two of the largest rifts found within Charted Space. Despite these two astrographic impediments, it still rose to prominence and became a major crossroads of interstellar commerce and travel.
