System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

  • Rhylanor, the mainworld.
  • x10 secondary rocky worlds.
    • In order, some of the named worlds outward from Rhylanor and their colonies include: a quasi-satellite of Icarus II ("Lucid"), the dieback colony-world of Schriekrieg, a moonlet ("Ghalash") of the large double-radworld at Icarus V, Radium, Roderick, and the minor near outer-system colony on Idulore. [2] [3] [4]
    • Four additional unnamed worlds lie farther out in the near outer system. [5] [3]
  • x1 planetoid belt, known as the Duria Belt, a planetoid belt in a close outer-system orbit.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Rhylanor is a smallish, normal climate planet with a very thin oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere located in a cluster of three star systems just off the Spinward Main. As such it provides a useful short cut for high-Jump and Hop vessels but is inaccessible to low-rated Jump ships.

It orbits within the star's Habitable Zone, receiving moderate levels of stellar energy.

Chart Orbit HZ Region Detailed.png

Orbital Characteristics:

  • Orbital Distance: 0.36 AU
  • Orbital Period: 118.9 standard days
  • Rotational Period: 11.89 standard days (285.4 standard hours) (Retrograde)
  • Axial Tilt: 15°
  • Average Surface Temperature: 21.3°C

Rhylanor occupies the innermost orbit of its star system, at a distance of 0.36 AU from its primary, with an orbital period of about 118.9 standard days. Both the "Hot" (H+1) and "Inferno"/Inner System regions of the system lie to starward of all of the standard orbits occupied by most star-system configurations. Rhylanor's axis is tilted to the plane of its orbit by approximately 15°. Its retrograde rotational period of 11.89 standard days causes Rhylanor to make exactly ten rotations per revolution about its sun. From the vantage point of Rhylanor's surface, the sun rises in the west and travels eastward, completing one local day every 285.4 standard hours, sunrise to sunrise. [6] [7]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Rhylanor is a Meso World between 5,600km and 7,200km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.32G and 0.46G. The horizon will appear about 3.6km away.

  • Rhylanor has a diameter of about 6400 km, and has a large, dense core, resulting in a surface gravity of about 0.50g. [6] Rhylanor's weak natural gravity is augmented in urban areas by immense artificial gravity grids. Rhylanori technology also defies the planet's weak planetary electromagnetism for the purpose of maintaining its maglev public transportation network. EMP generators are maintained at intervals along the maglev public transportation web. The generators enable maglev to operate on the planet despite Rhylanor's weak natural electromagnetism. [2]

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Rhylanor has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

  • Rhylanor has an N2 / O2 atmosphere with a surface atmospheric pressure of about 0.4 atm.[6] The very thin atmosphere of Rhylanor freely admits stellar radiation from Icarus, making the planet typically hot, averaging 21.3 degrees C. The atmosphere and axial tilt of Rhylanor (15 degrees) combined with its slow relative rotation, however, result in large daily and seasonal temperature fluctuations. Because of these extremes, nearly all Rhylanori own compressors, and frequently carry and use them if they must go outside the pressure-domed cities and enclosures. Those who engage in prolonged exposure to the elements own vacc suits and PLSS systems. [2]

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Rhylanor has 35-45% of its surface covered by liquid water. There will be a number of small seas or one larger body of water. Wilderness refueling is possible. Rhylanor's seas support undersea settlements whose main business is the distillation of valuable ore products that seep forth from Rhylanor's multitude of undersea vents.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

The surface of Rhylanor presents a slate and obsidian color pattern to the observer from orbit due to its rocky composition and mineral-rich oceans, relieved intermittently by immense amber and brown splotches of urban sprawl in various places along the surface. Several impact craters are in evidence on the continents around the planetary surface. One significant crater lies close to the planetary equator, which serves as the location of a "primitive" Llellewyloly colony. One of the primary mountain peaks on Rhylanor is known as Mount Whatsit (a.k.a. "Zhitar").

Lifeform[edit]

Kian

Rhylanor has primitive multi-celled native life (...similar to lichens of a brownish-grey to dark coloration) which maintains some free oxygen in the atmosphere, though it is not enough for humans to breathe without mechanical assistance.[6] Other autotrophic life or foliage that has been transplanted to Rhylanor tends to darker colorations (such as dark green-black or charcoal / brown-black), as these pigmentations are common among life that thrives by utilizing the radiant energy of stars that emit primarily in the infra-red wavelengths, such as Rhylanor's M-type primary. [8]

A large variety of imported flora and fauna inhabit the world. Among these are Kian, native to Prilissa in Trin's Veil Subsector.

World Dossier[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Rhylanor is a member world of the Republic of Regina.

Local Nobility (N)[edit]

Rhylanor, as a member world of the Republic of Regina, holds the estates of three members of the Local Interstellar Nobility.

  • This world is the fiefdom of a minor Duke.
  • It contains the fiefdom of a Count.
  • It contains the estate of a Knight.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Rhylanor has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

Rhylanor Highport
The Old Rhylanor Highport is a self-sufficient sealed habitat sustained by more than 20 bio-domes which maintain its atmosphere and contain sufficient hydroponics bays to support the entire indigenous population as well as livestock. While the majority of the facility is maintained to accommodate human and human-like biological needs, the great diversity of travellers who pass through the station has resulted in the maintenance of a number of Alternate Atmosphere Districts, collectively known as the "Alien Quarter". One of the most famous landmarks on Rhylanor Highport is the "Admiral's Fountain" - an enormous water-spout that issues from the Rhylanor Shipping Tower. The spray dissipates into a fine mist almost 2 km wide which catches the rays of the rising sun over the planetary horizon below, creating an iridescent rainbow that locals refer to as "the Jewels of Rhylanor". [9]
» The Rhylanor Downport is located at the Rhylanor Arcology.
» The Kharginir Arcology and Joliswell Arcology each maintain their own local Spaceports.
» The Kikhimaa City arcology maintains its own small Spaceport. [10]

Point of Interest: Naval Base[edit]

Trade Data[edit]

Rhylanor is a High Technology, High Population world.

Trade Lines with other worlds:

  • Rhylanor is part of the Rhylanor Cluster (also known as the "Rhylanor Trace"). Most trade passes to Rhylanor along the J-2 Celepina-Jae Tellona-Rhylanor link, which then continues along the Rhylanor-Equus J-3 corridor. Some trade also comes to Rhylanor via the Fulacin-Porozlo link.

World Economy (Ex)[edit]

  • Resources: C (very abundant)
  • Labor: 9 (billions)
  • Infrastructure: 9
  • Efficiency: +1

World Infrastructure[edit]

Rhylanor possesses Very Comprehensive infrastructure.

Rhylanor is also a center for industry, commerce and education. The Rhylanor Institute of Technology is a prominent hard-science and technological-research institution, with notable accolades in the fields of robotics and computer engineering and heuristics. The Rhylanor Polytechnic also provides advanced technical education in a number of technology-related fields. The University of Rhylanor boasts a strong hard science and technical curriculum among its many varied and diverse degree programs but is principally a planetary university serving the needs of the local citizenry of Rhylanor. Rhylanor is also home to the prestigious Plankwell University.

Politics & Government[edit]

World Government (G)[edit]

Rhylanor is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

Rhylanor is nominally headed by a monarch who acts as ceremonial head of state. The monarch is not an absolute ruler and operates within strict constitutional guidelines, consulting with his Privy Council whose members are drawn from the planet’s higher nobility. His power is limited by the authority of the other branches of Rhylanor's government. [6]
Rhylanor's government primarily consists of two groups, both of which are filled with Rhylanor's nobles. Membership in the government is either handed down to the oldest child in a noble family after the death of the parent, or granted by elevation due to meritorious service or achievement. [11]
One group is known as the "Three Councils"·, which make laws and determine the guilt or innocence of lawbreakers. Each council is in charge of one area of law. The Council of Rhylanor makes all local laws. The Council of Space makes all laws concerning visitors to the planet and relations of the planetary government to the Imperium and other worlds. The Council of Revenue sets taxes. [11] The planet’s High Court is a small council (drawn from the membership of the Three Councils) whose members inherit their posts. It consists of seven of the highest planetary nobles. These seven Law Lords rule on the most important cases, and also oversee all lower courts for the planet. [6]
The second main group in Rhylanor's government, performing the executive function, is known as the ·"Little Council". Its fifteen members each oversee the activities of the government in one of fifteen administrative areas. Thus separate police and armed forces are organized differently in each area, although all must enforce the same laws set by the Three Councils. [11]

World Law (L)[edit]

Rhylanor has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All blade weapons and firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Military[edit]

The Rhylanor military recruits heavily from the Aslan H’Kua clan of Belizo, a world near Sabine Subsector.

World Population (P)[edit]

Rhylanor has a population of 80,000,000,000 sophonts (tens of billions).

Llellewyloly small.jpg

A significant population of Llellewyloly exists on this world, living out in the open very-thin atmosphere environment somewhat apart from the rest of the sophont-population of the world as a "shadow-population" and comprising approximately 50% of the total world population (roughly 40 billion individuals), who consider Rhylanor to be a homeworld within the Republic. The remaining 50% of the population (approximately 40 billion individuals) consists of humans and other non-human sophonts.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The following languages are most commonly heard:

» Kheilig(h) / Kehlish: Mixed Brythonic-Goidhellic-derived dialect(s) of the local region. [13]
» Khemricg: A Brythonic-derived dialect of the local region. [14]

World Culture [Cx][edit]

  • Heterogenity: 9
  • Acceptance: F
  • Strangeness: 5
  • Symbols: F

Rhylanor has become a somewhat authoritarian society with relatively strict laws in certain categories; most citizens view their government as a form of feudal technocracy. Entry to the world's ruling elite is most commonly gained through power and achievement. Elevation for achievement is generally linked with service to the Republic or to Rhylanor's armed forces, though accomplishments in other areas such as science or entertainment are also rewarded in this way. With a law level of 8, inhabitants of Rhylanor live lives that are governed by many ordinances. Police maintain a visible presence, and citizens are well advised to be cooperative with law enforcement.

World Arts[edit]

Rhylanor has always traditionally been a patron of the arts community, especially live theater and non-digitized performance. [15] The computerized strategy game called Dhage was originally developed on Rhylanor in the sixth century (Old Imperial Calendar). [16]

Urbanization[edit]

Rhylanor Feature Map 2.png

Most of Rhylanor's population live in arcologies (either pressure-dome cities or underground habitats), though many of these are built into hills and mountainsides. Major settlements on Rhylanor include:

The Hhagirnur Arcology is famous as the birthplace of Grand Admiral Olav hault-Plankwell, who later ascended to the Throne of the former Third Imperium as its 15th Emperor and first of the Emperors of the Flag.[17]

The Llellewyloly settlements on Rhylanor generally prefer the open-air very-thin atmosphere environment. Llellewyloly settlements include:

  • Llynhonnaulloely [17]
  • Llygolyballondoor [17]
  • Gweunyllgoontolygololy [17]
  • Baradwysraidantyllew [17]
  • Primitivist Llellewyloly Reserve: A Llellewyloly "primitivist" colony is located in an impact crater at about 30o north latitude and is known to human locals as the "Dandy Reserve". [17] This colony preserves the culture of the original Llellewyloly Colony that thrived on Rhylanor when it was first settled by Humans. No one is quite sure how long the Llellewyloly (who are indigenous to Junidy) have lived on Rhylanor or when they first arrived, or how they got there.

History & Background[edit]

The world of Rhylanor was first officially settled by Imperial colonists during the early waves of Imperial settlement in the Spinward Marches Sector in the 300s, becoming an Imperial Client State not long afterward and completely absorbed as a full Imperial member world by ca 400. The first settlers who arrived on Rhylanor discovered the presence of a non-native sophont species already present on-world at a primitive level of technological development that were later discovered to be the minor race known as the Llellewyloly of Junidy that were native to that same world. As the Llellewyloly of Junidy and Rhylanor were both nearly identical primitive minor races when first contacted, no one was quite sure when the Llellewyloly had initially arrived on Rhylanor or by what means they had got there. Nevertheless, since Llellewyloly preferred the natural conditions provided by the open environment of Rhylanor as compared to the tolerances of Humaniti and similar sophonts, Imperial settlement of the world occurred alongside but apart from the Llelleweloly enclaves in separate regions, the two peoples maintaining distinct side-by-side cultures that did not overlap or significantly interact. In the ensuing centuries with recontact between the Junidian and Rhylanorian branches of the Llellewyloly species, many Llellewyloly have migrated to the Rhylanor outback and colonized the surface regions considered inhospitable to unaided Humaniti, forming a substantial shadow-culture on Rhylanor alongside the more familiar and mainstream cultures of Humaniti and similar sophonts who live under the pressure-domed cities and arcologies of the world. The enduring mystery of the original primitivist Llellewyloly presence on Rhylanor is one that puzzles paleosophontologists to the present day. [19]

Rhylanor was first charted in detail by Imperial astrographers of the Imperial Grand Survey (IGS) during the years of the Imperial First Survey between 300 and 420. By this time Rhylanor had come under the jurisdiction and oversight of the Duchy of Mora. As colonization into the Spinward Frontier continued, Emperor Jerome reorganized the Marches in 522, for the first time creating the independent Duchy of Rhylanor at the same time as the creation of several other Spinward Duchies, raising the 3rd Baron Alkhalikoi of Rhylanor to be the 1st Duke of the 1st Creation of the Dukes of Rhylanor.

During the First Frontier War Grand Admiral of the Marches Olav hault-Plankwell led the March Fleet against the Outworld Coalition of the Zhodani Consulate and their Vargr allies, stemming the tide of the invaders advance into Imperial territory. At the Battle of Rhylanor Duchess Arbellatra Khatami Alkhalikoii, 3rd Duchess of Rhylanor, commanded the system defenses, receiving her commission as a Captain in the Imperial Navy from Grand Admiral hault-Plankwell himself after the battle. Grand Admiral hault-Plankwell eventually smashed the gathered Zhodani/Vargr expeditionary fleet in the climactic Battle of Zivije, crippling the Zhodani capability to prosecute the war fully but also inflicting enough losses on the Imperial squadrons to force a stalemate. The negotiated armistice in 604 allowed the Imperium to claim a large amount of previously unincorporated territory to replace the parts of Cronor Subsector ceded to the Zhodani. Though Admiral hault-Plankwell claimed victory for the Imperium, he simultaneously castigated the central Imperial authority for its lack of support during the war and subsequently led an expedition to Capital and assassinated the Empress Jaqueline I, seizing the Iridium Throne and beginning the Imperial Civil War and the period known to Imperial history as the Emperors of the Flag.

During the Second Frontier War Duchess Arbellatra, now Grand Admiral of the Marches, brought an end to the War, subsequently allowing her in her turn to march upon Capital and bring an end to the concurrent Imperial Civil War as well, leading to her appointment as Regent of the Third Imperium, and later as 1st Emperor of the Alkhalikoi dynasty.

Rhylanor continued to be a repeated focus of Zhodani aggression during the various Frontier Wars fought between the Third Imperium and the Zhodani Consulate. While Rhylanor was certainly a strategic and prime military target of the time, the effort expended by Consular forces in attempting to subdue the world in retrospect seem outsized in comparison to the stated overall strategic goals.

During the 1200s when the "Empress Wave" passed through the Spinward Marches, unlike the rest of Charted Space, a roughly 15pc radius about Rhylanor remained largely unaffected, and nobody is quite sure why even to this day. This phenomenon is what largely permitted the continuation of technological civilization within the coreward half of the Marches, and the eventual establishment and expansion of the current Republic of Regina, of which Rhylanor is a principal member-world.

In the modern era Rhylanor is a Strong World that lies near the rimward edge of the Republic of Regina, maintaining a strong industrial, technological, and military presence. Rhylanor’s TL16 manufacturing is in many ways focused on defense against the particularly dangerous Sabine Empire (Limmu Bukara) in adjacent Deneb Sector. The Rhylanor military recruits heavily from the Aslan H’Kua clan of Belizo, a world near Sabine Subsector.
