Description (Specifications)[edit]
The League of Suns is an interstellar state lying in the coreward half of Jungleblut Subsector, in the heart of the region of balkanized space lying along the rimward edge of Far Frontiers Sector. The area has had Vlazhdumecta communities and Zhodani outposts for millennia, but heavy settlement began in the 300s as Imperial citizens from the Spinward Marches moved into the area seeking new opportunities. The League itself is a little more than a century old, though its worlds have a far longer tradition of cooperation and mutual assistance.
The League currently has nine member systems. It is known as a peaceful region, with moderate laws and a dedication to scientific enquiry.
Territorial Issues[edit]
There are ongoing territorial conflicts with the Descarothe Hegemony.
- The world of DeBeers, in Cabala Subsector, was a League holding until it was lost to the the Hegemony.
- The Hegemony also claims Qarant, though treaty agreements permit both states to operate on the world.
Travel Advisory[edit]
The League have issued warnings to all citizens concerning travel to Hegemony worlds, due to the Hegemony's now-notorious distrust for outsiders, the hostile attitude expressed towards the League, and the strength and zeal of Hegemony military security forces.
Uldor's Reach[edit]
Uldor's Reach is a small Main of twenty-one systems located in the central-rimward part of Far Frontiers Sector. It connects the Four Worlds, the Union of Garth, the Descarothe Hegemony, a few worlds of the League, as well as a number of non-aligned worlds. It underpins the economy of Alzenei, the League's capital.
- An eclectic mix of high cargo capacity, low jump rating vessels move along the Main, carrying vast amounts of goods and commodities between its member worlds.
(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)
- Worlds lying on the main are highlighted in tan.
Government & Politics[edit]
The League of Suns is a loose coalition of systems anchored on the rich world of Alzenei. It is characterized as having a low degree of centralization, which gives local, regional and planetary governmental authorities almost complete control. As a result, the state can have considerable difficulty creating uniform policy. Despite this most issues are resolved amicably, usually through personal meetings between officials, and important strategic decisions can be made.
- The League Of Suns is usually classified as a type of Confederation.
Goals[edit]
- Regional stability (with a generally pro-Imperial stance).
- Guarantee of interstellar trade and commerce.
- Protection from expansionist or aggressive neighbors.
The worlds of the region have traditionally adopted a neutral stance, with the Dominion of Alntzar (and more recently its successor, the Domain of Alntzar) to rimward being seen as the traditional threat. The recent emergence of the aggressive Descarothe Hegemony, to spinward, has forced a drastic reassessment of strategy. Treaty arrangements have been made with the Third Imperium: these provide for Imperial use of local facilities for ships and squadrons operating in the area, in exchange for support against encroachment by surrounding Zhodani clients.
Military & Intelligence[edit]
A generally peaceful state, the League's primary interstellar enforcement arm is the League Survey Service, a scout organization with military appendages.
Most bases, except for that on Kokkelen, are strictly Scout operation centers. Kokkelen Base is home to the LSS naval arm, which has been stationed on Kokkelen for most of the League's history as a check against Alntzar. Recent problems with the Descarothe Hegemony, however, have led to plans to update the scout base on Alzenei to co-equal status.
League Survey Service[edit]
The League Survey Service is the LoS's primary interstellar defense and law enforcement arm. It is organized similarly to the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service and derives much of its equipment from Imperial sources. The LSS has seen service as an Imperial ally in the recent Frontier Wars, as well as being involved in "skirmishes" with the Domain of Alntzar and the Descarothe, as well as the belligerent government of Nirvana. It has also undertaken far-ranging diplomatic and exploratory missions into Beyond Sector and the Vanguard Reaches, and frequently engages in joint operations with both the IISS and the Imperial Navy.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The League as a polity was formed in 988, coming together from among a group of planets that had rebelled against the Dominion of Alntzar in 819 and which held similar values. The League worlds have provided a stable island of peace and prosperity in the region for the past 300 years.
Apart from ongoing problems with the Domain of Alntzar, the Descarothe Hegemony, the government of Nirvana, and, naturally, the Zhodani, the League Of Suns is on friendly terms with many other worlds in its vicinity. It is a patron of the Treaty Association of Urnian, an informal group of planetary leaders that meets to resolve issues within the region, and often supports Imperial interests.
Alzenei, the capital, is noteworthy for its university facilities. League universities are regarded as being amongst the finest in the sector, having co-equal status with several prestigious universities in the Imperium. Prominent among these, of late, has been the League of Suns College of Interstellar Studies (abbreviated to 'LoSCIS').
Dominion Rule[edit]
The Dominion of Alntzar formed during the later 6th century, following the emergence of The Protectorate, and gradually began absorbing surrounding neutral worlds. It received support from the Zhodani and became an ally of the Consulate. During the 7th and 8th centuries the Dominion was the dominant force in the region, controlling 28 systems at its height (including the worlds of the League). It was split by dissent and internal warfare in the early 800s.
It is suspected that Imperial interests were behind this upheaval, as the Imperium and its regional allies benefited greatly from the diminishment of the Dominion's strongly pro-Zhodani government. The collapse of the Dominion and the subsequent weakness of this flank of the Zhodani Consulate was a significant strategic factor during both the Third and Fourth Frontier Wars.
