Manticore is a poor, nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often develop intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
  • It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Carcosa Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
  • This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
  • This is a cold world with an overall climate that is at the lower temperature range of human-congruous sophont endurance.
  • A Prison World, exile camp, or prison camp for criminals or other exiles is located upon this world in addition to other points of interest.
  • This world was once known as Toshiba.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)

Stellar Data

Manticore is a binary star system.

  • Both are red main sequence stars.
Manticore has two stars in the star system.

System Data

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data

Manticore is tidally locked to its primary star.

  • The stars are always high in the sky on the bright face, they hang on horizon in the twilight zone, while the cold dark face is in permanent darkness.
  • The world experiences libration - a regular wobble - as it orbits, causing the stars to move in the sky.

It orbits towards the outer edge of the star's habitable zone.

Mainworld Size (S)

Manticore is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Manticore has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. This atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds, which requires the use of a Filter Respirator Combination Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Manticore has 05-15% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

The world has small polar ice caps and a lot of craters dotting the surface. The craters are something of a mystery.

History & Background (Dossier)

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Manticore is a Prison World. It is unpleasantly cold with a very thin atmosphere that has a carbon dioxide taint.

Manticore is administered by Diaspora Securities LLC, a corporation that holds the contract to run the world on behalf of the Confederation. The corporation processes incoming prisoners, assigns them to a location, and provides the opportunity for work – those who decline are denied all but the most basic supplies and privileges. They also manage the distribution of food and water rations planetwide.

The Corporation begrudgingly allows travellers to visit its limited downport, but does not typically allow access to prisoners without documented authorization.

  • Travellers have been invited to corporate events and dinners on occasion.

World Starport (St)

Manticore has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)

Manticore has a population of 50,000 sophonts (tens of thousands).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
  • The corporate and administrative population (around 30% of the population, or about 15,000 individuals) is entirely Solomani human.
  • The prison inmates (about 70% of the population, or about 35,000 individuals) is an especially wide cross-section of sophonts.

Urbanization

There are 40 small urban centers spread across the surface, with each containing between 1000 and 2000 individuals. These are typically located near one or more mining sites, and linked by a network of heavy rail lines.

Linguistic Topography

The most commonly heard languages are:

World Technology Level (T)

Manticore possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Advanced automobiles.
    • Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
    • Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
    • Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government (G)

Manticore is governed by a Corporate Polity, having a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. Essentially, this is a "company town" (or world). The typical corporate-run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families, including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.

World Law (L)

Manticore has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Trade Data

World Economy

Manticore has a prison economy, with labor focused on geologically exploring the surface for extractable resources and mining available ores.
