The HD/HSB-class System Defense Vessels are a defensive spaceship supraclass.

• System Defense Boats (SDBs) are generally considered paramilitary vessels even when in military service since they don't perform an offensive role.
• SDBs are grouped as H-class Defense/Security Vessels, and include both smallcraft and bigcraft.
• They are smaller non-starships specifically intended for defensive operations inside a star system.

• System Defense Vessels (SDVs) are larger and share similar mission roles with Monitors. But whereas Monitors normally remain near their station and thus tend to be constructed with low tactical mobility and heavy armor, SDVs tend to have a wider range of mission parameters and thus tend to have a wider range of tactical mobility and are more varied in their specifications.
• SDVs come in a number of guises: capital and subcapital ships (monitors), dreadnoughts (supermonitors), sentries, as well as other bigcraft and support vessels.
• They are non-starships specifically intended for defensive operations inside a star system.

Description (Specifications)

Most System Defense Boats (SDB's) range in size from 100 to 1,000 tons and are constructed at all tech levels from TL-7 to 15. Vessels between 1,000 and 5,000 tons are more properly classified as Very Light or Light System Defense Vessels (SDV's), though Very Light SDVs are ocassionally called "Heavy System Defense Boats". They have a variety of specific mission subtypes.

Strategy & Tactics (Doctrine)

SDBs most often operate according to predetermined plans designed to optimize their defensive potential. SDBs are typically stationed at the vital points of a system including gas giants, asteroid belts, major worlds, and so on. Because SDBs usually have no jump drives, shifting them from system to system can be a problem. Some types have jump shuttles which fit to the craft and provide jump capability. Another method is simple transport in large bulk cargo containers; the SDBs are loaded into 10,000-ton or 20,000-ton bulk carriers for the multi-parsec journey. This method, of course, is not recommended if immediate combat is expected at the destination.
