The Vernon Powell class System Defense Boat is a defensive warship.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

It is a vessel with 6-G and J-0 performance with a partially streamlined sphere hull. The TL–10 design is equipped with the best armor available at this technology level. They are capable of 6-G acceleration and have a 4-Agility rating. They are equipped with fuel scoops for wilderness ocean refueling but have no fuel refineries. They have a model/4 fib ship computer mounted adjacent to the bridge.

  • It carries light armament and a powerful, military defensive suite. The weapons include seven turrets, 8 beam lasers, 4 prismatic sand submunitions launchers and 2 missile silos for offense. Critics complain that the weapon package is substandard and inefficient. Some claim Steiner, McCall & Putnam had surplus dual turrets in inventory from Wolf (world) and was looking for a project to use them. A council of inquiry has lodged a formal complaint with the central adjudicator of the office of the inspector general.
  • It ordinarily carries two 20dton subcraft, no other ship's vehicles, and probes and drones as needed.
  • It has a 24 sophont crew.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Designed and built at Yeeshim (world) with some foreign technical assistance. These ships operate within the Paradise Subsector of the Halcyon Sector. A joint project being developed by a select group of Yeeshim Government Agencies, Marchand et Bernard SA and Steiner, McCall & Putnam their local subcontractor. Limited capacity at the commercial boatyards were freed up for this project. Recent efforts to expand warship inventory in anticipation of older designs coming off the line. Practical supervision and expert project management was provided by certified agents of Reed Howell’s branch offices. The projects originally coded as PVKS-3b was intent on replacing more expensive designs in the deep space and system defense roles. Designed to stay on station for extended periods of time. The spherical hull design is efficient for materials, lowers hull costs and has reduced radiant surface area for its volume. The first prototype and two follow-on models have seen limited-service deployments already. The hull has integral solar panels to lower power plant fuel consumption while on station in high elliptical orbits. They feature thick armor combined with an excellent package of passive sensors. Its' radiated signature is low. Crews enjoy the spacious quarters and crew facilities on the long duration system patrols. They are equipped with an advanced fire control center which allows them to engage multiple targets simultaneously with a high volume of fire to ensure some hits. In practice inflicting damage and penetrating heavily armored hulls seems improbable. The pair of 20 gigs are excellent as interface craft and can serve as life boats if the vessel must be abandoned, but the lack of marine boarding parties make customs inspections and pirate suppressive boarding actions unlikely.

Distant Fringe Vessels[edit]

The Distant Fringe is said to be a far trailing-rimward area inhabited by colonists and refugees originating on Terra. The region is extremely isolated, separated from the rest of Charted Space by vast, almost uncrossable rifts that were once broached by a system of calibration Points and the use of tankers. Those few academics within Charted Space who have found references to the Distant Fringe regard it as little more than a tall tale. Likewise, many of the inhabitants of the Distant Fringe believe the existence of Charted Space to be mythical.[3]

Vessels originating within the Distant Fringe are very rarely encountered outside of the region. However, misjumps do occur and anomalies with bizarre spacetime and Jumpspace effects exist: as such, craft of this type are not entirely unknown within Charted Space.[4]

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities[edit]

Vessel Peculiarities: No information yet available.

Class Naming Practice/s: The YSDP Vernon Powell, the YSDP Gideon Mire and the YSDP Jasmine Gable are the only vessels of this class built and named so far. Each vessel within the class is named by the government of the state that produces it. They generally draw on traditional naming protocols and it is not uncommon for a historical class name to be reused.

  • Individual vessels within the class are issued specific serial numbers and transponder codes.
  • Naming a ship is considered a serious affair and is generally accompanied by a traditional ceremony, usually pouring a local beverage over the bows of the craft. Starfarers tend to be superstitious folk and a ship with a frivolous name is considered "unlucky".
