The Dark Spirit class Intelligence Vessel is a TL–12 Spy Ship.
Description[edit]
The Dark Spirit class served as a spyship of the former Jelmiri Marches, operated by the Jelmiri Marches Navy.
Image Repository[edit]
General Description[edit]
The Dark Spirit class is an intelligence vessel formerly deployed by the Jelmiri Marches - the exact number that were constructed has never been revealed and the number of surviving examples is unknown. The vessel has an unstreamlined buffered planetoid hull and is not fitted for wilderness refueling. The class has enough internal fuel for one Jump-3. Its performance (1-G and J-3) is considered average but its onboard electronics are excellent.
Basic Ship Characteristics[edit]
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (...of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (...thousands of tons) where necessary. Basic Ship Characteristics [2] | ||
---|---|---|
No. | Category | Remarks |
1. | Tonnage / Hull | The Dark Spirit class is constructed using a 900 dTon buffered planetoid hull. The hull is unstreamlined and has no atmospheric capability.
|
2. | Crew | x20 personnel.
Accommodations
Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems.
|
3. | Performance | The vessel mounts a Jump-3 drive, a Maneuver-1 drive, and a fusion Power Plant-3, giving performance of Jump-3 and 1-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 1. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for one Jump-3 and gives the power plant 4 weeks duration.
|
4. | Electronics | Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/6 fib computer. The vessel does not have a backup computer.
The vessel is fitted with advanced communications equipment, a sophisticated sensor array, and has an avionics suite.
|
5. | Hardpoints | x9 hardpoints.
|
6. | Armament | The normal weapons fit-out for the Dark Spirit class is:
x1 dual fusion gun turret, forming its own battery. x2 triple beam laser turrets, grouped into a single battery of 2 linked turrets. x6 triple missile turrets, grouped into a single battery of 6 linked turrets.
|
7. | Defenses | The hull is plated, braced and structurally reinforced. It has an armor rating of 7.
|
8. | Craft | Flight Section:
x1 20-dTon Jembyra class Recovery Boat. The subcraft is housed in a dedicated hangar: the hangar can be sealed and has a total volume of 20 dTons. |
9. | Fuel Treatment | The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 297 dTons.
|
10. | Cost | The basic cost of the vessel is MCr545.163
The price does not include the cost of the launch:
With its subcraft, a discounted Dark Spirit class costs MCr446.470 |
11. | Construction Time | 116 weeks to build, 93 weeks in quantity.
|
12. | Comments | Standard cargo capacity amounts to 11 dTons.

History & Background[edit]
The Dark Spirit class are constructed around an unstreamlined buffered planetoid hull. All the hulls in the class were cut from a single large parent planetoid and have a relatively similar overall shape: fusion-tunneling created the interior spaces and the exteriors were sculpted so that the vessels resembled natural planetoid bodies. Antenna and aerials are retractable and outer doors close over the maneuver drives to complete the camouflage.
The engineering section is equipped with reliable jump 3 Horizon drives, Gomax 1G maneuver drives, and a Plasmadyne F-3 fusion reactor. Standard operational procedure is to power down and avoid detection for as long as possible while monitoring enemy movements and activity. The class fight defensively and rely on their armored hull for protection, seeking to jump out from danger.
The class has excellent passive sensor arrays and deploys sensor drones, able to form a detection grid out to a range of 1 AU.
The vessel carries an impressive array of weapons mounted on nine hardpoints. A dual heavy turret mounts Hellbent fusion cannons, two triple turrets mount Sentinel beam lasers, and six triple turrets carry missile launchers mounting Predator class "barrage cluster" micro missile systems. The missile turrets are tied together and fire as a single battery.
Production of Dark Spirits effectively ceased in 1100, following the Jaibok invasion of the Marches and the destruction of the naval construction yards at Jelmirt. Some vessels were destroyed during the invasion and some are believed to have fled into the interior of Theta Borealis Sector, vowing to continue the fight and liberate their homeland from the Korsumug Empire.
At least one example of the class is known to operate as part of the Percavid regime, though shortages of specialist components to replace worn or broken onboard equipment limits its operational capability.
- Loyalist forces of the Percavid Marches.
Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities[edit]
Vessel Peculiarities:
The vessel operated as a covert ops, surveillance, and sensor platform. They depended on their recovery boat as an interface craft. The vessel was frequently tasked with inserting and removing agents from active duty and was used to keep tabs on the enemy's disposition and intent.
- Intelligence operatives frequently displaced one of the marines assigned to the vessel.
Class Naming Practice/s:
Vessels of the Jelmiri Marches did not use the alphanumeric designations common to other designs of the region, instead using only a "callsign" name.
- Dark Spirit was selected as an easy to remember class name to identify the specific type of vessel.
- Individual vessels were named by a committee using an authorized list.
