Anagathica is a poor, low-population desert world with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

The majority of worlds in the Imperium and beyond, officially at least, do not yet know of the existence of the Solomani Preserve – the Preserve has gone to great lengths to keep its presence concealed. According to the most up-to-date Imperial AAB Library Data, drawn from long-range surveys dated to around 1100, this is a barren, non-aligned, unclaimed world lying in an uninhabited wilderness region on the very edge of Charted Space. On most official Imperial records its UWP is listed as:

Thaku Fung 2413 X140000-0 Ba De Po Sa 003 NaXX M6 V D

Note that the Solomani Preserve established formal relations with the Imperium in 1105, via the Imperial Scout Base at Geokha. This included an exchange of data, including each Preserve member system's updated Universal World Profile. It is likely to be years or decades before this new information is collated and fully disseminates across Charted Space: until then, many AAB databases will continue to include the outdated pre-1105 survey data.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Anagathica is a moon of a gas giant.

Gas Giant Moons 09d.jpg

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Anagathica is a Small World between 900km and 2,400km in diameter. The world has very low gravity between 0.05G and 0.09G. The horizon will appear about 2km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Anagathica has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Anagathica has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

  • Locally, detailed maps may be available.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Primitive native life occupying a number of specialist ecological niches. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

  • Native lifeforms survive in extremely marginal conditions.

Hardy grasses hoard what little water is available on the planet's surface, and their respiratory processes have given it an atmosphere that is (somewhat) breathable by humans. Small insects, the largest of which are roughly analogous to Terran bees, pollinate and feed off of these plants: these flora and fauna represent the highest native lifeforms known to exist on the world.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Anagathica is property of the Solomani Preserve. In a sense, it is a colony of the Preserve's capital, Havensmith, as that is the primary beneficiary of Anagathica's main export.

Sandy terrain is to be found on over 90% of the planet's surface. At various points, geological processes produce the natural anagathics that are the planet's main industry. All known deposits have at least a guarded mining outpost, though some are more well developed than others. Mined out deposits are typically sealed with an automated mining beacon, that checks every year or so to see if the deposit has restored enough that mining can be worthwhile.

Quirks in the planet's geology make it one massive factory for anagathic precursors. Extensive study has shown that it might become economical to synthesize anagathics with much better technology, but also much higher demand: at least trillions, possibly quadrillions, of doses per year. This ideological argument was used to encourage the Solomani Preserve's Hatching: to set up many colonies that could someday individually grow to tens or hundreds of billions of people, and thus collectively generate the requisite demand.

It is a Danger World and is designated as an Amber Zone. It presents particular risks and dangers due to the environment or native life forms, laws or customs, or other conditions that are not well understood.

  • Visitors are advised to act with caution.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Anagathica has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

Visitors are restricted to the highport, the (as of 1105) nearly twenty five hundred year old space station Eternia II (complete with museum that, the locals say, is mostly there to answer, "What happened to Eternia I?"). Any ship attempting to make an unauthorized landing (starships are almost never given authorization, limiting traffic to spaceships that will not be leaving the system) is shot down, with even the pieces "kinetically encouraged" (to quote the local militia's visitors' brochure) to land away from the anagathics deposits. All starships are informed of this from traffic control as part of arrival.

  • Each mining facility has landing pads for spaceships to drop off and receive people and equipment, and pick up anagathic precursors for delivery to refineries at the highport. These could be considered class H downports if they did not have weapons intended to blow up unauthorized visitors, designed to fire on the landing pad if necessary.

World Population (P)[edit]

Anagathica has a population of 8,000 sophonts (thousands).

  • This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.
  • The population almost entirely consists of humans of Solomani descent.

Urbanization[edit]

Most of the population live in orbiting space stations that are part cargo facility, part refinery. Individual mines play out over the course of decades, so rather than move refineries from site to site, it is traditional to bring the raw product to orbit. Further, Anagathica's low gravity is not preferable for long-term living, and the Solomani Preserve prefers to adapt its worlds to its people than vice versa.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The most commonly heard languages are:

  • Anglic: it is the dominant language on the planet. Anyone who wishes to immigrate must demonstrate proficiency, though most trade offices have someone who speaks Gvegh to interface with the occasional trader from the Vargr Extents.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Anagathica possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)[edit]

Anagathica has a Captive Government or Colony. The world is ruled by an external government, there is no self-rule. This is a colony or conquered area. The local government is an oligarchy appointed by, and answerable only to, the external government.

World Military[edit]

This is one of the few worlds in the Solomani Preserve that can be said to host a true military presence - all defensive, to discourage thieves and especially saboteurs. Any major deposit of anagathics hosts its own anti-air laser battery. Triple layers of sensor satellites - at geostationary, medium, and low orbits - completely blanket the planet, complemented by a blockade of 1,000 ton missile and beam boats. No mining expedition goes without an armed marine escort.

That said, it has long been recognized that no serious raid will soon be coming. Most of the naval forces are manned by cadets on their first term of service from the academy, or senior officers expected to soon retire. (Ironically, thanks to this planet's anagathics, there have been cases where the latter was in their 40s while the former was at least in their 60s.) The marines are mostly inspectors, there to assist the miners and confirm they are not smuggling any unaccounted-for anagathic precursors (accidentally or not) more than expecting saboteurs. Most weapons that are not used in mining are only fired as part of test procedures during annual maintenance. Some governors have made this into an unofficial annual holiday, with the larger weapons providing the equivalent of fireworks.

World Law (L)[edit]

The administrator of Anagathica is charged with keeping the anagathics flowing, enough to support the Preserve. Millions if not billions of people could die if the supply is interrupted. On the spot executions are allowed in support of this, though there is a policy of warning first.

Only the fact that unauthorized visitors are tolerated kept the Travellers' Aid Society, upon receiving sector data in 1103, from issuing Anagathica a Red Zone advisory, though it easily earned an Amber Zone. Anyone who jumps in without business in the system is typically advised not to engage maneuver or reaction drive, and met by a fuel barge to send them on their way as soon as possible.

That said, any such ship that ignores the warning usually soon becomes an expanding sphere of debris. The Travellers' Aid Society's Amber Zone advisory specifically warns would-be visitors to heed the warning - or better yet, to avoid the system entirely for those who have no business there. Anyone heading from Havensmith into the Preserve who has at least Jump-3 (which includes anyone who reached Havensmith via the Cheaters' Route) is advised to head directly to VoidBridge 2 (or VoidBridge 3 or beyond, with better jump drives) instead of stopping at Anagathica.

Starting in 503, proof of destination has been required for purchase of anagathics, out of fears that the Tijian Khaganate and potentially other polities to spinward have reverse-engineered them. Export to the Vargr Extents is still allowed, as is export to any location within the Preserve. Ironically (and as a diplomatic point), export to Geokha was specifically allowed once trade with that world was opened up.

Trade Data[edit]

Over 99.9% of all anagathics shipped from Anagathica have a buyer and designated shipping vessel before they even reach the highport. Of the rest, most have a buyer and are available as freight in very secure containers. The remainder - around a hundred tons annually even before the Empress Wave's destruction collapsed demand, exactly twelve tons in 1105 (as a result of the administrator's successful attempt to prop up prices and maintain supply) - are generally auctioned off by the planet's administrator (for instance, one ton on the first weekend of each month in 1105) to speculators. These auctions are society events, well attended by those in power even if they place no bids.

Exports of other pharmaceuticals, ores, and raw materials are readily available.

World Economy[edit]

Anagathica's economy is based around mining, processing, and exporting enough anagathics for the entire Preserve. All other industries exist to support that, directly or indirectly. Miners with families leave their children and spouses on the highport, commuting back either nightly or on the weekends.

While various guilds and corporations have tried to assert dominance over the mining, the Solomani Preserve asserts its ownership over the world, maintaining their price and supply controls while sanctioning (with military force if necessary) anyone else who tries to interfere with production and sale. Prices are controlled to finance the mining operations while making the end product as broadly available - within the Preserve, anyway - as possible. (Exports of anagathics to colonies spinward of the Preserve, in certain years from 1 until the Empress Wave arrived, accounted for as much as 10% of the Preserve's budget.)

With all the mining and processing equipment around, belt mining (actually, mining the trojans of the gas giant the mainworld orbits) is a significant secondary industry. Pharmaceutical manufacture is another secondary industry, spawned from thousands of years of medical research around anagathics (improving efficacy, fixing or working around allergies, and so on).

World Culture[edit]

World Timeline[edit]

Major events that have affected this world and the wider region that it lies within:

Later Historical Eras[edit]

In general, "Later Historical Eras" refers to events that occur post-1116 – a date that marks the beginning of the Rebellion, which ultimately led to the collapse of the Third Imperium. The year 1116 is seen as a historical dividing line, as it were, between the old and the new.

The Imperial Rebellion and its consequences were largely meaningless on the far coreward edge of Charted Space – for worlds in Thaku Fung Sector the key historical event that marked the divide between the old and the new was the Empress Wave. In this context, "Later Historical Eras" generally refers to the events in the years, decades, and centuries following the passage of the Wave.

  • The Wave entered the coreward edge of the sector around the year 1040, passing through its territory at a rate of roughly 1 parsec per year, and exited the rimward edge of the sector around the year 1080. Its effects varied from world to world, but were never good: it left insanity, societal collapse, and death in its wake.
