Carcosa is a poor, moderate population pre-industrial hellworld, with over a hundred million but not yet a billion sophonts struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often develop intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
- This world would like to become a major industrial powerhouse in the subsector, but lacks the population and resources to build an adequate workforce and industrial business sector.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Carcosa Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- It is a chilly tundra world, with a climate of low temperatures.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Carcosa is a binary star system.
- The primary is a white main sequence.
- The secondary is a yellow main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x9 secondary rocky worlds.
- x2 planetoid belts.
- x2 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Carcosa orbits towards the outer edge of the primary star's habitable zone.
- It receives relatively low levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Carcosa is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Carcosa has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- The atmosphere is tainted with radon gas.
- It experiences relatively low temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Carcosa has 15-25% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. There may be a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.
- The world's small seas are crusted with pack ice.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
Carcosa has large polar ice caps, which represent the bulk of the planetary water. While the planet is geologically active, the surface is a mixture of high, isolated mountain ranges and craters.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
World Starport (St)[edit]
Carcosa has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
Carcosa negotiated with the Solomani Confederation for 2 separate downports, Cardown and Cosadown.
- They support traffic in the Northern and Southern icepack regions, respectively.
World Population (P)[edit]
Carcosa has a population of 600,000,000 sophonts (hundreds of millions).
- The population almost entirely consists of Solomani humans.
Urbanization[edit]
Cities are constructed at TL–7-TL–8 with designs adapted to water and power conservation.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Euxene French, a Terran language principally spoken in the Euxene Cluster.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
- Carcosa-north, a local dialect of Rim Anglic spoken in the world's northern polar regions.
- Carcosa-south, a local dialect of Rim Anglic spoken in the world's southern polar regions.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Carcosa possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
- Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
- Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
- Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Carcosa has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
The world has five sovereign nations:
- Aboot (southern polar region)
- Carci (northern polar region)
- Junst (southern polar region)
- Kusine (northern polar region)
- Tarbon (northern polar region)
These nations vary in their government styles, social styles, and cuisine, but are generally more alike than different. They are all very competitive, and have strong national sports teams that express that.
World Military[edit]
Each nation maintains ground forces including rocket-assisted jet airforces
World Law (L)[edit]
Carcosa has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: -1 (unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
Carcosa has a fully-developed world economy. While restricted in water resources, it nonetheless has built a civilization that is advancing steadily. After contact and the provision on a standard C-Class downport, progress has rapidly increased. Carcosa has already met the requirements for Tech-9 in many areas, and there is a global cooperative effort to create a starflight-enabled economy.
