System Data

Grille is a binary star system with two nearly identical small red stars, which orbit around a common center of gravity at a mean separation of 100 AU. The slightly larger of the two is designated the primary and has a family of ten very small rocky and icy planets orbiting it. These have few exploitable resources. The very slightly smaller secondary star's planetary system consists of a single gas giant, orbiting in the outer part of its habitable zone.

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data

Grille is the largest moon of the system's solitary gas giant, Vengeance.

The mainworld and its gas giant primary orbit within the secondary star's Habitable Zone.

  • They lie within the zones colder outer H- region.
  • They receive lower levels of stellar energy.

Mainworld Size (S)

Grille is a Meso World between 5,600km and 7,200km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.32G and 0.46G. The horizon will appear about 3.6km away.

The initial survey of Grille indicated its density was higher than would be expected for an object of its size. This led to the assumption that it contained a significant amount of heavy elements.

  • Prospectors have located deposits of gold, platinum, palladium and cobalt. None of the deposits has been particularly large.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Grille has a pressure of less than 0.1 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Grille has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Grille is a rocky and barren world with a trace atmosphere containing nitrogen and a small amount of oxygen. Residents of the community on Grille generate breathable air by drawing in and concentrating this atmosphere. There is no open water on Grille and only minimal amounts of water ice on its surface.

It and its gas giant primary world orbit towards the outer edge of the star's habitable zone. Temperatures range from very low (-40°C) to frigid (-140°C). Despite this, the lack of appreciable atmosphere will cause objects in direct starlight to become super-heated. The world is within Vengeance's magnetic field, partially shielding it from harmful stellar radiation.

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

Native Lifeforms

Grille has no native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Grille has been a mining colony since some time in the 800s.

Grille was first visited at an unknown time during the Long Night. Remnants of a prospecting outpost and a navigation beacon were discovered by an IISS survey ship in the mid-400s, but the world was uninhabited. It is not known exactly when the world was resettled, but visitors likely came gradually between the 800s and 1000s. As different groups came to prospect for minerals, some remained on a more permanent basis.

World Starport (St)

Grille has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

Grille Downport is a small leveled pad. At various times in the past it has offered refined fuel for sale but there is currently no ongoing operation to fill its reserve tanks. A restaurant is available and minimal supplies available at TL-7 may be purchased at an adjacent store.

World Population (P)

Grille has a population of 7,000 sophonts (thousands).

  • This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.

Grille's population is entirely made up of Imperial humans of mixed Vilani / Solomani descent. As of 1103 there were 7037 permanent residents.

  • Most of the population is non-native, having moved to the world from Maitz, Fornice, or Mora.

Approximately 70% of the population is made up of transient prospectors and miners who move to exploit mineral deposits as they are located. The rest of the population exists to service this only industry.

Urbanization

The entire population of Grille resides in a single permanent community near the downport resembling a town of connected pressure-tight buildings. The buildings are designed so that there are multiple connections and backups, so that a single leak will not isolate sections or expose the entire town to vacuum.

Linguistic Topography

The following languages are most commonly heard:

World Technology Level (T)

Grille possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

Grille's tech level of 7 represents the current manufacturing level. Residents of the world generally possess sufficient equipment to survive, nearly everyone owns at least one vacc suit for instance. Prospectors and miners typically come from offworld with equipment suited for operations in the near-vacuum.

World Government (G)

Grille is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions within the government. These positions are inherited by members of the group or by their relatives. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.

While the non-existent Baronet Westland is the titular leader, a group of long-term residents and business owners form a council that makes important decisions and levies taxes in the Baronet's name.

World Military

There is no Imperial or local military force on Grille. The world used to have a Scout/Courier which was intended as an emergency measure to call for help in the event of invasion, but the ship was either lost or stolen in 1093 and has not been returned.

World Law (L)

Grille has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

The small community of Grille has a police department consisting of a constable and six deputies. These law enforcers are armed and authorized to conduct arrests anywhere on the moon. In practice they rarely leave the settlement. Because everyone lives in connected pressurized dwellings, the possession of firearms capable of penetrating such dwellings is prohibited when at the settlement. Gear carried outside of the settlement is not monitored or restricted.

Imperial Landed Nobility

Grille, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world.

Grille is nominally governed as a fiefdom of the Baronet of Westland. However that title is not currently in use by any member of the Imperial aristocracy. The last titleholder died without issue in 1032 and the title returned to the Imperial Crown. As yet it has not been granted to anyone else.

Trade Data

  • Importance: -3 (very unimportant)

Grille is not on a major trade route (apart from being a member of the Spinward Main), but is often visited by ships refueling between Maitz and Fornice. There have been occasional reports of piracy in the system.

World Economy

  • Resources: 5 (scarce)
  • Labor: 2 (hundreds)
  • Infrastructure: 0 (non-existent)
  • Efficiency: -5 (extremely poor)

Grille's economy is based entirely on servicing miners who come to the world to exploit its mineral resources. Occasionally vessels will stop for some other reason, typically to trade with the locals, but most ships use the gas giant as a refueling stop and do not call at the mainworld.

While Grille has had some successful mining concerns, it is not known for making people rich. The significant surface deposits that were once found here have mostly been depleted and deeper mining operations have been started in several places. These have a higher cost, due to the lack of atmosphere and local resources, so profits have suffered. No major corporations still operate mines: the remainder are small private firms hoping to find something the big companies missed.

World Culture

  • Heterogenity: 1 (monolithic)
  • Acceptance: 1 (extremely xenophobic)
  • Strangeness: 3 (somewhat typical)
  • Symbols: 5 (concrete)

Grille's native population is too small to support a unique culture. Cultural norms from Fornice are most common.
