Nanthou Subsector is Subsector E of Windhorn Sector.

Description / Specifications[edit]

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

Nanthou Subsector is a region that has seen millennia of settlement by Vargr.

  • The resources of the subsector are being exploited.

Astrographic Features & Trade Routes[edit]

The following astrographic and commercial data has been determined regarding Nanthou Subsector:

  • The subsector is an average stellar density region.
  • The brightest star is the unstable red giant primary of the Gaedueng system. It is sometimes called the Eye of the Rift.
  • The subsector lies on the edge of the Windhorn Rift.

Stellar Distribution[edit]

A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Nanthou Subsector, right:

  • The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
  • The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.

Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.

  • Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
  • Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the subsector and far beyond.

Rift Regions[edit]

(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)

The Windhorn Rift dominates the central and rimward parts of the subsector.

  • The rift hinders travel and commerce within the region.
  • It has placed a boundary on settlement and expansion within the area.

Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based on Jump Drive performance.

The boundaries of rifts were established centuries ago, when the highest commonly encountered tech level was TL–12.

This traditional definition of rift regions remains in use today: while modern high performance starships can easily cross them, most commercial vessels continue to utilize Jump-3 or less drives. Because of this most traffic is concentrated within higher stellar density regions, and as such the classic definition and boundaries of rift regions remains relevant.

World Listing[edit]

AAB library archives contain expanded data about the following systems:

Note that some Second Survey data, though only 40 years old, is likely to be out of date.

  • Data is occasionally updated as new information becomes available.
  • Scouting missions gathering reliable, verified data can receive substantial payment.
  • Verified updated data is constantly sought.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Nanthou Subsector has been settled and controlled by the Vargr for millennia. Due to its proximity to Lair, the Vargr homeworld, exploration and settlement within the region began soon after the Vargr discovered jump technology. Despite this, the area has remained a backwater.

The subsector is under the dominion of the Empire of Varroerth, the largest and oldest polity within the Vargr Extents.

  • It has been controlled by the Empire for centuries.

Polity Listing[edit]

Subsector Summary[edit]

Nanthou, subsector E of Windhorn, contains ten worlds with an estimated combined population of 50 billion, a per capita income of Cr4,096, and a total economy of BCr205,112. These worlds originate an interstellar trade of BCr9 through 9 starports (1 Class A, 4 Class B, 4 Class C, 0 Class D) employing 1,200 people. Driving this interstellar trade are two Agricultural (Ag) worlds, two Non-Agricultural (Na) worlds, no Pre-Agricultural (Pa) worlds, one Pre-Industrial (Pi) world, no Rich (Ri) worlds, and one Industrial (In) world. The governments in Nanthou maintain two Naval bases and one Corsair base. The average technology level is 8 (with most between 5 and 10). The highest technology level is 13 at Gaedueng (Windhorn 0414).

Nanthou, subsector E of Windhorn, contains 14 stars and 112 identified planets; seven monostellar systems, two binary systems, one trinary system, and no systems with four or more stars. 8 of the ten systems (80%) have native gas giants. There are no Asteroid (As) belts, one Desert (De) world, no Garden (Ga) worlds, one Ice-capped (Ic) world, two Poor (Po) worlds, three Vacuum (Va) worlds, and no Water (Wa) or Ocean (Oc) worlds.

Nanthou has an estimated population of 50 billion distributed across one High population (Hi) world, no Moderate population (Ph) worlds, four Non-industrial (Ni) worlds, three Low population (Lo) worlds, and no Barren (Ba) worlds. The highest population world is Dharukeksoue (Windhorn 0211). The population consists primarily of 1 sophont group.

Empire of Varroerth[edit]

The Empire of Varroerth has jurisdiction over nine worlds in the subsector with an estimated combined population of 50 billion, a per capita income of Cr4,096, and a total economy of BCr205,098. These worlds originate an interstellar trade of BCr9 through 8 starports (0 Class A, 4 Class B, 4 Class C, 0 Class D) employing 1,150 people. The governments in the Empire of Varroerth maintain two Naval bases and one Corsair base within the subsector. The average technology level is 7 (with most between 5 and 10). The highest technology level is 13 at Gaedueng (Windhorn 0414).

The Empire of Varroerth has an estimated population of 50 billion within the subsector, distributed across one High population (Hi) world, no Moderate population (Ph) worlds, three Non-industrial (Ni) worlds, three Low population (Lo) worlds, and no Barren (Ba) worlds. The highest population world is Dharukeksoue (Windhorn 0211). The population consists primarily of 1 sophont group.

Non-Aligned, Vargr-dominated[edit]

There is one Non-Aligned Vargr-dominated world in Nanthou with an estimated population of 3 million.
