Nanthou Subsector is Subsector E of Windhorn Sector.
- It lies within Charted Space.
- It is part of the Vargr Extents.
Description / Specifications
Nanthou Subsector is a region that has seen millennia of settlement by Vargr.
- The resources of the subsector are being exploited.
Astrographic Features & Trade Routes
The following astrographic and commercial data has been determined regarding Nanthou Subsector:
- The subsector is an average stellar density region.
- The brightest star is the unstable red giant primary of the Gaedueng system. It is sometimes called the Eye of the Rift.
- The subsector lies on the edge of the Windhorn Rift.
Stellar Distribution
A basic map showing the distribution and size of stars within Nanthou Subsector, right:
- The color corresponds to the visible color of the star, which links to its spectral classification.
- The size as shown indicates both the physical size of the object and its relative brightness.
Note that the stars as depicted are representative. Any star, no matter what its size, is a mere speck within the hex it occupies.
- Ordinary main sequence stars can barely be seen from even a hex away.
- Huge, intensely luminous giant stars can be seen from across the subsector and far beyond.
Rift Regions
The Windhorn Rift dominates the central and rimward parts of the subsector.
- The rift hinders travel and commerce within the region.
- It has placed a boundary on settlement and expansion within the area.
A simple map showing rift regions within Nanthou Subsector, right:
Locally at least, a rift is an astrographic concept based on Jump Drive performance.
The boundaries of rifts were established centuries ago, when the highest commonly encountered tech level was TL–12.
- This level of technology allowed the routine use of up to Jump-3 drives.
- Areas that couldn't be crossed by Jump-3-capable vessels were denoted as rifts.
This traditional definition of rift regions remains in use today: while modern high performance starships can easily cross them, most commercial vessels continue to utilize Jump-3 or less drives. Because of this most traffic is concentrated within higher stellar density regions, and as such the classic definition and boundaries of rift regions remains relevant.

- The primary source material for all data is Traveller Map.
- Other sources may contain contradictory or incorrect information.
Note that some Second Survey data, though only 40 years old, is likely to be out of date.
- Data is occasionally updated as new information becomes available.
- Scouting missions gathering reliable, verified data can receive substantial payment.
- Verified updated data is constantly sought.
History & Background (Dossier)
Nanthou Subsector has been settled and controlled by the Vargr for millennia. Due to its proximity to Lair, the Vargr homeworld, exploration and settlement within the region began soon after the Vargr discovered jump technology. Despite this, the area has remained a backwater.
The subsector is under the dominion of the Empire of Varroerth, the largest and oldest polity within the Vargr Extents.
- It has been controlled by the Empire for centuries.
Polity Listing
The following polities lie within the subsector:
Capitals
- Dharukeksoue has been declared the subsector capital by the Empire of Varroerth.
Native Sophonts (NILs)
No races (sophont species) are believed to have originated in this area.
Demographics
Significant populations of the following races (sophont species) reside within this area:
- Terragens (Non-human Terran races)
- Vargr (Major Race): The majority population within the sector.
- Humaniti (Human Races)
- Mixed heritage (Major Race): Sparsely distributed across the sector.
- Solomani (Major Race): Sparsely distributed across the sector.
- Vilani (Major Race): Mainly found within those parts of the sector that were formerly part of the Ziru Sirka.
- Non-Human Races
- Aezorgh of Soghzalghag: Native to the sector and sparsely distributed across the rimward parts of the Vargr Extents. Their name translates as vermin.
- Dhaen of Dhaen, in Provence Sector: Small, long-bodied, fur-covered humanoids not recognized by the Vargr as being sophont.
- Some Vargr keep them as pets or as servants.
- Hlanssai of Vrirhlanz, in Gzaekfueg Sector: Sensual, impulsive, emotional humanoids with a strong wanderlust who may occasionally be encountered in small groups.
- They are considered "unstable" by the notoriously unpredictable Vargr.
Subsector Timeline
Major events that have affected this subsector and the wider region that it lies within:
- -3810: The Vargr discover jump technology and begin an era of expansion.
- -3700s onwards: Waves of Vargr settle worlds across the region.
- -2404 to -2215: The Human Interstellar Wars rage to rimward.
- circa -1700: Vargr expansion and settlement gradually ceases.
- -1776 to 0: The Long Night. There is widespread regression within the area and some worlds become barren.
- The Year 0: To rimward, the Third Imperium is founded.
- circa 26: The Empire of Varroerth is founded.
- 300-420: The Imperial First Survey charts the subsector.
- 995-1065: The Imperial Second Survey charts the subsector.
- 1065: The Second Survey is published. Information about the subsector becomes widely available.
Subsector Summary
Nanthou, subsector E of Windhorn, contains ten worlds with an estimated combined population of 50 billion, a per capita income of Cr4,096, and a total economy of BCr205,112. These worlds originate an interstellar trade of BCr9 through 9 starports (1 Class A, 4 Class B, 4 Class C, 0 Class D) employing 1,200 people. Driving this interstellar trade are two Agricultural (Ag) worlds, two Non-Agricultural (Na) worlds, no Pre-Agricultural (Pa) worlds, one Pre-Industrial (Pi) world, no Rich (Ri) worlds, and one Industrial (In) world. The governments in Nanthou maintain two Naval bases and one Corsair base. The average technology level is 8 (with most between 5 and 10). The highest technology level is 13 at Gaedueng (Windhorn 0414).
Nanthou, subsector E of Windhorn, contains 14 stars and 112 identified planets; seven monostellar systems, two binary systems, one trinary system, and no systems with four or more stars. 8 of the ten systems (80%) have native gas giants. There are no Asteroid (As) belts, one Desert (De) world, no Garden (Ga) worlds, one Ice-capped (Ic) world, two Poor (Po) worlds, three Vacuum (Va) worlds, and no Water (Wa) or Ocean (Oc) worlds.
Nanthou has an estimated population of 50 billion distributed across one High population (Hi) world, no Moderate population (Ph) worlds, four Non-industrial (Ni) worlds, three Low population (Lo) worlds, and no Barren (Ba) worlds. The highest population world is Dharukeksoue (Windhorn 0211). The population consists primarily of 1 sophont group.
