Description (Specifications)[edit]

Orbital complexes range in size from single stations up to large, sprawling cities. Complexes can be joined in a daisy-chain arrangement, or simply a group of closely proximate individual complexes in the same orbit. Three general size categories exist: orbital stations, orbital settlements, and orbital cities.

Space stations go by an incredible variety of names and serve an equally diverse set of missions from highports to orbital factories to shipyards and more. When technology advances adequately, they can be a viable residential option especially around small worlds.

Strategy & Tactics (Doctrine)[edit]

Space Stations are an important part of TL:10-15 technological life, linking to beanstalks, decreasing mass fuel needs of system craft, allowing better mainworld access to FTL merchant vessels, and, in general, making intra-planetary and inter-stellar life possible.

  • While space stations can be weaponized as battle stations, most are cost-efficient civilian structures and are vulnerable to raider vessels unless protected by COACC forces or other defensive craft.

System Craft typically serve the following roles:

  1. Barge (WB) (Namesake)
  2. Battle Barge
  3. Cargo Barge
  4. Heavy Barge
  5. Light Barge
  6. Medium Barge
  7. Passenger Barge

  2. Automated Interdiction Satellite (WAI)
  3. Battle Satellite (WAD)
  4. Beacon (WAB)
  5. Defensive Satellite (WAD)

Civilian Subcraft[edit]

Civilian subcraft (...both smallcraft and bigcraft) are carried by some of these vessels:

  1. Barge (WB)
  2. Utility Craft (U)

Supraclass Archetypal Roles[edit]

These vessels typically serve the following archetypal roles:

W-class Space Station Supraclass Archetypes
Archetype Type Code Exemplar Remarks
Space Station WO (Namesake) Eshpadir class Orbital Installation None
  • W = World Station
  • O = Orbital
Orbital City WOC No exemplar yet available. The largest of the orbital complexes, an Orbital City is a closed-cycle orbital station with a permanent population in the thousands. Possible at TL–9.
  • O = Orbital
  • C = City
Downport WOD No exemplar yet available. Ground installation, sometimes jokingly referred to as "surface orbit" or "underground orbit". Used for planetary installations designed to interact with starships, spaceships, and/or smallcraft, such as a downport or a weapons installation, made in high enough quantities to count as a "class" of objects akin to a ship class. This last requirement usually means they are prefabricated, rather than constructed primarily on site. Technically possible at TL–0, unlikely before TL–8 unless there is significant regular traffic from offworld.
  • O = Orbital
  • D = Downport
Orbital Settlement WOE No exemplar yet available. An Orbital Settlement is an open-cycle orbital station with a permanent population in the hundreds. Possible at TL–8.
  • O = Orbital
  • E = SEttlement
Prison Hulk WOP No exemplar yet available. The only ways off a prison in orbit are to board a visiting ship, or to drift in orbit (usually involving a means of de-orbiting). The former can be easily secured in most cases and it is difficult to survive the latter, making this an attractive option for those seeking secure prison complexes. Possible at TL–9 given the uncooperative, or at least untrained, majority of the population (which requirement favors low-maintenance designs, thus the designation "Hulk").
  • O = Orbital
  • P = Prison
Orbital Station WOS Eshpadir class Orbital Installation An Orbital Station is a single large satellite used as an orbital installation, with a permanent population in the tens. Often built as a modular unit, able to be expanded upon as necessary. Some standard station types include refueling station, communications station, research station, fighter base, peace monitor, civilian transfer station (for personnel and/or cargo), or drydock control centre. Possible at TL–7.
NOTES: There is semantic overlap between many of the classes and codes. Some codes organize by mission or capability, others by size and tonnage, and yet others by other characteristics.
  • O = Orbital
  • S = Station
