Fighting Ships of the Shattered Imperium is a Game Designers Workshop product.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Imperial Navy never planned for the worst of all possible contingencies: a far-flung Rebellion that would shatter the empire into squabbling factions, each with its own portion of the Navy’s fighting strength. Now, Imperial ship fights Imperial ship as the Rebellion drives the entire Imperium into chaos.

Fighting Ships is a compendium of immense battleships and cruisers that served with the Imperial fleet and now serve with the fleets of the many factions of the Rebellion. Included in this book are standard statistical descriptions of 58 ships, with illustrations for 16 of the most interesting.

Meta-history & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Fighting Ships of the Shattered Imperium is a compendium of 58 starships, initially designed for the Imperial Navy, now in use by the many factions of the Rebellion.

  1. It was apparently a product rushed to printing because it is full of typos and missing illustrations.
  2. It states 58 designs, but appears to actually mention 63. Not well executed.
  3. The art is beautiful, bit no accompanying flavor text is associated with individual ship entries or the illustrations that about a quarter of them have.
  4. Many of the ships appear to have Type S scout vessels docked to their noses, but there is no explanation of why these images occur.
  5. Several images are previewed at the beginning of a chapter and then don't appear elsewhere.
  6. Most of the designs feature insignia or symbols from the various rebellion factions and no accompanying flavor text why that faction may use the design.
  7. The Missile Tankers aren't explained at all, and appear to be regular tankers that replaced their normal loads with massed missile bays. No explanation.
  8. There is no explanation of the difference between an escort and a destroyer.
  9. One fighter appears and no others. Strange.
  10. The Dromedary mixed replenishment ship / tanker ship is barely explained.
  11. The tech charts are fascinating, but only get a paragraph or two each that barely explain what they mean. The text charts often include designs without stats and exclude designs with stats.
  12. All in all, it's a very neat, but frustratingly ill conceived and executed Traveller gaming book.
