The Riter class System Defense Boat is a TL–9 Military Vessel.

Description[edit]

The Riter-class System Defense Boat is a Military vessel. It is dependent on fleet tenders to transport them for offensive operations beyond their home system. Karna class Fleet Tenders can move them if available. They are typically encountered operating within the Riter Subsector of stars within the Iphigenaia Sector. It is classified as a military vessel.

General Description & Deck Plans[edit]

The Riter class is an airframe Needle Hull, it is fully streamlined and can operator in an aerospace environment without difficulty. The hull features lifting surfaces.

Basic Ship Characteristics[edit]

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) where necessary. [1]

Basic Ship Characteristics [2]
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage / Hull The Riter class is constructed using a 500 Ton hull built in a Needle Hull configuration. The hull is an airframe shape, giving good atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by airfoil surfaces and the vessels onboard gravitic systems.
  • Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls.
  • The craft has an airlock located forward, adjacent to the bridge. The cargo hold is accessed by large lateral hatches and a bow door and ramp.
  • The vessel has a sturdy retractable wheeled undercarriage, allowing surface landings.
2. Crew Total Crew Complement: 20
  • x1 Command Pilot, x6 Engineering, x4 Gunnery, 1xMedic/Science Officer, 1 Flight Crew, typically a marine billet

and 6 Fleet Marines who serve as damage control and as a boarding party aboard the ship's launch. There are 10 staterooms with double occupancy.

Accommodations
There are x10 Staterooms which are given over to crew quarters.

Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems.

  • There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency.
  • There are three Emergency Lockers.
3. Performance / Engineering The vessel mounts a Maneuver-6 drive and a Power Plant-8, giving performance of 6-G acceleration and producing 40 Energy Points. The ship has an agility rating of 6. The dedicated internal fuel tankage gives the power plant 4 weeks duration.
  • The engineering section has a control room.
4. Main Section / Electronics Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/3 fib Computer: the ship does not have a backup computer.
5. Hardpoints x5 hardpoints.
  • The battery arrangement is considered standard for the class. Alternative weaponry may be designated for specific routes.
6. Armament / Weaponry The normal fit-out for a Riter class is five triple turrets:

x2 Triple Beam Laser Turrets for anti-missile point defense and x6 Missile Racks, mounted as a single factor 3 torpedo battery, each rack mounts x3 standard Anti-Shipping Missiles.

7. Defenses The hull has factor 7 Heavy Armor and mounts a triple sand caster turret.

x3 Sandcaster racks are mounted as part of the weapons array.

The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.

8. Craft / Subcraft Vehicles

x1 20-dTon Launch.

The hangar is a dedicated vehicle garage and forms part of the cargo hold. It is divided off by partition walls and also serves as a machine shop. The hanger has a total volume of 280 cubic meters.

9. Fuel Treatment The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 40 dTons.
10. Cost The basic cost of the vessel, is MCr668.75 for the prototype.
  • If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price per unit to MCr535.
  • The vessel and its Launch are standard designs. Detailed architectural plans are subject to a 6.688MCr. design fee is chargeable.
11. Construction Time 80 weeks (20 months) as standard.
  • Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12. Remarks Standard cargo capacity amounts to 4 dTons.
  • Sections of the hold may be isolated if desired and can be provided with specialized environmental conditions, typically refrigeration.

History & Background[edit]

The original hulls were modified and the heaviest layers of hull armor were stripped off to make room for more internal features. The oversized fusion power plant struggles to operate within stealth energy output parameters and the design suffers degraded emissions security when operating at maximum capacity for prolonged times, especially when under agility 6 escape maneuvers. The missile batteries were collapsed into a single fire control center to reduce crew requirements and free up room for another marine. The lasers turrets enjoy independent target acquisition systems to deal with multiple threats at the same time. Once the armor rating was degraded the sand caster turret was installed to assist with point defense. An earlier version had an Air/Raft for marine operations away from the ship. The much larger launch was latter added to improve boarding actions and customs inspections to avoid the need of EVA zero G operations.

A government contract at the request of a grateful Regency of Muirimi government naval procurement office. Local shipyard space was set aside for the first hull number of the class. Field trials and shakedown cruises were completed within the parameters of general satisfaction of the regency admiralty. To date fifteen additions hulls have been completed and are deployed in four patrol squadrons of four boats each. They can deploy the equivalent of an understrength marine platoon. They are tasked with anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and internal security patrols. They have been called upon to perform search and rescue operations for commercial traffic. Each detachment operates from secret fortresses well camouflaged and hidden. Only the inner circle of fleet command knows the locations of all the bases. Personnel are not permitted to transfer between bases. Each group is dedicated and patriotic, at least thus far. Even logistic support and resupply units are segregated to prevent security leaks. Rumors persist of psionically suppressed memory blocks to ensure security. Crews tend to serve a max of eight years before being stood down and replaced with all new crews. Plans to upgrade or expand the class have been discussed. Crews want more hulls deployed to bolster the thin picket line.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities[edit]

Officially these boats are given hull numbers only. Crews have personal nicknames for their boats which have found their way onto unofficial nose art and hull paint. Some honor sweethearts, home towns or aggressive slogans to boost morale.
