Herapath is a low-population world with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts in size.

  • This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
  • This is a hot world, with a climate of high temperatures.
  • This world is also known as Lapanne.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Stellar Data[edit]

Herapath has a solitary primary star.

  • It is an orange main sequence.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Herapath is tidally locked to its primary star.

  • The star is always high in the sky on the bright face, it hangs on horizon in the twilight zone, while the cold dark face is in permanent darkness.
  • The world experiences libration - a regular wobble - as it orbits, causing the star to move in the sky.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Herapath is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Herapath has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Herapath has 55-65% of its surface covered in a vast but thin icecap made up of Ice-9.

  • It entirely covers the dark face, with glaciers extending into the twilight zone .

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

The planet is old, with little tectonic activity, but there are several ranges of low mountains and hills across the surface.

  • The bright face region is arid, with temperatures at steady 60°C at the extreme bright point.
  • The entirety of the world's dark face is covered by a substance called Ice-9, with huge glaciers extending into and through what would normally be the more temperate twilight zone region.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Herapath is a standard-sized world with a thin, dry atmosphere, but with water of strange composition. Though it is clearly a hot world, it retains a huge but thin ice cap that almost entirely covers the dark face. While the icecap is formed from water-ice, the water is of an "impossible" configuration that has been dubbed "Ice-9", which appears to have a freezing point of 45.8°C.

This form of ice can be harvested for moisture, if one is careful. According to the local researchers, Ice-9 acts catalytically to immediately freeze any liquid water that touches it, forming additional Ice-9: several researchers froze to death after coming into contact with the substance. Thus far, research has no answers as to the origin of Ice-9.

The star's constant flare activity causes interference, strange tones and noises, and heavy static on commo and sensors.

Scout Note
Entry Date: 305-1094
The researcher-in-chief, Dr. Samuel Johnston, insisted that we [the survivors of the Confederation Scout team] leave immediately after our required tour. He pointedly commented that coming here was foolish and dangerous, stating that "the only good reason to allow someone here is to transport research personnel, or to drop off uranium fuel."

Recommendation: Red Zone classification.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Herapath has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Herapath has a population of 30 sophonts (tens).

  • This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without significant outside assistance. This may represent a transient population such as the crew of a starship, the final survivors of a dying colony, an advance team setting up to receive colonists, or a small outpost where establishing a colony is not the primary objective.
  • The population almost entirely consists of Solomani humans.

Urbanization[edit]

The outpost lies in a desert region near the trailing twilight point. The colony itself is approximately 1 km away from the local glacier point there.

A fission power-station operates 3 separate molten-salt reactors, which work well in the environment as they do not require water.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The most commonly heard languages are:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Herapath possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World Government (G)[edit]

Herapath is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.

World Law (L)[edit]

Herapath has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
