Marava is an agricultural, nonindustrial world still lacking adequate means to expand its economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Wovoka Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.
- It is a balmy tropical world, with a climate of high temperatures.
- It is a member of the Orient Worlds.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Marava is a binary star system.
- The primary is a yellow main sequence.
- The secondary is an orange main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x10 secondary rocky worlds.
- x2 planetoid belts.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Marava orbits towards the inner edge of its star's habitable zone.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Marava is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Marava has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. The Thin Atmosphere does not require survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- It experiences relatively high temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Marava has 75-85% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few large continents and extensive islands. Wilderness refueling is possible.
- Dense fogs, mists, and steams rise from the warm waters.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
(Blank map, predominantly watery world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Marava is a member of the Orient Worlds, a small group of systems in the spinward-rimward corner of Wovoka Subsector, in Aldebaran Sector.
Society is divided into four castes: the High, the Upper, the Merits, and the Lower, with the High Caste portraying themselves as something like nobility, but not quite. The old word snooty seems to fit when any member of a higher caste interacts with a lower caste individual. "Groveling subservience" might best describe members of lower castes interacting with members of higher castes. Failure to follow caste norms and rules can result in legal penalties and social ostracism.
Solomani Security keeps a close eye on things to ensure the security of the Solomani State and the well-being of its loyal citizens. Almost anyone could be a SolSec informant, passing on all sorts of useful information: some gain a reward or benefit for their actions, others are coerced, while many see it as an act of duty to help protect the the State and its interests.
World Starport[edit]
Marava has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
Marava maintains an adequate downport on an isolated plateau about 250 km from the coastal city of Capitol. It is connected by a maglev route.
| Marava Highport exists. It is a large but primitive space station, built without windows, typically holding no more than ten personnel at any given time, though with capacity for up to sixteen in times of need. As a member of the Scout Service, I paid the Highport a port call, and exchanged gifts and food. Nice folks, but they appeared to be bored out of their minds. Still, it made the worldnet news and got me free resupply, information, and meals in exchange for a quick supply run to their Highport. Generally, they were interested in normal news for about a week, then they lost interest in me.
Be advised that the rate of suicides and psychotic episodes on the station is higher than on most other worlds, perhaps due to the depressing lack of regular sunlight. Memoirs of a Casual Traveller |
World Population (P)[edit]
Marava has a population of 2,000,000 sophonts (millions).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- More than 95% of the population (in excess of 1.9 million individuals) consists of Solomani humans.
- Less than 5% of the population (fewer than 100,000 individuals) is made up of Dolphins.
Urbanization[edit]
Marava has a single large city, called Capitol, which is surrounded by the Capitol Development Zone, the region where settlement and agriculture is permitted: a number of small communities lie within this area. Capitol has an extensive harbor and a large shipyard. It is connected by a maglev train to the downport – this track and the supporting infrastructure is the only permitted development outside of the Development Zone.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Delphinic Trinary, the principal language of Dolphins.
- Rim Anglic, a dialect of Anglic and the principal language of the Confederation.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Marava possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles.
- Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
- Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Marava is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions within the government. These positions are inherited by members of the group or by their relatives. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.
World Military[edit]
Marava maintains an army, primarily for training their youth and responding to disasters. Its wet navy is more extensive, with a number of large vessels fitted with modern weaponry, multiple smaller craft, combat aircraft, and missiles capable of reaching low orbit.
World Law (L)[edit]
Marava has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Portable energy weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
