Zegzaen is a nonindustrial, rich, agricultural world with improving living conditions due to a bustling agro-economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- This is a rich world with a prosperous and thriving world economy.
- Its economy is bustling and an increase in living conditions is expected in the near future.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by Vargr sophonts located in the Aegaek Subsector of Tuglikki Sector.
- This world-system has a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships, which may be located on or off-world.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Zegzaen has a solitary primary star.
- It is a white main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x8 secondary rocky worlds.
- x2 planetoid belts.
- x2 gas giants.
Note that the star/system bodies are named in Gvegh, not the locally spoken Aekhu language.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Zegzaen is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Zegzaen has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. A Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear and will likely be easy for most sophonts to breathe.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Zegzaen has 35-45% of its surface covered by liquid water. There will be a number of small seas or one larger body of water. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Satellites[edit]
Zagzaen has two moons: Aegvafouz and Gezezanagsoukhngaegh.
- They orbit once every few weeks.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world currently exists within AAB Library Data records.
While it is possible to walk around the world once without leaving land, it cannot be done a second time without venturing onto the southern icecap because of the Western Ocean (the Kukasou) which stretches from polar icecap to polar icecap.
Two thousand kilometres west of the starport lies the Rraengngungnarnuetae, a region of broken basaltic plateau rising to 2000 meters above sea level and split by deep valleys up to 1600 meters deep. The basalt overlies softer sandstone and limestone formations and when the hard cap rock wears away, the underlying rocks wash out relatively quickly. At Edza it is possible to step (leap) over from one side of a 1000 meter-deep canyon to the other - though it is not recommended.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
The native flora of Zegzaen is spectacular, running to the bluer end of the spectrum compared to Lair, but well within tolerable boundaries. On top of this, the predilection of the population to bring in seeds from everywhere has seen the flora transformed by plants from many, many other locations. It has one of the most diverse ecologies in charted space as a result. Over a million off-world species are known to have been introduced, either accidentally or as a result of deliberate cultivation.
Conversely, the native fauna of Zegzaen is sparse. This has been added to by passing starships over the last two millenia, but it still isn't entirely stable and many seemingly rich ecological niches are empty.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Zegzaen was a small colony, largely populated by transients, until -78. At that time a large group of Gvegh Vargr fleeing political trouble elsewhere in the region moved in and took over.
The greatest daughter of the world is Oganozga Zegzaen, an ecological and biological genius and the individual who created the foundations of the world's unique culture. She is noted as the grand-daughter of one of the most prominent founders of the original settlement. During her long life she is said to have introduced over 80,000 plant species to the planet and to have gene-tailored several hundred varieties of food-plant, a dozen or so for medical use and (in her spare time) many of the pot-and garden-plants now grown around Tuglikki, Deneb, and even the Spinward Marches Sectors. Her exploits are near legendary, including her having trapped a thief with a tangle-vine, poisoned an entire mercenary group raiding her seed banks, and healing one of the more famous Vargr Corsair captains of the period using a plant grown for the purpose overnight.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Zegzaen has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
- The world is host to a Vargr Naval Base.
World Population (P)[edit]
Zegzaen has a population of 7,000,000 sophonts (millions).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
- 30% of the population is Aekhu Vargr
- 70% of the population is Gvegh Vargr
- Less than 1% of the population is Human descended from refugees of Vilani origin evacuated from Khouth and Mikesh between 1135 and 1138
- Less than 1% of the population is Suedzuk Vargr descended from Red Pelt mercenaries employed on-world
Urbanization[edit]
Other than the sprawling startown at the starport, there are few habitations with more than around a thousand inhabitants.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Zegzaen possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles.
- Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
- Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Zegzaen is governed by a Charismatic Dictatorship. Charismatic governments justify their ability to rule by simply asserting their right to rule. Charismatic dictatorships are typically young governments, coming as a recent change, and rely on the leader(s) to supply head of government.
World Law (L)[edit]
Zegzaen has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 0 (unimportant)
The planet has long been a net exporter of foodstuffs. At it's height it was exporting enough food to support nearly 3 billion people for a year, each year.
- It is a net importer of "waste bioproducts" to replace essential nutrients lost to the world's biosphere through the process of goods being exported offworld.
- Such organic produce must be carefully screened before being permitted onto the world's surface.
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: C (very abundant)
- Labor: 5 (hundreds of thousands)
- Infrastructure: 4 (very limited)
- Efficiency: -2 (fair)
The economy is based on plants and their products - foods, flavourings, fibers, dyes, construction materials, resins and gums, chemical and medicinal applications, narcotics, and related areas such as gene-tailoring. In this one area, the planet is considered substantially above the general local tech level determined by surveys. The planet jealously guards its seedbanks and has successfully resisted efforts by the greedy corporations and sinister organizations to access them. The world's agricultural specialization is horticulture.
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 4 (harmonious)
- Acceptance: 6 (aloof)
- Strangeness: 3 (somewhat typical)
- Symbols: 6 (somewhat concrete)
Zegzaen culture is centered on plants and has a rich heritage of introducing plants to the planet, whatever their origin. Any new type of plant will always be welcomed by someone.
Zegzaen's Flower Festival is a serious affair, celebrated in each house on the local mid-year day - it occurs only a few times per decade. At this time it is traditional that each person in the household should receive a bloom that they have never previously received. Each household member (or guest) must find one item of one other household member (or guest): it is a grave charge to be the coordinator of the garnering of the appropriate plant for a person. Doubling up on a previous offering is a terrible disgrace. Fortunately, everyone in the house (other than the recipient) is available to give advice.

Later Eras[edit]
The remote location of the planet meant that it was relatively little touched during the period 1140-1200.
The global government fell apart after 1142: the starport and capital were raided by freebooters known as the Red Pelts several times, and with the destruction of that infrastructure small family and clan groups lost contact with the central groups. The general culture is still harmonious, but it is lacking a clear and decisive leader who can draw the disparate groups together.
