History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The Confederation formed around the world of Knokseng in the mid-500s, expanding to include the neutral worlds around it and acting to regulate and protect trade and commerce within its territory. It reached its height in the late 800s but saw increasingly turbulent internal politics. It was defunct by the early 1080s: its former territory became the Dzarrgh Federate.
Government & Politics[edit]
The Knokseng Confederation was an interstellar, multi-system Hegemony, characterized by a very high degree of centralization, strong policies that direct the entire state, and a strong disregard for local/planetary differences.
- It was broadly classified by the Imperium as a Representative Democracy, a form of a Unitary State.
- It was supported by an extensive Civil Service Bureaucracy.
Military Forces[edit]
The Confederation had a powerful navy and an elite marine force. It fielded a large, well-equipped army.
- The state occasionally hired mercenary and corsair forces.
- Much of its standing military was inherited by the Dzarrgh Federate.

Major Historical Events Timeline[edit]
Major events that affected this polity and the wider region that it lies within:
- ca -250,000: The Ancients were active within the sector, transplanting the Vargr onto Lair.
- -9235: the Vilani discover jump technology. A few explorers and settlers begin to pioneer the region.
- -4045 to -2204: the Ziru Sirka claims a few rimward worlds and establishes a firm border. The Windhorn Rift and the absence of any significant Mains discourages large-scale Vilani expansion into the region.
- -3810: the Vargr discover jump technology and begin an era of expansion.
- -2400s: Vargr raiding into human-dominated areas significantly increases. This becomes known as the Vargr Pillaging.
- ca -1700: Vargr rimward expansion gradually ceases: the border between human and Vargr space stabilizes.
- -1776 to 0: the Long Night. There is widespread regression within the area and some worlds become barren.
- The Year 0: to rimward-trailing, the Third Imperium is founded.
- circa 26: the Empire of Varroerth is founded.
- 300-420: the Imperial First Survey charts the sector.
- mid 500s: the Knokseng Confederation is founded.
- 777: the Lair Protectorate is established.
- 995-1065: the Imperial Second Survey charts the polity.
- 1065: the Second Survey is published. Information about the polity becomes widely available.
- 1080s: the Knokseng Confederation is dissolved.
In the 1090s, the former Knokseng worlds were rapidly absorbed by the young and expansionistic Dzarrgh Federate: it also seized formerly neutral worlds along the Imperium's coreward border.
Later Eras[edit]
The New Era[edit]
In 1200, despite hundreds of billions of deaths during the Imperial Rebellion, the subsequent Collapse, and the depredations of Virus, there are beacons of hope for Vargr society in Provence Sector and neighboring Tuglikki Sector. These beacons are the Windhorn Rift worlds, the Llaegskath Interacterate, the new Knokseng Confederation, and the Lair Protectorate.
The New Knokseng Confederation[edit]
In the years before 1200 the Knokseng Confederation reformed from the ruins of the short-lived Dzarrgh Federate, centered on the garden world of Knokseng and adopting the name of the old 6th century state that had previously dominated the region. Although it boasts an impressive membership of twelve worlds, it is little more than a mutual support group akin to the early days of the Dawn League in the Old Expanses.
It drew heavily on the history, heritage, and traditions of the old Knokseng state, using them to legitimize its authority. It includes a cluster of five worlds, to trailing, that were historically never part of the Confederation.
