The Aekhu Vargr of Lair (Provence 2402) are a Vargr Ethnic Group. The Vargr are a Canidoid Race with a humanoid body plan. Like all Vargr, the Aekhu are technologically advanced sophonts. The name is a reference to their most common pelt colour -- "Aek" means "black", and "Gvegh-Aek" or "Gvaek" means "tawny-black".

The Vargr are a Canidoid Major Race, with a humanoid body plan, derived from Ancient genetic manipulation of Terran carnivore/chaser stock, apparently dating from approximately the same time that Humaniti was scattered to the stars. Vargr are a species known for extreme behavioral range, social nature, and an irascible spirit.

Aekhu is a small region located coreward of Deneb Sector along the Imperial border. Just as some Vargr were attracted towards the Gvegh Region by the Zhodani, others were drawn to Aekhu by their interest in the Imperium. Although this region is small, its cultural influence has expanded and mixed with both Gvegh Region and Logaksu cultures, forming two secondary regions spinward and trailing respectively. These secondary regions are both larger than the Aekhu region itself.

The attitudes of Vargr in this region are among the most diverse in the Vargr Extents, especially where religion, ethics and patriotism are concerned. Opinions are so often contrasting and opposed that changes in this region are more frequent and extreme than any other Vargr culture.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The contrasting viewpoints and beliefs of this culture give a much greater importance to the family than any other pack. Aekhu Vargr often remain in regular contact with their siblings and it is not uncommon for them to live or work together, especially if they are litter-mates.

Whereas the Gvegh Vargr are known for the ease with which a ruler can sway a populace, the Aekhu are individually erratic in their attitude to almost everything. This fluctuation tends to even out over a large enough population, meaning that Aekhu governments are actually more stable than in many Vargr regions. However, individual Aekhu Vargr can change their religious and moral beliefs, and political views, all but overnight. Overall laws and tariffs vary infrequently, but their interpretation and implementation can differ widely. Trade in the Aekhu region is thus much more subdued than in the Gvegh states. Large interstellar conflicts are also less common, because the Vargr leaders can rarely decide on a consistent enemy for more than a few weeks. But at an individual level, personal conflict is quite commonplace. This makes the Aekhu regions quite hazardous for visitors.
