Mainworld Data[edit]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Gabrael is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away. The planet is 7750km radius and 24350km circumference.
It has a gravity of 0.65G.
Day Length: 28 hours
Orbital Year: 198 days

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Gabrael has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world. The atmosphere is tainted with the local equivalent of pollen which can cause an extremely unpleasant reaction when inhaled. The average temperature is 18 Celsius.[2]

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Gabrael has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

Gabrael’s largest township is named Tsabad[3]. It lies on the Gamago River, twenty kilometres from the abandoned ruins of the old imperial starport. Tsabad consists of a warehouse district, an urban core, and a corporate centre - and is surrounded by residential areas.

The once prestigious Esali College[4] is also located in the core of the town and remains the planet's premier educational institute. (All of it's tutors survived the wave having been designated a priority group). The College is not part of any township, enjoys various rights and privileges backed by all townships and persons admitted to its grounds can only be extracted if the College agrees, originally designed to allow academic freedom, but occasionally used for political asylum.

To the north of Tsabad (upstream on the Gamago) lies the township of Tenjann and (beyond Prisma Canyon, in the Benjacquin Highlands) is the township of Feyr[5].

Lifeforms[edit]

Fauna[edit]

No native fauna of Gabrael flies. All flying creatures on the world are imports (e.g. Chicken). n.b. The Flying Drynet, native to the eastern plains, glides rather than flies and cannot maintain or gain altitude.

The Muugagen Pigbird has gone feral and is now found wild on Gabrael.[2]

There has been an historic trade in Doyle’s Eel on Gabrael, but these creatures are illegal, dangerous and (probably) only being kept by limited specialist collectors.[6]

Flora[edit]

Nyflan's Fern[7] is a psionic plant that eliminates appetite in nearby creatures - thus ensuring the plant's safety - or just makes you feel happy. This is found in a number of poorer houses on Gabrael but is not native.

Calabaa Trees are grown in plantations on Gabrael and the resulting drink, "Calabaa", exported to the subsector.

Sensitive Umoth reacts badly to Human contact. The oils from the skin transferred during an unprotected human contact tend to cause the plant to die within a few days. Other varieties of Umoth don’t have this reaction.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

World Starport[edit]

Summary[edit]

Gabrael has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld. Of the 11 main townships, all maintain limited ship repair capabilities, and three actively manufacture small craft.

The original Highport was recovered from L2 orbit and returned to geostationary orbit above Tsabad in 1588. Parts have been refurbished. The planet operates lighterage services to and from the port or other points in orbit. For reasons of security, only vessels with local lightermen aboard are permitted to make touchdown on the world's Downports. It is administered by a committee under a rotating chairmanship arrangement between the 11 townships.

World Technology Level[edit]

Gabrael possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Advanced automobiles.
    • Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
    • Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
    • Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

The planet has a surprisingly complex industrial capability based in small-workshops in the various townships. Mass produced goods from large industrial planets are occasionally seen, but infrequently available for sale.

World Government[edit]

Summary[edit]

The planetary government of Gabrael was unable to maintain central authority during those years when the planet's population had descended to TL–5.

Gabrael has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

There are 11 major townships (n.b. Township is a governmental unit not a settlement).

The main line of the family of the Knight's Seneschal, left to govern the planet after the Abandonment, ruled over Tsabad for nearly a quarter of a millennia before being overthrown in a coup in 1412. Many of the surviving political elite in the various townships can trace their ancestry back to the Seneschal, and do so proudly. Despite their differences, the world's political class is a fairly stable group (perhaps the Vilani influence) even though the individuals rise and fall from within that group (a more Vargr characteristic). Even descendants of the Red Pelts, initially much reviled, have climbed into these upper echelons of local power brokers.

World Law Level[edit]

Summary[edit]

The change of law level represented a reaction to the Virus and Red Pelts. The additional restrictions noted applied to non-residents.

Gabrael has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Light assault weapons, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Military[edit]

2 Battalions.

World Economy[edit]

Gabrael was once the centre of a wide trade network across 4 sectors. The frequency and reliability of the trade networks has diminished, but the network has faltered on.

Trade Data[edit]

The existence of working starship's in the early part of the planet's post-collapse history gave it a massive advantage in that it was able to trade and raid over a wide area. As time has progressed, it's continued ability to maintain vessels has meant that the infrequent trading convoys that traverse the region still rely upon the world for crew, life support and maintenance. Goods manufactured here are sold on multiple foreign planets via these passing free traders.

Agricultural Sector[edit]

Visitors could be forgiven for thinking that Gabrael has pretensions of being an Agricultural world but only a small area is intensively farmed. This provides more than enough food for the population and for sale to passing vessels.

World Demographics[edit]

1900: Gabrael has a population of 1,000,000 sophonts (millions).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

Approx 6,000,000

The population of Gabrael was, by the time of the wave, a mixed group of stubborn locals who had declined the navy's offer of relocation during the Abandonment, Piratical Aekhu Vargr refugees from the collapse of the Dzarrgh Federate, Vilani refugees from from the Khouth Subsector fleeing Vargr Occupation and denied residence in the United Followers of Augurgh and Suedzuk Vargr from the Red Pelts tyrrany fleeing retribution. These had, between them, adequate resources to ensure a few thousand people could jump the wave in their rickety fleet of vessels and return.

Their return saw the world devastated. The returning populace found that civil society had collapsed and they were, effectively, establishing a new colony amongst the ruins of the starving, damaged and incapable remains of their brethren. With only limited bodies, only 1% of the original population were able to be saved, and these formed a major drag on the economy until their children started to take up their places in the society nearly two decades later.

During this period, the central government broke down with the more distant townships relying upon their local resources. The fleet that had sustained the population, continued to do so, but the crews relied more and more on their home base for support and less and less on that of the other towns. The one saving factor of the period was the tacit agreement that while other planets were fair game for resource exploitation/raiding, other settlements on Gabrael itself were off limits.

World Culture[edit]

Gabrael was renowned for its level of social equality: Vargr are very comfortable relating with Imperial humans. Many enter professions where the two races interact. The townships each had a mix of Human and Vargr families. The political power wielded by each group varied but in most the pull of location and the sense of "Us against the Universe" outweighed racial divisions. United, the towns prospered; divided, they did not.

The 700 years of relative isolation have seen the various towns develop unique local patois based on Aekhu, Vilani and Anglic. The prevalence of Vargr contacts for the few ships that remained servicable meant that the main inter-regional trade language was a derivative of Aekhu.

On Gabrael, it has always been considered polite to bring a gift to those visited.[2] This has been developed into a web of gift-obligations and the giving and receiving of gifts is a major part of the social hierarchy of the world.

Women on Gabrael have complex arrangements around the begetting and maintenance of children tied to the gift-obligation networks noted above.

Urbanization[edit]

Tsabad remains the central township, but new settlements have sprung up over the last half millenium as Townships have relocated to more favourable locations.

The peripheral districts of Tsabad were mined for resources by multiple groups and the town is much diminished from its Imperial glory. The Grav-Structures had all gone as part of the abandonment, and even their skeletons were cut up by 1300. The Knight's Palace remains the seat of Tsabad's government and the building (externally much altered by repairs needing substitute materials) survives to the pride of the town's residents

The grav-based railway that once stretched from Tsabad to the Starport has been abandoned as the imperial-era starport was destroyed by elements of a Vampire Fleet. The track-bed remains as a roadway, and its bridges are still used as transport connections.

Architecture[edit]

The architecture of Gabrael still includes internal over-pressure using filtered air and air-lock style doors.

A locally grown resin has become a major feature of Gabrael's architecture. It is water-proof and easily poured into flat and curved panels, or sculpted into shape while it sets. Unlike the local brick and stone, it can be flamboyantly coloured.

Fashion[edit]

Gabrael has continued its riotous love of colour, and the existence of local flora and fauna capable of being used in the manufacture of fine fabrics has seen these incorporated into local manufactures.
