The Chicken is a creature lifeform that is not a sophont.

  • This is a native of Terra

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Chicken is an omnivore native to Terra (Solomani Rim 1827) but has become endemic throughout space inhabited by (presently or historically) Humaniti and Vargr

Physiology & Ecology[edit]

Roosters (Males) can be distinguished from Hens (Females) by the presence of long flowing tails and pointed, shiny and nore colourful feathers on their necks and backs. In many breeds, the head is decorated with a fleshy crest (comb) and/or hanging flaps of flesh each side of their beak (wattles). Domestic chickens are not capable of long distance flight, although lighter individuals are generally capable of flying for short distances, such as over fences or into trees (where they would naturally roost). Chickens may occasionally fly briefly to explore their surroundings, but generally do so only to flee perceived danger.

Individual Chickens are almost harmless, the Roosters may attack if their territory is threatened and flocks may gang-up on small or inexperienced predators, but mostly these creatures will flee any and all unfamiliar creatures of larger size.

Life Cycle & Reproduction[edit]

Chickens are actively bred on a number of worlds primarily as part of animal husbandry and livestock agriculture. Generally the atmosphere must be at least Thin. Some varieties have also been selectively bred or genetically engineered for planets with particular forms of tainted atmospheres.

Chickens lays eggs which incubate for about 21 days before hatching as chicks. Hens fiercely guard their chicks, and brood them when necessary to keep them warm, at first often returning to the nest at night. She leads them to food and water and will call them toward edible items, but seldom feeds them directly. She continues to care for them until they are several weeks old.

Chickens may live several years, but most that are raised for meat will be slaughtered at 6-14 weeks, and those raised for commercial egg production usually live less than two years.

Diet & Trophics[edit]

Chickens are omnivorous intermittents, whose diet is the plant-life and small creatures of their homeworld of Terra (Solomani Rim 1827) and other worlds onto which they have been transplanted.

The Chicken is predated by almost any carnivore that can catch it on all worlds on which it is found. Chickens have brought various types of disease with them as they have spread across space, including some that are transmissible from/to Humaniti and Vargr.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The Chicken is the domesticated version of the Wild Jungle Fowl of Terra and was domesticated at least 5000 years prior to the Solomani emerging into space. The birds have been Selectively Bred, Genetically Engineered, they have escaped and gone Feral, been recaptured and re-domesticated. The presence of Feral Chickens on an otherwise uninhabited planet has even been used as an indicator for failed colonies.

Derived Products (Goods)[edit]

Chickens are used as a source of Meat, Feathers, Bones, Collagen and Eggs.

The Meat is widely prized by Humaniti (including Solomani, Vilani and Zhodani) and Vargr. Aslan tend to view the bird as famine-food.

Travellers' Aid Society Advisory[edit]

Chickens are largely a docile livestock creature and are widely considered harmless. They have a TAS green advisory and are not considered dangerous.

Species Notes[edit]

This species has been subject to selective breeding and genetic engineering during its long association with Humaniti. The statistics above are based on the most common varieties seen in the Imperium but bioengineered derivatives of up to 100kg are known to have been created.
