Orcrist has two stars in the star system.

System Data

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

The Orcrist system has two stars, the primary Thorin and its companion, Thranduil. They lie approximately 0.32 AU apart.

Mainworld Data

Orcrist, designated the mainworld, is the sole moon of the large gas giant Dvergur: it is tidally locked, keeping one side permanently facing its giant primary world. It orbits at a distance of 3 diameters (approximately 450,000 km) and has an orbital period of 41 hours 31 minutes.

In addition the primary star, Thorin, appears to circle Orcrist as well.

Gas Giant Moons 09b.jpg

The mainworld and its gas giant primary world orbit within the prime region of Thorin's habitable zone.

  • They orbit the star once every 240 standard days.
  • The gas giant is "puffy", warm and swollen due to the levels of energy it receives from the star.

Mainworld Size (S)

Orcrist is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Orcrist has an Exotic Atmosphere and possesses an unusual gas mix which requires the use of oxygen tanks. Additionally, protective suits, while not necessary, are recommended. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Orcrist has 55-65% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice heavily tainted with other substances, which makes it dangerous, corrosive, or toxic. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds may be Hell Worlds.

  • The water on the surface may be unsuitable for use or consumption without extensive filtering and purification.
  • Refining for fuel may cause issues with shipboard purification plants.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)

Orcrist is a relatively young world with a normal climate. The world is undergoing terraforming, seeding the surface with algae and bacteria to convert the atmosphere into a more normal oxygen-nitrogen mixture. See: Orcrist Soil Manufacturing Project.

World Starport (St)

Orcrist has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)

Orcrist has a population of 40,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).

Urbanization

Orcrist's capital city is Grevistad; its downport is Groenhamm Starport.

World Technology Level (T)

Orcrist possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)

Orcrist is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions within the government. These positions are inherited by members of the group or by their relatives. The organization may be a monarchy, with titles passed to family members, or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Alternatively, the organization may be a more typical government apparatus, only with positions of power inherited.

World Military

Despite its significant industrial base and large population, Orcrist has a small military. It contributed more than its share of funds to the Confederation budget, but its own navy is almost entirely defensive in nature.

World Law (L)

Orcrist has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
