Nexine is a nonindustrial water world, which has 90% or more of its surface covered in an ocean of water.
- The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Mora Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector in the Domain of Deneb.
- This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
- This world has an Imperial Scout base, capable of handling IISS starships and personnel.
- It is a member of the Palique Cluster.
- It is the homeworld of the Nexxies, a Variant Human Race.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Nexine is a binary star system.
- The primary is a yellow main sequence.
- The secondary is a red main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x10 secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 gas giant.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Nexine is a Big World between 13,600km and 15,200km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 1G and 1.3G. The horizon will appear about 5.4km away. Vessels with only 1G of thrust should avoid landing on this world.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Nexine has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences generally moderate temperatures.
- The taint is created by excess moisture that makes it extremely uncomfortable to breathe.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Nexine has 95-100% of its surface covered by liquid water with only a few islands and archipelagos. Wilderness refueling is possible. Such worlds are Water Worlds or Ocean Worlds.
Mainworld Topography and Geography[edit]
A basic map of Nexine, showing the oceans and the various small islands and archipelagos that dot the surface.
- The starport and the city of Underport are marked in red.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
The gemores produced by Nexine coral generally resemble russet-red pearls. Their concentrated mineral content makes them valuable. After minimal refining efforts involving crushing, heating, and centrifuging, gemores yield quantities of very pure materials of strategic importance.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Nexine is located adjacent to the industrial center of Palique on both the coreward Xboat route from Mora and also the Jump-2 route into Trin's Veil and ultimately Glisten subsectors.
Unfortunately, Nexine is far too underpopulated to take advantage of its favorable location. A limited population dwells in small, far-flung communities situated across the globe. Many attempts have been made to attract immigrants to the water world, but most weren't successful. Current efforts are focused on seeding the world with humans genetically engineered for amphibious lifestyles — the so-called Nexxies. Some of the Imperial scientists working in Nexine's oceans are uplifted dolphins.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Nexine has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population (P)[edit]
Nexine has a population of 80,000 sophonts (tens of thousands).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
Most of the population are Nexxies, genetically engineered Humans designed for an amphibious lifestyle. A small number of Dolphins migrated here in 1108, but their integration into Nexine society was not a success. [2]
- The Dolphin pods are limited to the polar regions of Nexine where, due to deepwater currents, mineral concentrations are lower than elsewhere on the planet. Visitors to the polar waters find the Dolphins aloof at best -- and strangely territorial regarding certain natural caverns.
Urbanization[edit]
The settlement known as Underport was the first true Nexxie community, and is now the nominal capital of Nexine. It was the testing site for Imperial Gentech's first altered and natural-born Nexxies, and as such is home to many of the original altered Nexxies and their offspring.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The following languages are most commonly heard:
- Anglic, one of the two official languages of the Imperium.
- Delphinic Trinary (also known as Delphinese). It is the language of Dolphins, involving various clicks, rasps, chirps, creaks, hoots and whistles.
- Due to the spread of Dolphins across Charted Space, it has evolved into a multitude of dialects. It can take a Dolphin some time to learn a new dialect; errors are often seen by both parties as humorous.
- For communication with humans and other races, most Dolphins speak ordinary, if flowery, Anglic.
- Nexine: An artificial language, a combination of signs and audible words developed for underwater communication.
- Vilani, one of the two official languages of the Imperium.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Nexine possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles.
- Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
- Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Nexine is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
- Everyone over the age of 16 contributes to both local and planetary politics. Unaltered workers who live on Nexine are also allowed a vote if they have at least three years of residency. Since unaltered Humans find the conditions on Nexine uncomfortable and tend to rotate offworld after a two-year tour, there are few enfranchised "dryfeet" (as Nexxies call them).
World Law (L)[edit]
Nexine has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
Imperial Landed Nobility[edit]
Nexine, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: -2 (very unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: 7 (few)
- Labor: 3 (thousands)
- Infrastructure: 1 (extremely limited)
- Efficiency: -5 (extremely poor)
A byproduct of Nexine coral is the most valuable export, but most technological extraction processes are damaging to the coral. After closed-door negotiations with the Ministry of Conservation, the Nexine Mining Consortium offered shares to anyone willing to undergo bionic and genetic alteration at the Consortium's expense -- the origin of the Nexxie variant race. Early projections regarding the potential productivity of the coral beds was strong inducement -- the new population of underwater "miners" was almost guaranteed to become millionaires in a relatively short time.
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 1 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: 2 (very xenophobic)
- Strangeness: 2 (typical)
- Symbols: 5 (concrete)
World Timeline[edit]
Major events that have affected this world and the wider region that it lies within:
- The Year 0: the Third Imperium is founded.
