The Maralee is a preindustrial world.

  • As a preindustrial world, this planet cannot yet manufacture enough high-technology resources to support a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • This world hopes to one day be one of the subsector's industrial powerhouses, but hasn't yet realized that dream. The leaders of this world are regularly embarking on trade missions to attract more investment capital, worker-immigrants, and other necessary stepping stones to achieve this goal.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Palasha Subsector of Massilia Sector in the Domain of Sylea.
  • It lies on the Delphi Main.
  • It is a member world of the Duchy of Forquee.
  • At the founding of the Imperium this world was known as Uumbuu.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

  • x3 gas giants. These are (in order out from the star):

Chart The Maralee System Basic.jpg

Mainworld Data[edit]

  • The planet has an axial tilt of 15.43 degrees
  • The Maralee has a sidereal day length of 33.29 Hours
  • The planet takes 271.48 days to rotate around its sun.
  • The planet only has 2 tectonic plates however the movement of these plates have resulted in a significant number of small volcanoes and regions containing geysers.
  • Native life does exist on the planet however there are no sentient sophont species. The flora is mainly hardy grasses that are often silver or have a bluish sheen in colour. Across the sea bed coral like structures grow in abundance. The native fauna is insectoid in nature or very simple microbial creatures. The flora and fauna is not edible and is in fact poisonous to all known races except for those native to the planet.
  • The planet has been surveyed and classified as habitable with proper protective equipment being used where required and necessary precautions being taken where needed.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

The Maralee is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

  • The planet has been extensively surveyed and the diameter has been accurately established now as 7957 km.
  • The planetary survey confirmed that The Maralee has a metal core with a density of 1.42 Standard (7.82 g/cc).
  • Surface gravity of the planet is 0.89g

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

The Maralee has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

  • The Maralee has an atmosphere tainted with sulphur dioxide compounds as a result of the extensive volcanic and seismic activity on the planet's surface. The severity of this taint is hazardous enough that filter masks must be worn at all times when outside of any sealed facility. The severity of the taint does shift throughout the day dependent upon prevailing weather conditions but this also brings with it other hazards related to weather conditions.
  • The weather conditions of the planet are heavily monitored due to the sulphur dioxide taint. Rain can be problematic as the sulphur effectively falls as sulfurous acidic rain. Such storms can be hazardous to those caught outside without effective protective equipment although they are extremely rare. The most extreme and dangerous weather that can occur is a thick sulphuric fog. This weather condition causes external operation to cease and locals know to not venture outside at such times.
  • The constant scent of sulphur in the air often catches visitors off guard but locals are almost "immune" to the smell and only seem to notice it if its pointed out to them.
  • The mean surface temperature of the planet is 26.8°C / 80.2f. There are regions of the planet surface however where the temperature is more extreme. There are a number of desert regions where the highest recorded temperature has been 67°C/153f and around the south pole the lowest recorded temperature has been -34°C/-29f.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

The Maralee has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.

  • The Maralee has 3 small seas. The water is drinkable but only after extensive treatment due to the sulphuric taint from the atmosphere. The population of the planet makes use of the oceans by locating their urban areas alongside the water and next to large processing plants that provide the drinking water required by the population.
  • The seas are fairly shallow with the deepest parts being no more than 750ft / 230 meters. The water quickly becomes dark and murky. Even in these hostile conditions though life does exist with small microbial creatures existing amongst vivid coloured coral like structures that live on the sea bed.

Local water treatment facilities have been especially strengthened with extensive filters to ensure sulphur compounds do not make it into the drinking water supply.

History & Background (Dossier)[3][edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

The Maralee lies at the furthest reach of the Delphi Main, an important trade route straddling the border between Massilia Sector and Delphi Sector.

  • Its location, although part of the Delphi Main has at this point not provided the impetus for development that was hoped for. Repeated attempts to encourage megacorporations to take an interest in the planet have met with limited success. There are small corporations on the planet actively engaged in sulphur mining operations but the minimal investment in the starport has held the world back from being truly able to exploit its natural resources.
  • A recent engagement with Grencon Industries has resulted in a small amount of investment from the Kaggushus system. This engagement has resulted in a small contingent (less than 100) Kaggushan scientists and engineers moving to The Maralee to look for investment opportunities that can be exploited for the benefit of all.

World Starport (St)[edit]

The Maralee has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

  • The port on The Maralee is poorly maintained At best it can accommodate a total ship tonnage of c400 tons at anyone time. The majority of ships that stop at The Maralee are small 100, 200 ton independent trading vessels.
  • Maintenance facilities are limited with work usually carried out by the ships crew themselves with whatever materials can be obtained at the starport. Extensive repairs will often require a layover whilst parts are procured from out system and brought to The Maralee.
  • Its location on the Delphi Main means there are still ships arriving most weeks but they arrive at an average rate of 1-2 vessels per week. It is rare for them to stay for extended periods and its usual for them to be delivering mail or seeking to refuel.

World Population (P)[edit]

The Maralee has a population of 80,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).

Urbanization[edit]

There are six major cities.

Bluemont (Capital city and the location of the starport): population c.4,416,000

  • Located on the shores of the northern polar sea. The city is dominated by large skyscrapers constructed in a harsh industrial style. The city has good local infrastructure and is the heart of government on the planet.

Vadan: population c.3,312,000

  • Located on the shores of the northern polar sea but almost 3000 km from the capital at Bluemont and its associated starport. A road network connects the two cities along with a small seaport and airport for movement of products and passengers.

Carollan: population c.9,200,000

  • Carollan is the major mining hub of the The Maralee. Located alongside extensive sulphur mines the city is a practical, unrefined place and populated by miners and their families. The environment of the region is tough with higher temperatures than most of the other cities and the air is often full of extensive dust clouds from the constant mining operations that spread out for hundreds of miles from the city.
    • Carollan is the only city that is not located next to an expanse of water. As a result the city draws water from deep below the planetary surface from deep wells that have been drilled.

Binham: population c.3,750,000

  • Binham is often nicknamed the "Greenhouse". The city houses a significant amount of the agricultural facilities that provide the population with food. The "food factories" are all long established greenhouse type arrangements that are huge in scale and often can be 2-3 kms in length.

Winarth: population c.4,200,000

  • Located on the shores of the south polar sea. The only access to this city is via aircraft. The city is centred around ocean exploration and exploitation. The government hope to open up a new revenue stream for the planet after finding potential mineral resource deep beneath the ocean floor. As a result engineers and their families have been located in a new purpose built city to carry that exploration and development out.

Menhoun: population c.3,242,000

  • In many ways Menhoun is a twin to Winarth. Both cities were established for the same reason but their location several thousand kilometres apart is allowing exploration to be expanded across a further region of the south polar sea.

The remaining c51.8 million people are scattered across hundreds of small communities across the planet. These communities are usually centred around the extensive agricultural factories and mining sites that provide both food and income to the population.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The most commonly heard languages are:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

The Maralee possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone, radio, and television.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fission power generation, advanced water and wind generation of electricity.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
  • The following tech levels can be applied to the The Maralee
    • High Common TL:6
    • Low Common TL:3
    • Further Subcategories:-
      • Energy TL:7 (Geothermal power is the standard across the planet utilising super heated steam leveraging volcanic and geyser activity to produce a very efficient energy supply that is readily available across the planet.)
      • Electronics TL:5 (Radio is the most common form of communication with radio stations transmitting across the planet, computers are still huge machines that fill rooms and buildings and television is still in its infancy)
      • Manufacturing TL:5 (Manufacturing is based upon the principle of heavy industry. Large machines, lots of labour resource and repetitive tasks carried out on assembly lines. It should be noted that The Maralee is not an Industrial world however. The factory facilities on the planet produce what the population needs and little else. Such needs are linked to the extensive mining industry and the infrastructure needed to support that.)
      • Medical TL:5 (Hospital facilities are well established although nowhere near as high tech as many in The Imperium. The most advanced forms of technology in use in the hospital on The Maralee are X-Ray machines and equivalent)
      • Environmental TL:6 (Air conditioning linked to air filtration systems are the norm across all structures, even temporary dwellings will have portable air cleaners and recyclers.)
      • Land Transport TL:7 (High speed trains have been developed and tracks are slowly being laid connecting cities across the surface. It should be noted they are used for moving goods not people though)
      • Water Transport TL:7 (Hovercraft are the standard form of water transport due to the shallow relatively calm seas on the planet)
      • Air Transport TL:5 (Planes are in use on the planet although mainly used to transport goods.)
      • Space Transport TL:6 (The government has expanded its education system to develop more capabilities linked to "space based technologies" and at present this involves space planes rather actual starships)
      • Personal Military TL:5 (The most advanced form of technology in use by local militaristic groups eg law enforcement are rifles.)
      • Heavy Military TL:5 (The most advanced form of technology used that is classified as heavy military are the armoured patrol vehicles utilised by planetary law enforcement)

World Government (G)[edit]

The Maralee is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

The government on the planet is a unitary power base with the dominant government infrastructure located in the city of Bluemont.

The government operates via the use of various Executive Authorities that make up the government departments. The main departments are:

  • Department of Justice
  • Department of Trade
  • Department of Mining & Prospecting
  • Department of Labour
  • Department of Commerce
  • Department of Education

Interlinking all the departments and sub-departments are multiple councils all with their own often very niche and bespoke requirements

Despite the grumblings of the local populace the government has always been this way. Lots of bureaucracy, meetings and paperwork with no real alternate faction or challenge to its authority.

World Law (L)[edit]

The Maralee has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors).

  • The justice system on The Maralee is best described as "Inquisitorial". Its often defined as an administrative legal system. A group of 3 "justices" investigate each offence to establish if a crime as been committed based upon prior legal precedents and statutes. Decisions of guilt are based upon a majority decision by the 3 justices.
  • The law applies to all and there is no discrimination based on any external influence.
  • There is no presumption of innocence in place. The justices are looking to establish the severity of the offence as once a suspect has been brought in front of the justices by the law enforcement officers it is assumed the individual did commit an offence. At this stage in the process it is more a case of which laws were broken and to what level.
  • The maximum penalty is death and although it is rarely handed out it does exist. More common is life imprisonment at a labour camp in a particularly hostile environment on the planet.
  • The majority of sentences that are handed out on The Maralee are fines or some level of community service. Prison sentences tend to be measured in months and up to 10 years apart from the most extreme crimes.
  • The law level like all worlds has differing levels and categories and the following levels apply.
    • Overall Level: A
    • Weapons and Armour: 8 (Effectively 98% of weapons and all visible forms of armour are illegal in the general populace)
    • Economic: A (Arduous permitting and zoning exists in all areas of society and day to day life)
    • Criminal Law: B (Arbitrary and potentially indefinite detention is allowed)
    • Private Law: B (Arbitrary government adjudication exists and government level approval is required for all contracts)
    • Personal Rights: A (Restriction on personal movement and also where individuals and their families can live)
  • The Maralee law enforcement organisation also operates in a multi-role capability serving as law enforcement, border control at the starport and finally as a standing army to protect the citizens of The Maralee. The only other military personnel located on the planet for any extended period is a small contingent of Imperial Marines who serve as a defence force for the 2 Imperial Nobles who have facilities located on the planet. Whilst the nobles are in attendance the Marine force is c100 individuals however during leaves of absence this force reduces down to c40 personnel.

Imperial Landed Nobility[edit]

The Maralee, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial Landed Knight who acts as an Imperial representative to the world, and the fiefdom of a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility, who oversees affairs regarding the world at an Interstellar and Imperial level.

  • It holds the estate of an Imperial knight, the Imperial representative to the world.
  • It holds the fiefdom of an Imperial marquis.
  • The estate and facilities owned and operated by the two Imperial nobles are located adjacent to the Starport and situated 25km from the capital of Bluemont.
  • Lord Urshi Gashgumii maintains almost permanent residence on planet acting as the day to day liaison for the Marquis, his liege lord.
  • Marquis Liik Molec is rarely in attendance preferring to maintain his residency in more appropriate surroundings.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: -2 (very unimportant)
  • Additional Economic indicators:-
    • Gross World Product per Capita: 3840cr
    • World Trade Number: 7
    • Inequality Rating: 49
      • c.49% of the population are living at a lower standard than the rest of the population. These individuals are likely to be living in older, substandard facilities and having to work extended hours to provide for themselves.
    • Development Score: 2
    • Tariffs - High
      • The government of The Maralee imposes high tariffs on goods that are imported onto the planet that dont sit within current society norms eg high rating technology items. It is not uncommon for taxes equating to an additional 20% charge to be applied for such items.

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: 9 (moderate)
    • The planet has extensive sulphur mines where the compound is extracted. This material is utilised in other industries both on and off planet although at the point there has been no significant megacorp exploitation activities.
    • In addition to sulphur there are other significant mineral extraction activities taking place across the planet linked to other metals such as copper, zinc and lithium.
  • Labor: 6 (millions)
  • Infrastructure: 5 (limited)
  • Efficiency: +1 (average)

World Culture[edit]

  • Heterogenity: 9 (discordant)
    • Society on The Maralee is not all completed aligned. Diversity in the community does exist between various groups eg miners, office workers, agricultural workers etc. All have very differing views of life on The Maralee and this creates some level of social conflict.
  • Acceptance: 5 (very aloof)
    • The people of The Maralee can appear aloof to outsiders. There world view is one not so much based on superiority to outsiders but more of a "what would you know about our life" approach. Life on The Maralee isnt easy and it is heavily structured and controlled but the local people that is the norm.
    • The people of The Maralee are very conservative in their views. They like the status quo that exists, they may grumble about it but its their way of life and it works for them. They do not easily take to external influences trying to change there cultural mindset.
  • Strangeness: 7 (confusing)
    • The Maralee is no more strange than another world to an off-worlder. Things are different and confusing.
  • Symbols: 8 (somewhat abstract)
    • The use of symbols to define travel zones, living areas, access points etc is common across the planet. Locals are raised to recognise and understand them. Off-worlders will find them confusing and conflicting on occasion.
