Sorel is a nonindustrial, rich, agricultural world with improving living conditions due to a bustling agro-economy.
- As an agricultural world, this world is a near-ideal environment for producing quality foodstuffs of plant, animal, and other forms. Quality foodstuffs are a major export commodity for this world.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
- This is a rich world with a prosperous and thriving world economy.
- Its economy is bustling and an increase in living conditions is expected in the near future.
- It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Glisten Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector in the Domain of Deneb.
- It is a balmy tropical world, with a climate of high temperatures.
- This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below standard for Charted Space.
- Sorel is a member of the Spinward Main.
- It lies on the Glisten Arm
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Sorel is a binary star system.
- The primary is a yellow main sequence.
- The secondary is a red main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x4 secondary rocky worlds.
- x2 planetoid belts.
- x1 gas giant.
Mainworld Data[edit]
The mainworld orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.
- It lies within the zone's warmer inner H+ region
- It receives higher levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Sorel is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Sorel has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- Polar temperatures are moderate. Equatorial temperatures can reach very high levels.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Sorel has 45-55% of its surface covered by liquid water. Wilderness refueling is possible.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Native lifeforms are thermophilic - they thrive in high temperatures.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Sorel serves as a major "breadbasket" for the Glisten subsector, and sees regular visits from corporate bulk-cargo ships. [2]
While earth-like in general, Sorel is quite hot, and is only suitable for human habitation near the poles. The south polar region is currently uninhabited, although various organizations have negotiated for settlement rights occasionally with the ruling councils with no success.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Sorel has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Sorel has a population of 9,000,000 sophonts (millions).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The following languages are most commonly heard:
- Anglic, one of the two official languages of the Imperium.
- Vilani, one of the two official languages of the Imperium.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Sorel possesses a Technology Level of TL–2.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Runners or beast relay, the printing press, long distance signaling such as the heliograph and semaphore.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Water wheels and wind power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Riding beasts and creature-drawn wheeled vehicles.
- Water: Sailing vessels.
- Air: Typically not available unless a bodily ability or ride-able flying beasts available.
World Government (G)[edit]
Sorel is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.
World Law (L)[edit]
Sorel has an extreme law level which covers every area of interaction. Laws are complex, detailed, and difficult to understand. Every interaction with the government requires an Advocate. Law enforcement is omnipresent and strict. Legal proceeding can take months to years to resolve and may involve dozens of people. A few worlds with this law level may be a Red Zone and others will be an Amber Zone. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (with no exception for private residences; visiting starships are only protected so long as they stay within designated starports and approach corridors).
Imperial Landed Nobility[edit]
Sorel, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial Landed Knight who acts as an Imperial representative to the world, and the fiefdom of a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility, who oversees affairs regarding the world at an Interstellar and Imperial level.
- It holds the estate of an Imperial knight, the Imperial representative to the world.
- It holds the fiefdom of an Imperial baron.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: -1 (unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: 8 (moderate)
- Labor: 5 (hundreds of millions)
- Infrastructure: 3 (very limited)
- Efficiency: +1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 8 (discordant)
- Acceptance: 5 (very aloof)
- Strangeness: 7 (confusing)
- Symbols: 4 (concrete)

Alternate History[edit]
A regressed colony originally planted by the Solomani during the Second Imperium. The original infrastructure was destroyed by nuclear war during the Long Night, and technology had recovered to TL–1 by the time of recontact. The IISS maintains a semi-interdiction of the planet at the request of the local rulers. Imperial contact is permitted, but importation of technological items must be approved by both the local rulers and the IISS. Persistent rumors of psionics among the upper classes are "apparently" unfounded.
The original Solomani settlers of Sorel were of mixed races, but their descendants tend toward darker skin than most of the inhabitants of the nearby planets. In addition, the climate makes the wearing of unnecessary clothing quite uncomfortable, leaving even the lighter skinned inhabitants quite tanned. There is little semblance of a modesty taboo, although decorative clothing of light cotton or a local silk-like fiber is usually worn for social occasions. Since water is plentiful, most Sorellians in the settled regions bathe frequently, a custom viewed with suspicion by the nomadic herders of the interior. Sorellian food tends to be extremely spicy, and unsuspecting visitors are likely to have socially unacceptable reactions to Sorellian meals until their taste buds scar.
All of Sorel is theoretically ruled by the High Council, but in practice the nomads only pay tribute when forced to, and the Council's rule is limited to the agricultural regions. The Council is a representative body of sorts, being made up of 47 regional representatives who are appointed for life by the people of their districts. In practice, the positions tend to be hereditary. The council appoints and dismisses administrators for the smaller subdivisions from a pool of career bureaucrats and soldiers. These administrators serve as judges, with a right of appeal to the district representative. The system is cumbersome, since in practice a consensus is required before the High Council will actually do anything, but in the absence of a major outside threat it works well enough.
