Pimane is a low-population vacuum world, with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts, warranting hazardous environment precautions.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

Stellar Data[edit]

Pimane has a solitary primary star.

  • It is an orange main sequence.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

There are rumors that deep valleys on the surface of Pimane contain both atmosphere and life, although the surface plains are star-baked vacuum. [2][3]

It orbits within its star's habitable zone.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Pimane is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Pimane has a pressure of less than 0.001 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Pimane has no free-standing water or ice on the surface. Wilderness refueling isn't possible on this world. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are classified Desert World or a Hell World depending on their atmosphere.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

At first glance, Pimane appears to be nothing more than a struggling domed village on the surface of an inhospitable and featureless plain. Your first glance is correct.[4]

There is, however, evidence that deep valleys on the surface of Pimane contain both atmosphere and life, although the surface plains are star-baked vacuum. While there have been proposals to set up several small scientific research laboratories to investigate this, so far funding and offworld interest have been insufficient. The most accepted hypothesis holds that the world originally held an atmosphere and supported life, but a cataclysmic collision with a rogue world stripped off Pimane's atmosphere several million years ago.[4]

Reports of these air pockets are only as valid as the unproven reports of local explorers, who seem more interested in local notoriety than scientific accuracy. Regardless, exploration is very hazardous; local technology is hazardous enough, and the single city of Hope's End is far from the deep canyons that break up the surface of the planet. Add to that almost invisible pools of fine dust, some deep enough to swallow a starship, and incentive to stay home is very high. [4]

Not that staying home is very attractive. Hope's End is a dismal community, with few facilities for the traveller. The so-called Starport is nothing more than a concrete pad raised ten meters above the surrounding plain and kept mostly free of dust. Reactionless drives are compulsory to avoid stirring up any dust around the area. [4]

It is recommended that you bring all supplies with you. Off-planet goods are prohibitively expensive, and local food is all too obviously derived exclusively from the algae which replenishes the community's atmosphere, along with a locally grown fungus to provide texture. [4]

TAS Advisories[edit]

  • Do not use terrain-following on the surface.
  • Land only at the starport.
  • Only reactionless thrusters and contra-grav permitted.
  • Berthing fees are unusually high.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Pimane has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Pimane has a population of 9,000 sophonts (thousands).

  • This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The following languages are most commonly heard:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Pimane possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government (G)[edit]

Pimane is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

World Law (L)[edit]

Pimane has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.

Imperial Landed Nobility[edit]

Pimane, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: -3 (very unimportant)

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: 5 (scarce)
  • Labor: 2 (hundreds)
  • Infrastructure: 0 (non-existent)
  • Efficiency: -5 (extremely poor)

World Culture[edit]

  • Heterogenity: 1 (monolithic)
  • Acceptance: 1 (extremely xenophobic)
  • Strangeness: 2 (typical)
  • Symbols: 4 (concrete)
