Starships are designed with the Classic Traveller format, using High Guard Shipyard v1.13 written by Andrea Vallance.

The Guardwell class Fleet Destroyer is a TL–9 Destroyer and serves as a Military Vessel.

Description[edit]

The Guardwell-class Destroyer is a Military vessel. It is capable of jump 1 range. It is capable of two jumps on internal fuel supplies and can be fitted with addition jump 1 drop tanks if necessary for extended range patrols. Designed and built at the orbital shipyards of Trichinella (world). Used for local defense, they are typically encountered operating within the Zebylono Subsector of stars within the Iphigenaia Sector.

General Description & Deck Plans[edit]

The Guardwell class is a partially streamlined hull capable of gas giant refuelling operations.

Basic Ship Characteristics[edit]

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) where necessary. [1]

Basic Ship Characteristics [2]
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage / Hull The Guardwell class is constructed using a 3800 Ton hull built in a cylindrical configuration. The hull is an partially streamlined enhanced by the vessel's onboard gravitic systems.
  • Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls.
  • The craft has ten airlocks located on the outer hull. The cargo hold is accessed by large lateral hatches.
2. Crew Total Crew Complement: 99
  • x11 Command, x16 Engineering, x9 Gunnery, x18 Flight, x8 Services, and 37 Marines. There are 54 staterooms and the captain has a stateroom to himself the rest of the crew has double occupancy.

Accommodations
There are x54 Staterooms which are given over to crew quarters.

Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems.

  • There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency.
  • There are ten Emergency Lockers.
3. Performance / Engineering The vessel mounts a Maneuver-6 drive and a Power Plant-7, giving performance of 6-G acceleration and producing 266 Energy Points. The ship has an agility rating of 5. The dedicated internal fuel tankage gives the power plant 4 weeks duration.
  • The engineering section has a control room.
  • The jump drive utilizes a hull grid.
  • The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4. Main Section / Electronics Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/3 fib Computer: the ship has a backup Model 3 fib computer.
5. Hardpoints x38 hardpoints.
  • The battery arrangement is considered standard for the class. Alternative weaponry may be designated for specific routes.
6. Armament / Weaponry The normal fit-out for a Guardwell class is eight triple turrets and three 100ton weapon bays:

x4 Triple Beam Laser Turrets in a single factor 5 battery for anti-missile point defense and x2 Missile Bays, equipped to carry nuclear warheads for Anti-Shipping Missiles, and a single 100ton factor 6 particle accelerator bay.

7. Defenses The hull has factor 2 Heavy Armor and mounts four triple sand caster turrets in a single factor 6 battery.

a total of x12 Sandcaster racks are mounted as part of the ship's defensive array.

The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.

8. Craft / Subcraft Vehicles

x1 20-dTon Assault Lander and eight 8 ton Midget Fighters organized into a single interceptor squadron.

The hangar is a dedicated vehicle garage and forms part of the cargo hold. It is divided off by partition walls and also serves as a machine shop.

9. Fuel Treatment The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 1,026 dTons.
10. Cost The basic cost of the vessel, is MCr3,828.205 for the prototype.
  • If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price per unit to MCr3,062.564.
  • The vessel and its subcraft are locally produced custom designs. Detailed architectural plans are subject to a 38.282MCr. design fee is chargeable.
11. Construction Time 132 weeks (33 months) as standard.
  • Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12. Remarks Standard cargo capacity amounts to 30.3 dTons.
  • Sections of the hold may be isolated if desired and can be provided with specialized environmental conditions, typically refrigeration.

History & Background[edit]

The original hulls were commercial ore carriers which were retasked. A single prototype was delivered and tested. This vessel the RMV Guardwell underwent extensive trials and modifications including the addition of an assault lander, a small squadron of tiny fighters and a marine platoon. A smaller powerplant was fitted which restricted agility once the power hungry particle accelerator came online. A redundant computer was fitted to reduce work load over the primary ship network which tended to lag under heavy engagement with multiple target tracks. The powerplant modified and the heaviest layers of hull armor were stripped off to make room for more internal features. Thirty additional vessels have been completed to date and formed into three powerful destroyer flotillas. Typically one is held in reserve and the other two patrol neighboring star systems which it can reach. Armor was sacrificed to allow additional fuel tankage to increase operational range.

A government contract at the request of a grateful Regency of Muirimi government naval procurement office. Local shipyard space was set aside for the first hull number of the class. Field trials and shakedown cruises were completed within the parameters of general satisfaction of the regency admiralty.
