Caliburn is a ring of many small worldlets (planetoids AKA an "asteroid belt"), not capable of retaining an atmosphere or water, and nonindustrial in nature.

  • These worldlets warrant hazardous environment precautions.
  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • The worldlets require extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector in the Domain of Deneb.
  • Caliburn is a member of the Spinward Main.

System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data[edit]

Caliburn is an Asteroid Belt mainworld.

Asteroid Belt 03c.jpg

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Caliburn is an Asteroid Belt consisting of a few very large objects with diameters of hundreds of kilometers, thousands of bodies of a few kilometers in diameter, and millions of smaller objects.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

None of the bodies within the Caliburn belt retain an atmosphere.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

The Caliburn belt contains a few icy bodies. A few belt objects have frozen volatiles on their surfaces.

  • Wilderness refueling is possible within the belt, provided a suitable icy object can be found.
  • Water for the inhabitants is generally imported and is extensively recycled.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

No centrally held chart of the belt exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

Caliburn has generally been considered a superior source of exploitable resources to Bowman (Spinward Marches 1132), though the Caliburn belt is by no means as extensive as that of Bowman.

For most of their early history, the inhabitants of the Caliburn belt were too scattered and independent to be governed by any central authority, but in 539 they joined together to form the Caliburn Cooperative, which was set up as a company, and empowered to perform a limited number of government functions. The system joined the Imperium in 555 together with Caladbolg and Gunn.

Caliburn is the Latin version of Excalibur, the legendary sword of King Arthur, sometimes also attributed with magical powers or associated with the rightful sovereignty of Britain.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Caliburn has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Caliburn has a population of 900,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

Urbanization[edit]

The population live within facilities tunneled into large planetoids.

Linguistic Topography[edit]

The following languages are most commonly heard:

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Caliburn possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)[edit]

Caliburn is governed by a Corporate Polity, having a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. Essentially, this is a "company town" (or world). The typical corporate-run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families, including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.

World Law (L)[edit]

Caliburn has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Light assault weapons, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Imperial Landed Nobility[edit]

Caliburn, as a member world of the Third Imperium has a member of the Imperial Nobility overseeing the world.

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: -1 (unimportant)

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: C (very abundant)
  • Labor: 4 (tens of thousands)
  • Infrastructure: 3 (very limited)
  • Efficiency: -3 (poor)

World Culture[edit]

  • Heterogenity: 3 (monolithic)
