Dyrnwyn is a pre-agricultural, moderate population world with over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts in population size.
- Its economy and population are growing and living conditions are expected to slowly improve barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector.
- This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
- This world-system has a Sword Worlds Naval Base, usually associated with military starships, which may be located on or off-world.
- It also has a Sword Worlds Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces, which may be located on or off-world.
- Dyrnwyn is a member of the Spinward Main.
Astrography & Planetology[edit]
Dyrnwyn is tidally locked to "Rhydderch", its primary, despite sitting on the edge of the system's habitable zone. The near side of the planet is mostly ocean with a temperate climate, while the far side is frozen with average temperatures at the cold pole nearing -51°C.[2]
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stars[edit]
Dyrnwyn is a binary star system.
- The primary is an orange main sequence.
- The secondary is a red main sequence.
Binary Solar System
Mainworld Data[edit]
Dyrnwyn is very large and atypically still has a molten core. This produces a near-standard terrestrial magnetic field.
Atmospheric winds carry hot air to the far side at higher altitudes, forcing cool winds to blow back, resulting in somewhat extreme weather conditions at the very edge of the ocean. This makes ocean currents more complex but easily accommodated for by modern seafaring craft.
Mainworld Topography and Geography[edit]
A circular area of liquid water forms the only liquid ocean on the planet.
Dyrnwyn contains three main continents beneath the ice: Joekullvetur, Ny Groenland, and Eghvass. Other major land masses include the coveted Jarthlaug Islands in the ocean circle, which contain the settlement of Katlar. Both the capital city of Svartgardur as well as Ahgharad Starport are located on the Joekullvetur continent.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Dyrnwyn was formerly a member of the Sword Worlds Confederation. During the Fifth Frontier War, Dyrnwyn was invaded by Imperial troops on 233-1109 as part of Operation Azhanti Sunrise. Following the defeat of Sword Worlds forces, Dyrnwyn came under Imperial occupation and in 1110 was among the border systems that broke off from the Confederation to create the pro-Imperial client state called the Border Worlds Federation. In 1111 control of Dyrnwyn was returned to the Fortarn Conglomerate, the planet's Gungnir (Spinward Marches 1221)-based corporate owners, as part of a post-war goodwill package.
The Dyrnwyn ("White-Hilt") is said to be a powerful sword belonging to Rhydderch Hael, one of the Three Generous Men of Britain mentioned in the Welsh Triads.
World Starport[edit]
Dyrnwyn has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
Dyrnwyn's orbital port has no starship yards but it is very extensive, to support traffic on the Trailing Worlds Run and jump-2 traffic into the Imperium. A considerable amount of trade comes in by way of Arba from Lanth and Lunion and the Fortam Conglomerate maintains a trade fleet to service these routes along with supporting infrastructure. Lanth Dock and Lunion Dock are surrounded by some of the most prestigious businesses and entertainment venues in the system.
World Languages[edit]
- Sagamaal: The common tongue of the Sword Worlds Confederation. Its name references the intent that it evoke the language of ancient sagas of northern Terra -- or at least an idealised understanding of those cultures.
World Government (G)[edit]
Dyrnwyn is governed by a Corporate Polity with a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. A company town, or world. The typical corporate run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.
World Law Level (L)[edit]
Dyrnwyn has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Portable energy weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
World Technology Level (TL)[edit]
Dyrnwyn possesses a Technology Level of TL–10 or TL-A in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land & Water: Grav belts and maturing gravcraft.
- Air: Greatly improved hybrid grav-aircraft.
- Space: Improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-1.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 3 (ordinary)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: B (abundant)
- Labor: 7 (tens of millions)
- Infrastructure: C (very extensive)
- Efficiency: -1 (average)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 4 (harmonious)
- Acceptance: B (extremely friendly)
- Strangeness: 1 (very typical)
- Symbols: 6 (somewhat concrete)
