System Data[edit]

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

System Map Newcastle Basic 2.png

A chart depicting the Newcastle system, based on data provided in "The Flaming Eye".

Mainworld Data[edit]

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Newcastle is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Newcastle has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. A Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear and will likely be easy for most sophonts to breathe.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Newcastle has 65-75% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

A map of Newcastle, the nominated mainworld of the system, showing major bodies of water, large landmasses, and major highland regions.

  • Far more detailed maps are available locally.
  • Verified updated charts are constantly sought.
  • Detailed survey data commands premium prices.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

The Ancients were active on the world, placing many Terran species on its surface, including a population of Dolphins.

  • The Dolphins of Newcastle are believed to be extinct.

Newcastle is located on the Vilani Main, in the neutral space between the Imperium and the Vargr. The world was settled before the founding of the Ziru Sirka and until the Long Night it was known by its Vilani name, Khushuush Giiim. It hosted a Scout Base during the Rule of Man. It was overrun by Vargr towards the end of the Long Night but was never occupied. It remained neutral when the young Third Imperium's borders were fixed.

World Starport (St)[edit]

Newcastle has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)[edit]

Newcastle has a population of 80,000,000 sophonts (tens of millions).

Urbanization[edit]

Approximately 97% of Newcastle's population lives in small rural communities spread across the worlds continents. Its chief cities are:

  • Seward (population 873,000), an important agricultural center, the seat of government, and the capital city of the world.
  • Irwen (population 666,000), a major fishing center.
  • Gilhurn (population 327,000), primarily a fishing center.
  • Thurston (population 225,000) an important agricultural center and the site of the world's starport.
  • Charnelton (population 216,000), fishing and mineral extraction.
  • Morely (population 129,000), mineral extraction and processing.

World Technology Level (T)[edit]

Newcastle possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Advanced automobiles.
    • Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
    • Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
    • Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World Government (G)[edit]

Newcastle is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

World Law (L)[edit]

Newcastle has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).

Trade Data[edit]

  • Importance: 1 (ordinary)

Newcastle's primary products are agricultural and marine produce, computer software, documents and records, compounds, crystals, non-metal minerals, and metals.

World Economy[edit]

  • Resources: B (abundant)
  • Labor: 6 (millions)
  • Infrastructure: 9 (extensive)
  • Efficiency: +2 (good)

World Culture[edit]

  • Heterogenity: 8 (discordant)
  • Acceptance: 8 (friendly)
  • Strangeness: 6 (very distinct)
  • Symbols: 9 (somewhat abstract)

World Timeline[edit]

Major events that have affected this world and the wider region that it lies within:

History-Era: Rebellion[edit]

Newcastle has been under the control of numerous Vargr corsairs since 1104. During that year Vargr corsairs overwhelmed the relatively low-tech defenses and took over the planet completely. This system learned the hard way that system defense boats are essential for border planets.

  • It is believed that Newcastle has served as the jump off point for many of the Vargr corsair advances between 1113 and 1115.
  • Although clandestine surveys of the system have failed to turn up any conclusive evidence of a Corsair Base, computer analysis of traffic patterns repeatedly show Newcastle as the hub.
