Description (Specifications)

The Salinaikin Concordance is a confederation of worlds under the guidance of an elected council, with the council's membership drawn from among the leaders of its various member worlds. The state came into existence in the mid 700s and had reached its current size by the early 1000s.

The Concordance is possibly the last truly neutral state in the Far Frontiers: most of the sector's nations are effectively clients of either the Third Imperium or the Zhodani Consulate. But in three and a half centuries of existence, the Concordance has retained its neutrality and general good relations with all its neighbors. The Joint Defense Fleet serves to ensure the state's safety and to guarantee trade within its borders. The fleet is headquartered at the central naval facility in the asteroid belt at Manchu (Far Frontiers 0425).

The Concord

The individual planets in the Concordance remain free to develop as they please. Although many prefer to be as self-sufficient as possible, others choose specialization.

Despite the general peace, there are still some tensions around and within the Concordance borders, such as the rivalry between the Tannerite and Drakian state religions.

The Concord

The Concord, formally titled The Unanimous Declaration of the Concord of Salinaikin, is the founding document of the Salinaikin Concordance. It lays out the rights of citizens and also what expectations the state has of them, the nature of governmental authority, and the limits of governmental power.

  • Worlds that are signatory to the Concord agree to provide both manpower and materials towards its defense.
  • An unprovoked attack on any member world is considered an attack on all member worlds.

Individual worlds may choose to provide more than the minimum materiel amount required by the Concordance - this is most commonly done to win influence, power, and a place on the ruling council.

Individual worlds freely make agreements and understandings with other member worlds that entirely bypass the Concordance authorities.

History & Background (Dossier)

The original state was formed by Kalel Escott Salinaikin, founder of the respected Salinaikin Institute of Knowledge. He actually passed away two months before the convention that officially formed the nation, but his name lives on, not only in the name of the state, but in that of the asteroid belt where the capital is located.

  • It took Salinaikin many years to draw up the complex but elegant document that is the Concord.
  • Over the centuries, a number of amendments to the document have been made following landmark legal decisions.

Demographics

The following sophont races are found within the Concordance:

Linguistic Topography

The following languages are among the most commonly used within this astrographic region:

Culture

The Concordance lies within the Zhodani Shadow, a region strongly influenced by the society and culture of the Zhodani Consulate.

  • The Concordance goes out of its way to avoid becoming too "Zhodanified".

The open sanctuary on Groneitz (Far Frontiers 0730) where criminals, terrorists, and political undesirables find refuge from the law, is a thorn in the Concordance's side.
