The Haddox class Merchant Cruiser is a TL–9Freighter.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
These TL–9 vessels were the largest hulls that could be transported by the only available Assistance class Commercial Tender. The hulls were fabricated at Haddox and assembled in orbit with maneuver drives and power plants. They shipped to Naylyoeatru where surplus jump grids and obsolete TL–9 jump drives were installed. They were then shipped back -- at great expense -- for fitting out, testing and trials.
The vessels are semi-streamlined, allowing skimming refuelling maneuvers as well as landings in types 0 and 1 atmospheres. Atmospheric landings are otherwise impossible, hence the large complement of ship's boats. They were delivered unarmed. The weapons packages were fitted retroactively at the behest of more belligerent factions within the Haddox Association. They restricted themselves to light turret mounted weaponry. The Haddox were very pleased with the pulse lasers which nearly consumed all the ship's power aside from that allocated to the commercial grade model 3 computer. This installation lacks a dedicated fiber optical back up nor fail over abilities.
They are largely restricted to operations between member worlds of the Haddox Association; it is hoped they will provide some internal security capability while moving resources. The ship is designed to cope with long range operations. It carries enough fuel for 28 days of powerplant endurance and for two consecutive jumps without wilderness refueling. It has fittings for an addition 28 days of power plant fuel and another parsec of jump fuel in external drop tanks. Four 50dton cutters are carried to help with refueling, and to transfer cargo and personnel as dedicated interface craft. Fully fueled and appropriately equipped it is believed that this vessel could just barely reach as far as Tsehoynu Station, under extremis conditions.
Basic Ship Characteristics[edit]
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (...of ten subcraft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (...thousands of tons) where necessary. | Basic Ship Characteristics [2] | ||
|---|---|---|
| No. | Category | Remarks |
| 1. | Tonnage / Hull | 1,200 tons (standard), 16,800 cubic meters. Partially streamlined cylindrical hulls. |
| 2. | Crew | 32 with 12 officers and 20 enlisted. Crew divisions available to stand watch include 11 command, 1 engineering, 4 gunnery, 13 flight, 1 security and 2 service. There are 30 staterooms which are 24 double occupancy for the crew and single occupancy for the two High Passages and four Middle Passages. There are 66 Low Berth Racks for prisoners, security forces, or Low Passages. |
| 3. | Performance | Jump-1, 1-G acceleration. Power plant-1. 1,404 EP. Agility-0. They carry enough fuel, internally for two jumps. This gives them jump 1 strike range with enough for a strategic withdrawal. They can carry drop tanks with 28 days of power plant fuel and an additional jump 1 as needed. They are capable of 1 G acceleration and have emergency agility rating 1. |
| 4. | Electronics | A Model 3 computer is mounted adjacent to the bridge. |
| 5. | Hardpoints | 12 hardpoints. |
| 6. | Armament | one single missile launcher turret, and 10 single pulse laser turrets. |
| 7. | Defenses | A single sand caster turret. |
| 8. | Craft | Hangars for 4 x 50T Cutters. |
| 9. | Fuel Treatment | Fuel Scoops and On Board Fuel Purification. They are equipped with fuel scoops and on board fuel purification for wilderness gas giant refueling. |
| 10. | Cost | MCr416.813 Qty: MCr333.45 |
| 11. | Construction Time | 122 weeks standard. 98 weeks in quantity. |
| 12. | Comments | This ship is the first of her class and more are planned. |
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
These ships are envisioned to lessen reliance on, and compensate for the strategic limitations of, the single advanced Assistance class Commercial Tender currently available. In an effort to procure an inexpensive option given the logistical limitations imposed and their own acute awareness of their vulnerabilities, the Haddox Association has arrived at this design.
Ill suited to commercially profitable commerce with only 400tons of dedicated cargo and insufficient for military operations against any form of determined foe, it is at best a compromise design destined to leave any stakeholders inevitably disappointed. It may however represent an important first step. It is a tightly guarded state secret how many of these vessels are actually in operation currently.
Aside from the well documented premiere of the greatly heralded prototype, which debuted to great media fanfare to loyal citizens, little is known publicly of these vessels. Most in the Association seem unaware of the covert operations or existence of other hulls of this type.
