Ushra is an industrial world with a tainted atmosphere. The system has a population over one billion. This system serves as the capital for the subsector. This is a high technology world with available technology over the standards for Charted Space. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Ushra Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Ushra, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight (the Imperial representative to the world) and the fiefdoms of a count and the Subsector duke. All three are members of the Imperial Landed Nobility who oversee affairs regarding the world at an Interstellar and Imperial level. This world has a nearby Imperial Naval Base, capable of handling warships. Less than 10% of the world's population is the Major Race Aslan. Less than 10% of the world's population is the Minor Human Race Ziadd.
Astrography and Planetology[edit]
Ushra is a member of the Dagudashaag Main. It is also, specifically, part of the Ushra Cluster. The naval base hosts elements of the 188th Fleet.
Stellar Data[edit]
Mainworld Data[edit]
Ushra is a world of fire and ice. Tidally locked to the super-jovian gas giant Cocchinus, Ushra receives sufficient infrared radiation to create a narrow zone of habitable temperatures between about 20° and -100° of the terminator. Water boils at relatively low temperatures under the planet's tenuous atmosphere, giving rise to the Mare Fervens or "Seltzer Sea". Intense "slick storms", where moisture nucleates around dust particles, and rains out as muddy slurry, are a frequent occurrence in the temperate zones.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Ushra is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Ushra has a pressure of 0.10 to 0.42 atmospheres. The very thin pressures require a respirator or Oxygen Mask. This atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds, which requires the use of a Filter Respirator Combination Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–5 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Ushra has 45-55% of its surface covered by liquid water. Wilderness refueling is possible.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
At various points in Ushra’s history, its primary star Sangis has undergone episodes of intense activity, pushing back Cocchinus’s magnetospheric bowshock to within Ushra’s orbit and bathing the main-world with intense doses of particulate radiation. Other cultures would burrow deep under, to escape this hazard, but the Ushrans approached it in an entirely different manner. Shortly before the onset of the Long Night, they made a racial decision to use genetic engineering to give them greater radiation resistance. This meant that subsequent generations would have to be produced in vitro, in shielded artificial wombs, where the necessary changes could be carried out with maximum precision. All citizens were sterilised upon reaching adulthood. When they were judged fit to take care of children, each partner would provide a cell sample. The genetic material would be combined and any errors corrected using molecular machines. The result was a population which was totally free of genetic disease and which steadily became more resistant to radiation.
The Ushran government has imposed comprehensive restrictions on the import of live plant and animal specimens, to protect their newly terraformed regions from contamination. Veterinary clearance papers should be obtained from the Ushran Consulate at the port of departure.
Travellers are not permitted to bring their own personal communicators for use on Ushra, as all the microwave frequencies which are able to penetrate the gas giant Cocchinus' broad-spectrum roar are monopolised by the Imperial Navy. Efficient personal beamcast communicators are available locally.
The main faculties of the Free University of Ushra are located on the world.
Imperial Landed Nobility[edit]
Ushra, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial Landed Knight who acts as an Imperial representative to the world, and the fiefdoms of two members of the Imperial Landed Nobility, who oversee affairs regarding the world at an Interstellar and Imperial level.
- It holds the estate of an Imperial knight, the Imperial representative to the world.
- It holds the fiefdom of an Imperial count.
- It holds the fiefdom of an Imperial subsector duke, who also conducts affairs regarding the entire subsector at the Interstellar and Imperial level.
- See: Nobles of Ushra
- » Doctor Frater Ganidiirsi Ling Simalr, F.O.A., is the heir-designate to the Duchy of Ushra in the Dagudashaag Sector and consort of the Grand Princess Ciencia Iphigenia.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Ushra has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- There is an associated Imperial Naval Base, hosting the headquarters of the 188th Fleet.
World Population (P)[edit]
Ushra has a population of 9,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
World Demographics[edit]
- 81.2% (7,308,000,000) Imperial Human (Solomani-Vilani fusion)
- 9% (810,000,000) pure Vilani
- 5% (450,000,000) Aslan
- 3.5% (315,000,000) S'mrii
- 1% (90,000,000) Ziadd
- 0.3% (27,000,000) other minor races
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The primary languages are Core Anglic and Vilani. Minority Languages include NeoTrokh, Sfuizia, and Terran German, Greek and Spanish.
Urbanization[edit]
Cities include the following:
- Iliumn: 1.765 million, Starport A;
- Athene: 869 million, Starport A;
- Aeneas: 557 million, Starport A;
- Diomedes: 434 million, Starport A;
- Jason: 116 million, Starport B;
- Sparta: 12 million, Starport A [Authorised Imperial Military Traffic]
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Ushra possesses a Technology Level of TL–15 or TL-F in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Meson Communicators and Pseudo Reality Communications.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, improved collectors, and advanced Fusion+.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land & Water: Advanced gravcraft.
- Air: Advanced gravcraft and speeders.
- Space: Advanced gravcraft and G-Carriers.
- FTL: Jump Drive-6.
Technology[edit]
Ushra is a TL–15 world pushing out the edges of TL–16 technology. It is the only Industrial world in Dagudashaag Sector with such a high technology level, and so occupies an important position in the sector’s economy. Interestingly, the democratic nature of Ushra's government has meant the advanced technology has reached the general population far sooner than might otherwise be expected (the highest levels of technology are often monopolised by the military in many systems). The standard of living enjoyed by the population is second to none.
Eden Orbital Naval Complex is a large facility devoted to shipbuilding and repair of naval vessels. A great deal of development work is done at the complex, directed towards the production of prototype TL–16 naval vessels. Several successful designs have been produced so far, the largest of these being the 40,000-ton strike cruiser Alexander Brayden. Other research work is carried out at naval installations elsewhere in the system. Reports that the Navy has established an antimatter production and containment facility insystem have been consistently denied.
Ushra is the headquarters of the Ushra Subsector offices for Zirunkariish.
World Government (G)[edit]
Ushra is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
World Law (L)[edit]
Ushra has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
World Culture[edit]
Ushrans are classical philanthropists, deeply interested in improving the living conditions of their fellow sophonts. The major interstellar relief agency Medicins Sans Frontieres is based on Ushra, and gains much of its funding from the population. Ushran efforts have brought greater freedom and democracy to many surrounding systems.
This would be all well and good were it not for their attitude towards genetic purity. Ushrans have a deep-rooted fear of people with such horrifying genetic disorders as red/green colour blindness, myopia (short sight) or protruding ears. This is encapsulated in the Ushran dialect word for foreigners -- 'glitches', people who are somehow damaged. Travellers are not likely to encounter any problems in the major urban areas where off-worlders are common. In outlying areas such as the Rimwall district of Jason, however, it is not unknown for traders to refuse to serve people with visible "defects".
ALL travellers to Ushra are required by planetary law to undergo a genetic examination, usually in the form of a simple blood test prior to landing on Ushra.
