General Description[edit]

The Gravid class is a fighter carrier with 2-G and J-3 performance. It is equipped with decent sandcaster defenses, electronic countermeasures and jamming gear, and laser turrets that are most commonly used in a point defense role. The design is unstreamlined and cannot operate without either in-system facilities or support craft.

The hull is unstreamlined and cannot operate in an atmosphere. Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls. There are x3 personnel airlocks. The cargo hold is accessed via a large hatch. It may be used as an additional airlock. Subcraft docking tubes may be used as additional airlocks.
2.	Crew	x66 personnel. x8 command, x2 engineering, x8 gunnery, x45 flight, and x3 service. The command crew consists of the Captain, the Executive Officer, an Operations Officer, two electronics officers (commo and sensor ops), two pilot/navigators, and a medical officer. Each crew section has a senior officer. Accommodations There are 39 Staterooms. Staterooms are configured to what the Jaibok consider to be comfort. All Staterooms are given over to the crew. x12 are single occupancy and are set aside for selected command personnel, x27 are double occupancy. Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems. There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off. There are multiple emergency lockers.
3.	Performance	The vessel mounts a Jump-3 drive, a Maneuver-2 drive, and a fusion Power Plant-3, giving performance of Jump-3 and 2-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 1 and an emergency agility of 2. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for one Jump-3 and gives the power plant 4 weeks duration. The engineering section has a main control room. The jump drive utilizes a hull grid. The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4.	Electronics	Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/4 fib computer. A backup Model/4 fib is installed in engineering. There are multiple workstations and control points throughout the vessel. The vessel is fitted with communications equipment and an advanced sensor array. It is equipped with a sophisticated ECM package and Jamming Equipment. It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command.
5.	Hardpoints	x10 hardpoints. The listed weapons systems are typical for the class.
6.	Armament	The normal weapons fit-out for a Gravid class is: x4 triple Beam Laser turrets, grouped into two batteries of 2 linked turrets.
7.	Defenses	The hull has no additional armor. x6 triple Sandcaster turrets, grouped into three batteries of 2 linked turrets. The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.
8.	Craft	The intrinsic subcraft or visiting vessels attach to the hull exterior. Docking tubes join to the cockpit or airlock, forming a pressure-tight seal and allowing crew or passengers to transfer between the two vessels without the need for vacc suits. The docking tube must be released and retracted before launch. Flight Section: x20 13-dTon Hostility class Fighters. x2 10-dTon Fetch class Launches. Smallcraft require their tonnage x1 in terms of mountings or hangars on vessels of 1000 dTons or less. External hull structure dedicated to mounting subcraft amounts to 280 dTons. All subcraft mounted on a dipersed structure hull may launch simultaneously.
9.	Fuel Treatment	The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 330 Tons. The hull is not fitted with fuel scoops. The vessel is not equipped with a fuel purification plant.
10.	Cost	The basic cost of the vessel is MCr646.572 Architects Fee: MCr6.466 If multiple examples of the design are ordered all vessels in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price per unit to MCr517.258 The price does not include the cost of the subcraft: x20 Hostility class Fighters cost MCr290.8 (including a bulk order discount). x2 Fetch class Launches cost MCr9.856 (including a bulk order discount). With its full complement of subcraft, a discounted Gravid class costs MCr817.914
11.	Construction Time	118 weeks as standard, 95 weeks in bulk. Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12.	Comments	Standard cargo capacity amounts to 8 dTons. The hold has independent life support and environmental systems. It can be sealed and isolated.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The Gravid class Escort Carrier is an ubiquitous type of warship used by the Korsumug Empire, typically serving as a major component in patrol groups. Early low-jump examples of the class served on the Korsumug Main, where their powerful complement of fighters provided flexibility and firepower.

The type was designed by the Jansa, a minor race closely allied with the Jaibok. Examples of the Gravid class can be encountered throughout Mavuzog Sector and Theta Borealis Sector.

A number of redesigns with more powerful drives were fielded as the Korsumug Empire began to venture to worlds further from the Main. This ultimately resulted in the KE10c variant, equipped with a Jump-3 drive. Sacrifices had to be made in the original design to accommodate the increased fuel load, principally achieved by reducing the number of fighters the vessel carried.

Many of the vessels in the class are built at the naval shipyards on occupied Felspar.
Gravid class carriers often pair with a Growler class Tanker.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities[edit]

Vessel Peculiarities:
The vessel has average performance. It is not capable of independent operations.

The class have powerful sensor arrays and communications equipment.

Physiologically, neither Jaibok nor Jansa cope well with low berths and they are not routinely fitted to Korsumug vessels.

Earlier variants of the class were fitted with low berths in order to transport prisoners, a feature that has been removed as internal space issues have become more pressing.

Class Naming Practice/s:
Vessels of the Korsumug Empire are given alphanumeric designations and callsigns by other interstellar states. KE refers to Korsumug Empire (a designation applied to all Korsumug combat units), 10 is a multiple of hundreds of tons of displacement and also indicates at a glance the number of weapons mounts, and 'c' refers to the version of the vessel, relating to its construction tech level and bracketing its maximum jump potential. Type codes will often repeat: 'Gravid' is an easy to remember name to identify the specific type of vessel.

Individual vessels are generally named by their crews.
