Thanber has both an unbreathably thin atmosphere and a lack of surface water making habitation by sophonts difficult. The system has a population between 10,000 and 10 million, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. It is a client state of Third Imperium in the Querion Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector. Thanber is a poor, nonindustrial world.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- This world has few prospects for economic development.
- It is a client state of the Third Imperium in the Querion Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector.
- This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
- It is a chilly tundra world, with a climate of low temperatures.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Thanber is a binary star system.
- Both are red main sequence stars.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x7 secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 planetoid belt.
All eight of the rocky worlds in the system orbit the star Than, as does the planetoid belt. Than II, III, and IV are unremarkable icy rocks, none larger than Thanber, while the outer planets are all notably smaller. None of them have any atmosphere or mineral resources of note. When Thanber was first colonised all of the secondary planets were surveyed and mapped, but there are no permanent settlements on any of them. The Thanber Belt has been little explored but seems to be mostly dirty ice chunks.
Thego, the system's distant secondary star, has no known planets circling it and has seldom been visited.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Thanber is tidally locked to the system's primary star.
- The star is always high in the sky on the bright face, it hangs on horizon in the twilight zone, while the cold dark face is in permanent darkness.
- The world experiences libration - a regular wobble - as it orbits, causing the star to move in the sky.
It orbits within the primary star's habitable zone.
- It receives moderate levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Thanber is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Thanber has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences low temperatures within the twilight zone.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Thanber has 25-35% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants will be recycled.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
- Locally, detailed maps may be available.
The world experiences "seasons", which relate to its slow but pronounced wobble as it orbits the primary star. Local Winter corresponds to the point when the star is lowest on the horizon when viewed from a fixed point within the twilight zone, while Local Summer corresponds to when the star is relatively high in the sky when viewed from that same point. Shallow, rather salty seas cover 34% of the surface, mostly in the twilight belt around the edge of the dayside. Their depth varies as icemelts from the borderlands of the darkside supply water during the summer, with some drying up again during the winter as ice refreezes.
(Blank map, predominantly dry world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
All native vegetation is very dark in color, ranging from dark green to blue-black, to maximise sunlight absorption.
A source of much of the pollen that taints the atmosphere is the Thanber Blackwood Tree, which is common in the twilight zone regions. It grows very tall, around 30 metrers on average. Thanber blackwood is used for building materials locally but is too fragile in higher gravity fields to be of anything but ornamental use, so is not often exported.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Thanber lies at the edge of a region between Zhodani space and the Darrian Confederation. It combines the technical and political requirements of an ideal pirate haven – it is watched carefully by both the Imperial Navy and the Zhodani naval forces.
The Imperial Navy maintains a courier route with the Imperial frontier at Frenzie via Thanber.
Thanber was first surveyed by Darrian explorers from Entrope. The Darrians appreciated the blackwood forests, but the atmospheric taint, lack of extensive water, and somewhat remote location precluded large settlement attempts. They maintained a research station but the world was not formally claimed. A few Sword Worlds hunting expeditions also showed little permanent interest in the world. It was not until the First Frontier War (589–604) that someone thought Thanber worth colonising. After a Zhodani raid on Vilis, there was an exodus of refugees to surrounding systems, Thanber included.
Zhodani traders make planetfall on Thanber more often than might be expected, and the Imperium is of the opinion that many of these are at least subsidised by the Consulate, if not full agents. Zhodani influence on the world has been most notable in the increasingly tolerant attitude of locals towards psionics. It is rumoured that Thanber University has become the site of an underground Psionics Institute.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Thanber has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Thanber has a population of 2,000,000 sophonts (millions).
- This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Riftian Galanglic, one of the principal dialects of one of the two official languages of the Imperium. It is spoken with a slight spinward accent.
- Sagamaal, spoken by a small community of ethnic Sword Worlders resident on the planet.
- Vilani, one of the two principal languages of the Imperium.
- Zdetl, the language of the Zhodani Consulate.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Thanber possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-3.
World Government (G)[edit]
Thanber is governed by a Feudal Technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a fief to an individual or group. Leadership of these fiefs determines the head of the government.
The world's ruling technocrats are supported by Tukera Lines, who own the Starport, which is guarded by Tukera mercenaries rather than Imperial marines. The corporation's costs are loaded onto visitors in the form of high tariffs on almost everything. The technocrats are opposed to any other power gaining a foothold in their system.
Local Nobility[edit]
World Law (L)[edit]
Thanber has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
