Lorrain is a verdant tropical (Tr) world with an oxygen-rich dense and humid atmosphere resulting in a high-temperature climate.
- As a nonindustrial (Ni) world, this planet cannot yet manufacture enough high-technology resources to support a modern, star-faring society. Having to import many manufactured and high tech goods drives the price for these goods up in the open market.
- Although endowed with a lush ecosystem, this planet is categorized as a preagricultural (Pa), as it does not yet have the population and industrial base necessary for large-scale planetary agriculture. Foodstuffs both harvested and foraged still constitute a major part of what exports it does have.
- Much of the planet's high technology and miniaturized electronics are of Droyne origin from the nearby Droyne-populated world of Dahlia. The Droyne themselves avoid the planet completely.
- It is located within a system-spanning nebula, which can render the world and its star difficult to locate without guidance, specialized transponders, or intimate knowledge of the system. It can also interfere with many communication technologies.
- It is a colony world sponsored by members of the Hive Federation.
- It is a non-aligned world dominated by human sophonts, located in the Tempri subsector of Hinterworlds sector.
Astrography & Planetology
Stellar Data
The primary of the Lorrain system is Sünei, a solitary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.57 Sol, a mass of 0.894 Sol, a radius of 0.9092 Sol, and a diameter of 0.9094 Sol at 1.265 million km.
System Data
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- ×3 secondary rocky worlds.
- ×4 large gas giants.
- ×1 planetoid belt.
The primary is Sünei, a solitary yellow main sequence star. The inner system consists of (I) Skoot, a very large tidally locked inferno world, and (II) Kramen, a dense-atmosphere stormworld; the designated mainworld of (III) Lorrain orbits within the habitable zone, including the moons Coco and Snow; the cold zone is dominated by the four large gas giants (IV) Pixie, (V) Hoishi, (VI) Mamba, and (VII) Iamir, of which only Mamba is ringed, but each retaining a number of unnamed satellites; the medium-sized thin-atmosphered radworld of (VIII) Sava'tak trails well into the frigid outer system; twice the distance beyond that lies a thick and dense (IX) planetoid belt that remains unmapped due to difficulties relating to the density of the pervasive nebula that stretches roughly 11 000 AU throughout a significant portion of the system's designated parsec, known simply as the Lorrain nebula.
- Due to the size and density of the Lorrain nebula, minor misjumps are common and potentially disorienting, making it hard to find the relative positions of the astrographic features necessary for stellar cartography and navigation.
- It is unknown how the Lorrain nebula persists within the measurably ancient Lorrain system. Proposed models include both periodic stellar ejecta that would result in extinction events not supported by fossil records and complex gaseous releases from one or more of the system's gas giants not observed elsewhere.
Mainworld Data
Lorrain is a tropical rocky world.
The mainworld orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.
- It lies within the zone's warmer inner H+ region.
- It receives relatively lower levels of stellar energy than it normally would at its relative distance from its star.
- It has an unusually strong magnetic field for its size.
- It has an orbital period of 271 days, 4 hours, 40 minutes, 47 seconds.
- It has a rotational period of 27.07 hours.
Mainworld Size (S)
Lorrain is a world with an approximate diameter of 9834 kilometers. The horizon will appear at about 3.1 to 4.4 kilometers away at a height of 1-2 meters, at about 9.9 to 14.0 kilometers at a height of 10-20 meters, at about 31.4 to 44.3 kilometers at a height of 100-200 meters, and at about 99 to 140 kilometers at a height of 1000-2000 meters.
- Physical Characteristics:
- Lithosphere/Crust: Silicate Minerals.
- Core: Nickel/Iron (~2700 km)
- Solid Inner Core: ~1000 km
- Liquid Outer Core: ~1700 km
- Mass: ~3.20109 × 10^21t (0.536 Imperial Standard)
- Density: ~7000 kg/m3 (1.571 Imperial Standard)
- Gravity: ~0.951G
- Escape velocity: ~9.321 km/s
- Magnetic Field: ~39.6-46.4 μT (~1.41 Imperial Standard, fluctuating)
Mainworld Satellites
- 2 Large natural satellites:
- Both are ice-capped and barren rad worlds with no atmosphere, tidally locked to the mainworld.
- While Coco is highly reflective, Snow's surface is covered in a regolith of amorphous carbon and tholins resulting in an unusually low albedo, making it appear almost black in the daytime sky.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)
Lorrain has a dense atmosphere with a pressure of ~2.4 standard atmospheres. A mildly dense atmosphere requires no survival gear under normal circumstances, although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it, potentially resulting in discomfort or the exacerbation of health issues. The relatively high oxygen content has proven conducive to invertebrate and arthropod megafauna, while the high carbon-dioxide content feeds rapid floral regrowth and expansion. Large clouds define the skyline and cloudless skies are all but unheard of. Thick fogs at ground level are common. Seasonal torrential cyclonic storms are common but usually benign.
- Atmospheric Composition:
- Nitrogen (N₂) ~69%
- Oxygen (O₂) ~30%
- Argon (Ar) ~0.3%
- Carbon-dioxide (CO₂) ~0.1%
- Others (?) ~0.6%
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)
Lorrain has very little of its surface covered by open liquid water or ice, with 55-65% of its surface covered in deep, oceanic marshland. It has a few small seas surrounded by swamps, and wilderness refueling is possible but difficult.
Mainworld Geography and Topography
Lorrain is almost completely covered in dense jungle, swamps, and marshes, with a landscape defined by hills and valleys where the border between the dense forest and the overgrown wetlands is often deceptive. Rapid and shifting floral growth can render day-to-day navigation difficult, especially from underneath the canopy.

Native Lifeforms
Lorrain appears to have no native life forms in the astrobiological sense, and all local flora and fauna appears to have been transplanted from other interstellar origins in the distant past, although it has proven impossible to trace to any single source. The evolutionary genesis of various catalogued lifeforms appears to originate variably from Aslan, Solomani, Hiver and even K'Kree space, and some appear to even have hybridized over a vast timespan.
History & Background (Dossier)
Lorrain was settled as a colony fairly recently, after having been discovered inside the nebula at the turn of the new Imperial millennium. It is sponsored by members of the Hive Federation and inhabited primarily by humaniti settlers from there.
World Starport (St)
Lorrain has a Class D Starport, a poor-quality installation which has few amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there are plenty of parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Like most ports of this classification, the Lorrain port consist of only a downport. Despite its low quality, it is taken well care of, routinely cleared of weeds and growths.
World Population (P)
Lorrain has a population of ~40,000 sophonts.
- Due to its relatively low population, this is a non-industrial world, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish for its industrial base.
- The population consists almost entirely of humaniti.
- The colony operates mostly as a large commune, with largely shared resources. Living quarters are assigned and food prepared centrally.
World Technology Level (T)
Lorrain possesses an approximate technology level of TL–8.
- Common communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, advanced radio and satellite communications, and data networks.
- Common power generation technologies for this TL include: Advanced fission power generation, improved geothermal, and advanced water and wind and solar-cell generation of electricity, as well as improved batteries for energy storage.
- Common transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles, hovecrafts, and ATV's.
- Water: Advanced amphibious vehicles and submersibles, triphibians, improved hydrofoils, and early artificial gills.
- Air: Advanced aircrafts, improved helicopters and VTOL's, and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, advanced intercontinental ballistic missiles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- Due to the absence of an exhaustive industrial base, Lorrain often deviates significantly from its average technological level. It is highly reliant on imports from both the strongly Droyne-populated world of Dahlia (TL-11) and the Humaniti-dominated system of Hike (TL–5) nearby.
World Government (G)
Lorrain is governed by a de facto feudal technocracy. Society divides itself based on the technical requirements of the society. Each of these functions are granted as a form of fief to an individual or group. The leadership of these various fiefs collaborate to determine the head of the government and/or state. Political relationships are ostensibly based on the performance of technical activities for mutual benefit.
- The official governing body of Lorrain is the Colonial Authority, but in reality most power is informally divided between section heads responsible for shared public functions and project leaders.
World Law (L)
Lorrain has a moderate law-level of 6, with laws covering many areas of government and interactions. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials are present, but not in any great numbers. Almost all firearms except shotguns and equivalent weapons for hunting and self-defense, and anything more clandestine or destructive, are prohibited in public spaces, which extends to most of the colony. Enforcement is largely lax unless breaches are egregious or obvious, but punishments harsh when deemed necessary.
