The Luriani of Daramm (Ley 0812) are a Minor Human Race with a humanoid appearance and are technologically advanced sophonts.
A passionate people known for their demonstrative behaviour and large, tight-knit families, they are stereotyped as emotionally volatile. They are found primarily in the Luriani Cultural Association, a sub-polity of the Third Imperium.
Biology (Physical Sophontology)[edit]
The Luriani are a Minor Human Race, and are one of the few truly amphibious Human races.
The Ancients performed extensive genetic engineering to adapt the Luriani to the water world that is their home, including providing them with webbed feet and hands, and the ability to dive to much greater depths than normal Humans. Unlike most minor Human races, the Luriani are classified as a separate species: Homo luriani. As such, they are not interfertile with other Humans without extensive genetic engineering.
The Luriani body contains a much higher amount of blood than most Humans, averaging around 8.3 litres for a healthy adult male. Also, like some Terran marine mammals, they can dramatically slow their metabolism and starve non-essential organs of blood. These modifications provide the ability to survive in an environment lacking oxygen for up to an hour. In addition, Luriani have lines of modified nerve endings that allow them to detect minute changes in pressure in their surroundings. This allows them to detect the direction and distance of movement underwater. These nerve endings also function in air, but with much less definition. Finally, their skin excretes several natural oils that protect them from irritants.
Evolution & Environment (Epigenetics)[edit]
This species originated on Daramm, the product of genetic manipulation of Human stock.
The Luriani brain diverges from the Human norm. Areas usually given over to speech and language are dedicated to processing additional spatial information, and the speech centres themselves are located in areas more normally associated with music and singing. The Luriani are thus naturally at home thinking in three dimensions and are strongly drawn towards music.
Sophonce (Evolution)[edit]
The base species developed intelligence in response to climactic factors.
Climate & Ecotope (Environment)[edit]
This species holds the following environmental preferences:
- Terrestrial planet (water world)
- Temperate climate
- Oceanic ecotopes (aquatic adaptation)
- Standard gravity
- Standard atmosphere
Anatomy & Physiology (Phenotype)[edit]
Sophontologists studying this species have discovered the following data.
Body Plan (Morphology)[edit]
Mammalianoid
- Humanoid
- Bilateral symmetry (2-ial)
- Tetrapod (4-ped)
- Two limbs used for manipulation or "arms"
- Two limbs used for locomotion (biped) or "legs"
- Body consists of three segments
- Head with sensors and multiple-use orifice (consumption, communication, and respiration)
- Torso with manipulatory limbs
- Abdomen with locomotor limbs
Biochemistry (Function)[edit]
This species has a conventional carbon-water based biochemistry.
Respiration (Reaction)[edit]
This species employs a conventional respiration cycle consisting of:
- Oxygen-nitrogen inhalant
- Carbon dioxide exhalant
Diet & Trophics (Consumption)[edit]
- Omnivore/gatherer
- Homeotherm
- Apex predator
- This species favors a mix of foodstuffs.
Gender & Sexuality (Reproduction)[edit]
This species has the following reproductive characteristics:
- Two genders (male & female)
- Mild sexual dimorphism
- (sexual reproduction)
- Conjugal intercourse
- Varied mating systems (primarily serial monogamy) (1m:1f average)
- Viviparous birth
- (Iteroparous): Uses K-selection and have few offspring that require considerable amounts of time to raise to maturity.
Psychology (Cultural Sophontology)[edit]
The race has a widespread reputation for being highly emotional and unpredictable. They are also noted for their mistrust and dislike of Vilani due to their near cultural genocide during the Ziru Sirka in a unique event known as the 'Year of Woe'.
Culture & Society (Ethnology)[edit]
Their culture is based around close knit family groups and governed by extensive rules of etiquette and honour. Luriani are best known for their artistic and musical achievements.
Subcultures include the Wurlana.

- Aaca, commonly known as Standard Luriani.
Several older languages remain in use, almost always relegated to the status of secondary languages:
Social Organization: 1116[edit]
The Imperium has established an Order of Knighthood specifically for loyal Luriani citizens: The Order of Eerynaaia.
Luriani titles almost always follow the name, in contrast to the Imperial mainstream. Brandon Minomoru, the Luriani Archduke of Gateway, is known as Brandon Archduke not Archduke Brandon. There are three exceptions to this rule:
- The title Madam, used to refer to the matriarch of a Luriani upper class extended family.
- The titles Vice Chair and Councillor used by the Luriani Cultural Association.
- The titles Lord Protector, Lord Councillor and Lord Assemblyman, used by the former Luriani Protectorates.
Civilization (Societal Sophontology)[edit]
The civilization and society of this species is known as the Luriani Cultural Association.
Astrography[edit]
This race is primarily located in the following areas:
