Lysh

A short sword, regarded as the traditional weapon of the Luriani.

The lysh is a leaf-bladed sword suitable for wielding in either one or two hands. Designed for use in confined spaces or underwater, it is the normal dress blade of the Luriani military.

The lysh is not normally made of metal, but of wood. When properly treated, wood from the arbusodt tree takes on the properties of high carbon steel. Despite the unusual materials used in its construction, arbusodt wood so used has a high metal content and is very dense.

Varieties[edit]

There are several different type of lysh, varying in method of production, cost, and availability.

  • The most common are reproduction lysh, not made of arbusodt wood but from other materials, then coated to mimic the appearance of a traditional lysh. Reproduction lysh are commonly available and cost Cr. 100 each.
  • Mass-produced lysh, constructed from traditional materials, are manufactured by machine and thus their patterning is random. They are easily obtainable on most Luriani worlds and cost Cr. 300.
  • True lysh are crafted by master weaponsmiths using techniques handed down through generations. There are probably only 10,000 people alive who know the techniques for their manufacture, and each creator has a distinctive signature patterning. Cost starts at Cr. 2,500. Availability is often restricted, with long waiting lists.
  • The green lysh is extremely rare. Very occasionally, flaws in the treatment process of the arbusodt wood result in a lysh with green streaks in addition to the normal black and crimson. If one is available at all its cost might start at Cr. 100,000.
