Orcrist is a fluid world with oceans of a liquid other than water such as ammonia, methane, or hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquids. This world is a satellite of a gas giant or another planet in the system and is tide locked to the planet it orbits. It is a member of Sword Worlds Confederation in the Sword Worlds Subsector of Spinward Marches Sector and in the Sword Worlds. This world supports a Sword Worlds Military Base and the system supports a Sword Worlds Naval Base.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)

Stellar Data

Orcrist is a binary star system.

  • The primary is an orange main sequence named Thorin.
  • The secondary is a red main sequence named Thranduil.
Orcrist has two stars in the star system.

System Data

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

The Orcrist system has two stars, the primary Thorin and its companion, Thranduil. They lie approximately 0.32 AU apart.

Mainworld Data

Orcrist, designated the mainworld, is the sole moon of the large gas giant Dvergur. Orcrist is tidally locked to Dvergur, keeping one side permanently facing its giant primary world. It orbits at a distance of 3 diameters (approximately 450,000 km), and has an orbital period of 41 hours 31 minutes.

In addition the primary star, Thorin, appears to circle Orcrist as well.

Gas Giant Moons 09b.jpg

The mainworld and its gas giant primary world orbit within the prime region of Thorin's habitable zone.

  • The gas giant is "puffy", warm and swollen due to the levels of energy it receives from the star.

Mainworld Size (S)

Orcrist is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Orcrist has an Exotic Atmosphere and possesses an unusual gas mix which requires the use of oxygen tanks. Additionally, protective suits, while not necessary, are recommended. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Orcrist has 55-65% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice heavily tainted with other substances, which makes it dangerous, corrosive, or toxic. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds may be Hell Worlds.

  • The water on the surface may be unsuitable for use or consumption without extensive filtering and purification.
  • Refining for fuel may cause issues with shipboard purification plants.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)

Orcrist is a relatively young world with a normal climate. The world is undergoing terraforming, seeding the surface with algae and bacteria to convert the atmosphere into a more normal oxygen-nitrogen mixture. See: Orcrist Soil Manufacturing Project.

Orcrist's capital city is Grevistad; its Downport is Groenhamm Starport.

World Languages

World Military

Despite its significant industrial base and large population, Orcrist has a small military. It contributed more than its share of funds to the Confederation budget, but its own navy is almost entirely defensive in nature.

Trade Data

  • Importance: 3 (ordinary)

World Economy

  • Resources: A (abundant)
  • Labor: 6 (millions)
  • Infrastructure: C (very extensive)
  • Efficiency: +1 (average)

World Culture

  • Heterogenity: 4 (harmonious)
  • Acceptance: A (very friendly)
  • Strangeness: 2 (typical)
  • Symbols: 7 (somewhat concrete)
