Description (Specifications)

A generic class of civilian vessel, the Provincial Freighter is a commercial transport typically encountered operating within clusters of stars within the Distant Fringe region. It is classified as a Bulk Cargo Carrier and is constructed as a conventional design. Similar designs have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.

1.	Tonnage	The Provincial Freighter is constructed using a 3,500 dTon hull built in a generally conical configuration. The hull is fully streamlined, giving good atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by its onboard gravitic systems. There are multiple airlocks located around the vessel. The cargo hold is accessed by large doors and has a loading ramp. The vessel has sturdy retractable legs, allowing surface landings.
2.	Crew	x37 personnel. x9 command, x5 engineering, x7 gunnery, and x11 service, of which one serves as flight crew for the Ship's Boat when required. In addition, the vessel carries x4 passenger stewards and a medic. Accommodations There are 48 Staterooms. 23 Staterooms are given over to the crew. The command crew have individual cabins: all other crew quarters are double occupancy. Up to 25 High Passengers may be carried. The stewards attend to their needs. There are 100 Low Berths, primarily used to transport livestock. Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems. Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency. There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off. There are multiple Emergency Lockers.
3.	Performance	The vessel mounts a DeVoss-type Jump-1 drive, a Maneuver-2 drive, and a Power Plant-2, giving performance of Jump-1 and 2-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 2. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for one Jump-1 and gives the power plant 4 weeks duration. The engineering section has a main control room. Ladders, gantries and platforms give access to the machinery. The jump drive utilizes a hull grid. The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4.	Electronics	Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/2 computer: the vessel has a backup Model/2 computer. There are multiple workstations and control points throughout the vessel. The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, a basic sensor array, and has an avionics suite. It is fitted with backup commo and sensor systems. It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command.
5.	Hardpoints	x35 hardpoints. The listed weapons systems are typical for the design. Alternative weaponry may be designated for specific routes. There are 3 unused hardpoints and 3 dTons are set aside for fire control.
6.	Armament	The normal weapons fit-out for a Provincial Freighter is: x12 triple Beam Laser turrets, forming two batteries each of 6 linked turrets
7.	Defenses	The hull is unarmored. x20 triple Sandcaster turrets, forming two batteries each of 10 linked turrets
8.	Craft	Flight Section x1 40-dTon Ship’s Boat. The subcraft is housed in a dedicated hanger: the hangers can be sealed and has a total volume of 40 dTons.
9.	Fuel Treatment	The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 220 dTons. The hull is not fitted with fuel scoops. The vessel is not equipped with fuel purification equipment.
10.	Cost	The basic cost of the vessel is MCr1,501.957 If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price per unit to MCr1,201.566. The vessel and its subcraft are standard designs. Detailed architectural plans are widely available and no design fee is chargeable.
11.	Construction Time	84 weeks (21 months) as standard. Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12.	Comments	Standard cargo capacity amounts to 2,400 dTons. The cargo hold can be sealed and has independent life support and environmental systems. Sections of the hold may be isolated if desired and can be provided with specialized environmental conditions, typically refrigeration.

The design is representative and a large number of variants exist, particularly with regard to the allotted weapons systems, onboard electronics, and the fit out of internal spaces.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities

A number of companies manufacture ships equivalent to the Goliath class. They vary in hull shape and internal layout but all share the same basic design and all have very similar capabilities and performance characteristics.

• Each variant class is named by the company that produces it: these organizations generally draw on traditional naming protocols. It is not uncommon for a historical class name to be reused.
• Individual vessels within a class are issued specific serial numbers and transponder codes but traditionally are named by their first crew, though from a list of approved options. This is considered a serious affair and a ship with a frivolous name is considered "unlucky".
