Turku is a poor, moderate population pre-industrial hellworld, with over a hundred million, but not yet a billion sophonts struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • This world would like to become a major industrial powerhouse in the subsector, but lacks the population and resources to build an adequate workforce and industrial business sector.
  • This is a cold world with an overall climate that is at the lower temperature range of human-congruous sophont endurance.
  • This world is also the overall capital of an interstellar government with the massive extra trade and prestige associated with that role.
  • This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or over technology standards for Charted Space.
  • It is a member of the The Reach in the Reach Subsector of Crucis Margin Sector.
  • This world-system hosts a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships, which may be located on or off-world.
  • The majority of the population is human.
  • A little under 10% of the population is composed of Hivers.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]

The Turku Wastes: Home to the Reach's only Naval Base, within the Reach Subsector of the Crucis Margin Sector the 'self defense' squadron made quite a name for themselves.

  • The port became the headquarters for a band of infamous corsairs. What was interesting is the dramatic similarities between a particular light escort vessel ordered for fleet operations and the most commonly encountered pirate raider. The Turku Class Light Escort are an unwelcome sight to merchant captains.

Mainworld Size (S)[edit]

Turku is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]

Turku has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]

Turku has 15-25% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. There may be a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

In the 700s, an alliance of Turku and Ranua created the Turku-Ranua Guaranteed Trade Corridor, known even by its own people as The Reach.

World Starport (Sp)[edit]

Turku has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)[edit]

Turku has a population of 100,000,000 sophonts (hundreds of millions).

World Demographics[edit]

Humaniti, population 95%

  • Hiver, population 5%: A Trade Mission

World Government (G)[edit]

Turku is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

All five worlds of the Reach are self-governing, but contribute funds and forces to the Reach Conclave, which includes representatives from all worlds in proportion to their economic importance. It is based at the orbital cityport of Turkan Ima.

World Law Level (L)[edit]

Turku has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).

World Technology Level (TL)[edit]

Turku possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.
