A Drone is an unpiloted vehicle or spacecraft.

  • Most drone spacecraft are considered U-class Utility Craft.
  • They are known by a variety of names.
  • They come in every size, mission, and type imaginable from nanocytes to munition-sized microdrones to mesodrone small-craft to macrodrone big craft.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

Drones: These are vehicles that are controlled by an operator from another point, usually a starship. Unlike missiles, drones are not built to be used up with each mission but are intended to be reused. However, since they have no crew, they can be abandoned or placed at great risk if necessary. [1]

Supraclass Roles[edit]

Drones typically serve the following roles:

  1. Combat Drone (UDQ)
  2. Construction Drone (UDG)
  3. Countermeasure Drone (UDQ)
  4. Courier Drone (UDX)
  5. Deception Drone (UDL)
  6. Defense Drone (UDQ)
  7. Drone (ZD) (Namesake)
  8. Fire Support Drone (UDQ)
  9. Fuel Drone (UDF)
  10. Suicide Drone (UDQ)
  11. Mine Drone (UDQ) (Explosive Weapon)
  12. Mining Drone (UDG) (Ore Processing Device)
  13. Probe Drone (UDL)
  14. Recon Drone (UDL)
  15. Reconnoissance Drone (UDL)
  16. Repair Drone (UDG)
  17. Rescue Drone (UDX) (as their purpose is to move people)
  18. Science Drone (UDL)
  19. Sensor Drone (UDL)
  20. Survey Drone (UDL)
  21. Target Drone (UD)

Size-Class Roles for Drones[edit]

  1. Nanocyte (X < 0.001 ton) (UD) (when not classed as munition)
  2. Microdrone (X < 1.0 ton) (UD)
  3. Mesodrone (Smallcraft) (UD)
  4. Macrodrone (Bigcraft) (ZD)

Supraclass Archetypal Roles[edit]

These vessels and munitions typically serve the following archetypal roles:

Type UD and ZD Drone Supraclass Archetypes
Archetype Type Code/s Exemplar Remarks
Drone AKA Microdrone OR Mesodrone UD TBD None
  • U = Utility, Multipurpose, etc.
  • D = Drone
Fuel Drone UDF Icepick class Fuel/Ice Harvesting Drone Fuel drones (if under 100 tons) are Type-UDF craft.
  • U = Utility, Multipurpose, etc.
  • D = Drone
  • F = Fuel
Mining Drone UDG Mint class Mining Drone Mining drones (if under 100 tons) are Type-UDG craft.
  • U = Utility, Multipurpose, etc.
  • D = Drone
  • G = Industrial
Probe Drone UDL MOLRASP class Sensor Drone Probe drones (if under 100 tons) are Type-UDL craft.
  • U = Utility, Multipurpose, etc.
  • D = Drone
  • L = Science, sensor, research, laboratory, etc.
Combat Drone UDQ System Defense Brick class Defense Drone Refers to any drone where the primary purpose is combat, or to deter via a show of force the possibility of combat. Most armed drones are UDQ-Type.
  • U = Utility, Multipurpose, etc.
  • D = Drone
  • Q = Combat support craft
Courier Drone UDX Zip class Courier Drone Since smallcraft are incapable of traveling faster than light (thus, laser and radio outpace them for communications), Type-UDX craft are used for carrying small cargoes (relative to what even a typical Tramp Vessel can carry), including hardcopy communications which can not or should not be transmitted (such as physically sealed orders, and sometimes key individuals in tense situations who must quickly cross long ranges between hostile fleets while demonstrably unarmed and unescorted, where either the individual can not pilot or the drone must be recovered).
  • U = Utility, Multipurpose, etc.
  • D = Drone
  • X = Courier, comms
Drone AKA Macrodrone ZD TBD Large naval drones are categorized as Type-ZD craft if they do not have a more specific type and mission code.
  • Z = Special Mission Craft
  • D = Drone
