Bayou is a high-population, industrial world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.
- As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
- Its economy is rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to rapidly improve barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Talpaku Communality in the Talpaku Subsector of Yiklerzdanzh Sector.
- This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
- This world-system has a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships, which may be located on or off-world.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Bayou has a solitary primary star.
- It is a yellow main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been partially surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- An unknown number of secondary rocky worlds.
- x2 planetoid belts.
- x2 gas giants.
Mainworld Data[edit]
The mainworld orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.
- It lies within the zone's prime H region.
- It receives moderate levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Bayou is a Meso World between 8,800km and 10,400km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.6G and 0.8G. The horizon will appear about 4.4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Bayou has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- Talpaku have small lungs, adapted to the high oxygen taint of their homeworld. To live in a standard atmosphere involves an adaptation period, but is achievable so long as the world also has a high oxygen taint, as Bayou does.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Bayou has 65-75% of its surface covered by liquid water. It has significant large liquid bodies. Wilderness refueling is possible.
- The coasts are fringed in dense, tangled, forested wetlands.
Satellites[edit]
Bayou retains three small vacuum moons.
- They orbit once every few weeks.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.
(Blank map, predominantly watery world.)
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Bayou was one of the five systems settled by Talpaku when the Talpaku Communality was founded.
Bayou is the home port of Free as Air Trading, which trades from the Talpaku trailing worlds along the jump-2 route up to the Meichntid Ibl and the Zhodani Consulate beyond it. This merchant line is wholly owned by a single takh, the members of which form the permanent employees.
The Night Mist Line interface line, a partnership based at Talpakuhome, operates 1000-ton jump-2 ships from Talpakuhome to Carillon. The partnership finds trade along this set route (visiting Bayou in addition to Heaven's Scent and Forday's Fortune) to be sufficiently profitable that it rarely strays from this path.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Bayou has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- The world is host to a Talpaku Naval Base.
World Population (P)[edit]
Bayou has a population of 7,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
- The population almost entirely consists of Talpaku.
- A few humans and other sophonts may be encountered.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
Talpaku, a language comprised of whistles and clicks, is commonly used on the world.
- Talpaku cannot vocalize human sound, and even the most skilled humans can only poorly imitate spoken Talpaku.
- Language Translators are widely used for inter-species communication.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Bayou possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-3.
World Government (G)[edit]
Bayou has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
World Law (L)[edit]
Bayou has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
World Economy[edit]
Each world in the Talpaku Communality has its own currency, the values of which fluctuate against each other according to economic circumstances.
There is a "reference" unit of currency called the kuyo, which is used by the Communality government, by multistellar companies, and for transactions between individuals and companies on different worlds.
World Culture[edit]
The world lies within the Zhodani Shadow, a region strongly influenced by the society and culture of the Zhodani Consulate.
Every 9 Talpaku years, the annual Festival of Life is preceded by a 3 day Festival of Sport. This great sporting event is staged on one Talpaku planet (selected at random during the previous extended Festival). One team may be entered from each stellar system. The series is extremely popular and recordings of each match are sent away as soon as possible. Like the Tea Clippers of ancient Terra, the first ship to bring a recording of a match to a given world receives a premium price for it.
World Timeline[edit]

- 995-1065: The Second Survey charts the system.
- 1065: The Second Survey is published.
