Pergatory is a low-population fluid world with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts.
- A fluid world has an oceanic geography consisting of heavily contaminated water or a substance such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquid.
- It is a member of The Protectorate in the Inverness Subsector of Far Frontiers Sector.
- It is a member of the Caractacalla Scatters.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Pergatory has a solitary primary star named Kerrone.
- It is an orange main sequence.
System Data [2][edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld, orbiting at 0.7 AU.
- x8 secondary rocky worlds. The named worlds include:
- Delios (orbiting at 0.4 AU), Shazan (orbiting at 1.0 AU), Kashar (orbiting at 2.8 AU), and Anathazh (orbiting at 10.0 AU).
- Four small unnamed vacuum worlds orbit in the far outer system.
- x1 unnamed planetoid belt lying at 1.6 AU.
- x1 gas giant, Alcost, orbiting at 5.2 AU.
Mainworld Data[edit]
The mainworld orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.
- It lies within the zone's warmer inner H+ region
- It receives higher levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Pergatory is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Pergatory has an Exotic Atmosphere and possesses an unusual gas mix which requires the use of oxygen tanks. Additionally, protective suits, while not necessary, are recommended. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences high temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Pergatory has 85-95% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice heavily tainted with other substances, which makes it dangerous, corrosive, or toxic. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds may be Hell Worlds.
- The water on the surface may be unsuitable for use or consumption without extensive filtering and purification.
- Refining for fuel may cause issues with shipboard purification plants.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
A basic map of Pergatory showing the chem-tainted seas (green), landmasses (tan), and highlands (pale brown).
- Narbert, a small community denoted as the world's capital, is ringed in red. The surface starport is marked by a red cross.
- Other settlements are marked by red dots.
(Based on the world map of Pergatory, page 47 GURPS Atlas of Charted Space 3)
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
As a member of The Protectorate, Pergatory sends a specially selected Representative to the High Council, the polity's governing body.
- The role is prestigious and is highly sought.
- The Representative gains the role by persuasion, manipulation, bribery, or by force.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Pergatory has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Pergatory has a population of 1,000 sophonts (thousands).
- This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.
- The population has Zhodani, Imperial, and Vlazhdumecta heritage.
- Some families can trace their ancestry to pre-Long Night Vilani colonists.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
- Local languages descended from Vlazhdumecta.
- Riftian Anglic, a dialect of one of the two principal languages of the Imperium.
- Zdetl, the language of the Zhodani and the Zhodani Consulate.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Pergatory possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovision, Personal Global Communications, and advanced Translators.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Increasingly advanced fusion plants and advanced fuel cells.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-2.
World Government (G)[edit]
Pergatory has no central government or substantial government apparatus; an Anarchy. The largest governmental structure would be a family, tribe, or single clan. The largest group will be between 50 and 100 individuals, and there may be dozens to hundreds of them. This governmental structure can be stable over long periods of time if the population remains small or geographically separated.
World Law (L)[edit]
Pergatory has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 1 (ordinary)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: 7 (few)
- Labor: 2 (hundreds)
- Infrastructure: 1 (extremely limited)
- Efficiency: -3 (average)
World Culture[edit]
The world lies within the Zhodani Shadow, a region strongly influenced by the society and culture of the Zhodani Consulate.
- Heterogenity: 1 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: 4 (extremely aloof)
- Strangeness: 1 (very typical)
- Symbols: 7 (somewhat concrete)
World Timeline[edit]
- 300-420: the First Survey charts the system.
- 995-1065: the Second Survey charts the system.
- 1065: the Second Survey is published.
