Maya is a Meso World between 10,400km and 12,000km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.7G and 0.9G. The horizon will appear about 4.7km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Maya has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

• The world is tectonically active with sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide from hundreds of volcanoes fouling the air.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Maya has 95-100% of its surface covered by liquid water with only a few islands and archipelagos. Wilderness refueling is possible. Such worlds are Water Worlds or Ocean Worlds.

History & Background (Dossier)

Maya is a major political and economic power in the region.

Maya had representatives at the Council of Worlds agreement which defined the Tellerian Cluster as a non-conflict zone. It was influential in pressuring Drien into accepting the agreement. Note that contracts between major Mayan shipping lines and Hyperion Interstellar Services have led to lucrative deals to provide heavy escort support to Mayan merchant shipping. A clause in these contracts allows HIS to 'actively investigate and pursue' any attacks on Mayan assets, providing a way for Maya to overcome restrictions imposed by the Council of Worlds Agreement.

World Starport

Maya has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. All firearms except shotguns, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Culture

Opportunities for advancement in mining, interstellar trade, the military and government, plus high technology products and services available to all, allow Mayans to see themselves as a successful, orderly people. They can come across as condescending to foreigners.

World Timeline

• 718: Permanent settlers arrive.
  • Not considered a prime target for colonisation, Maya prospers under the sponsorship of the Mayan Development Corporation (MDC).
• 801: Karelian signs a free trade agreement with Maya.
• 833: A general strike prompts the MDC to bring in mercenaries to restore order. The commander of these forces, Colonel Petra Khimshaga, objects to the use of lethal force and turns on her employers, seizing corporate assets.
• 835: Khimshaga wins a provisional election to become Premier of the Independent Republic of Maya.
• 931: A constitutional convention turns the premiership into a lifetime position chosen by an elite Electorate of 80 senior executives of ministerial departments.
• 1015: The Mayan Star Navy expel a corsair band from a system on the edge of the Tellerian Cluster and claim the system in the name of the premier, changing its name from Noram to Cinhoss and establishing a permanent presence.
• 1080: The quarantine of Emerling eliminates that world's trade route to Maya.
• 1089: Maya attends the Council of Worlds on Telleria (Vanguard Reaches 1308).
