Nithus is a poor, nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often develop intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
- It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by indigenous Sophonts located in the Banderhue Subsector of Theta Borealis Sector.
- This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or above the standard for Charted Space.
- It is the homeworld of the Captutians.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Nithus has a solitary primary star.
- It is an orange main sequence, named Mettari.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x7 secondary rocky worlds.
- x1 planetoid belt.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Nithus is a Twilight Zone World.
- One side of the world permanently faces towards the star and one side permanently faces away.
- In the narrow region between permanent night and permanent day, the primary star eternally hangs on the horizon.
It orbits within the prime region of its star's habitable zone.
- It receives moderate levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Nithus is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Nithus has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. While the thin atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
- It experiences generally moderate temperatures within the twilight zone.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Nithus has 05-15% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. Wilderness refueling will be difficult. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.
- Much of the surface is an arid, hostile environment.
- Small seas and lakes lie around the twilight zone and parts of the bright face.
Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]
A map of Nithus, the nominated mainworld of the system, showing major bodies of water, major highland regions, coastal wetlands, and vast forests.
- Far more detailed maps are available locally.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant but declining native life occupying a wide variety of habitats. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Native life thrives in arid conditions.
Flora:
There are few complex plant forms in the oceans of Nithus; most are less than a centimetre in size. A large kelp-like form is the most numerous of the complex plants. On the planet's plains, light blue-green grasses stand around a metre tall. At frequent intervals, food processing factories dot the plains. The planet has trees, noted for their impressive size.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Nithus is an ecologically failing world, a situation caused by past conflicts -- culminating in large-scale nuclear exchanges -- that wreaked considerable damage. Its inhabitants strive to preserve what they can, halt the spiralling decline of their home, and generally improve their situation.
- Many areas of the surface are heavily irradiated.
- The resources of the system are being exploited.
It is the homeworld of the Captutians.
- They are large, heavily-built, fur-covered humanoids with peaceful temperaments and telepathic abilities.
- They once numbered in the hundreds of millions, but now only a few remain.
- First contact occurred millennia ago.
A number of organizations and private interests are active within the system.
- Commercial traffic is frequent: ships regularly arrive and depart.
- Commo is filled with signals and private chatter. Communications are in Captutiani and Riftian Anglic.
- Multiple commercial navigation beacons will be active.
- A number of vessels may be operating among the other worlds and moons that make up the system.
Note that social data, though only 40 years old, may be out of date.
- Verified updated data is constantly sought.
World Starport[edit]
Nithus has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
- The downport is widely considered a beautifully designed complex. To the north of the main complex is the area designated for heavy transports that engage in interplanetary trade.
World Demographics (P)[edit]
Nithus has a population of 100,000 Captutians.
Urbanization[edit]
A few small but advanced urban areas, each surrounded by isolated structures and compounds.
- Settlements are located around the twilight zone.
- Almost all of the surface of the world is wilderness.
- Natives travel between settlements mainly by capsule population movers. These large, plastic, tube-like systems can carry 100 or more citizens, shooting through the tubes at high speed.
Many areas are dotted with the crumbling ruins of ancient, once grand cities.
- The heavily radioactive Ruins of Zanal are particularly noted.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Nithus possesses a Technology Level of TL–13 or TL-D in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Holovideo recorders.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, prototype collectors, advanced fusion plants.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land, Water & Air: Personal G-Tubes and advanced gravcraft.
- Space: Advanced interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
- FTL: Jump Drive-4.
World Government (G)[edit]
Nithus is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
The leadership body of Nithus is the Council of Twelve. At the Building of Absolute Power (the name amuses many Humans, since the locals are actually rather humble) the main floor houses a large courtroom for four Judgement Supremes, who apply the laws made in the council chamber.
World Military[edit]
A token force of some 8,000 personnel, largely performing ceremonial roles. Military units are known as Brenalfors. They are small and self-contained.
World Law (L)[edit]
Nithus has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Machine guns, other automatic weapons, portable energy weapons, and other military weapons, body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: 8 (moderate)
- Labor: 4 (tens of thousands)
- Infrastructure: 5 (limited)
- Efficiency: -2 (fair)
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 1 (ordinary)
World Culture[edit]
- Homogeneity: 2 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: 6 (aloof)
- Strangeness: 2 (typical)
- Symbols: A (abstract)
World Timeline[edit]
- 300-420: The First Survey charts the system.
- 995-1065: The Second Survey charts the system.
- 1065: The Second Survey is published.
