• The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
• As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
• It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Regulus Subsector of Alpha Crucis Sector.

Darina is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Darina has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. While a Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Darina has 95-100% of its surface covered by liquid water with only a few islands and archipelagos. Wilderness refueling is possible. Such worlds are Water Worlds or Ocean Worlds.

History & Background (Dossier)

Darina is a water world with a majority population of uplifted Dolphins. It is a rarity in the Solomani Confederation for having a government dominated by Dolphins.

The name Darina may be derived by the Terran Slavic word 'Dar' which means 'gift'. This is likely due to the world's 'gifting' to the recently uplifted Dolphins during the Rule of Man.

Dolphin activists from Darina have been agitating to convince the Uplifted Ape populations on Pijo to be more assertive in ensuring their overall social status relative to Humans.

World Starport (Sp)

Darina has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

Darina has a population of 800,000 sophonts (hundreds of thousands).

Darina is settled by Dolphins and Solomani colonists. The Dolphins are a majority with the Solomani composing only 20% of the population.

  • This language, also known as Delphinese, involves various clicks, rasps, chirps, creaks, hoots and whistles. Due to the spread of Dolphins across Charted Space, it has evolved into a multitude of dialects. It can take a Dolphin some time to learn a new dialect; errors are often seen by both parties as humorous.
  • For communication with humans and other races, most Dolphins speak ordinary, if flowery, Anglic.

World Government

Darina is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

Darina is one of the few worlds in Alpha Crucis to have an uplifted Dolphin majority that holds political power. The elected leaders of Dolphin megapods dominate the planetary parliament, although the constitution requires that certain cabinet positions always go to Solomani.

Darina has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.

Due to the world's hydrosphere it was seeded with Dolphins near the end of the Second Imperium. Today it is culturally and politically dominated by the Dolphins, a situation which likely originated during the Long Night.
