Auritaurus is a low-population world with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts in size.
- This world has yet to take off economically or otherwise and the population remains low for reasons largely unknown.
- It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Khouth Subsector of Corridor Sector in the Domain of Vland.
- This is a cold world with an overall climate that is at the lower temperature range of human-congruous sophont endurance.
- This world has an Imperial Scout base, capable of handling IISS starships and personnel.
- In the initial First Survey data this world was named Esla Ges.
- It is a member of the Dzarrgh Run.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
Auritaurus has a solitary primary star.
- It is a white main sequence.
System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld.
- x8 secondary rocky worlds.
- x2 planetoid belts.
- x1 gas giant.
Mainworld Data[edit]
The mainworld orbits within the star's Habitable Zone.
- It lies within the zone's colder outer H- region.
- It receives relatively low levels of stellar energy.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
Auritaurus is a Meso World between 12,000km and 13,500km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.8G and 1.1G. The horizon will appear about 5.1km away. Vessels with 1G of thrust should check with local starport authorities before attempting to land using emergency power.
Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Auritaurus has a pressure of 0.43 to 0.70 atmospheres. The Thin Atmosphere does not require survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- It experiences low temperatures.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
Auritaurus has 85-95% of its surface covered by liquid water with a few small continents, and a number of islands and archipelagos. Dry land is limited. Wilderness refueling is possible.
- The world's oceans are littered with icebergs and pack ice.
Satellites[edit]
Auritaurus retains a single vacuum moon.
- It orbits once every few weeks.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Abundant primarily aquatic native life occupying every available ecological niche. Its metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
- Native lifeforms are cryophilic - they thrive in very low temperatures.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Auritaurus is a member of the Dzarrgh Run, a small but important Main crossing between Tuglikki, Provence, Deneb, and Corridor Sectors.
- High cargo capacity, low jump rating vessels move among its systems, carrying vast amounts of goods and commodities between its member worlds.
(Chart sourced from Traveller Map)
- Worlds lying on the Run are highlighted in tan.
World Starport (St)[edit]
Auritaurus has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which features amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
- The world is host to a Scout Base.
World Population (P)[edit]
Auritaurus has a population of 6,000 sophonts (thousands).
- This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.
Linguistic Topography[edit]
The most commonly heard languages are:
- Anglic, one of the two official languages of the Imperium.
- Vilani, one of the two official languages of the Imperium.
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Auritaurus possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles.
- Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
- Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World Government (G)[edit]
Auritaurus is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is by representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referenda, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.
World Law (L)[edit]
Auritaurus has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Light assault weapons, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: -2 (very unimportant)
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: 8 (moderate)
- Labor: 2 (hundreds)
- Infrastructure: 0 (non-existent)
- Efficiency: -4 (very poor)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: 1 (monolithic)
- Acceptance: 1 (extremely xenophobic)
- Strangeness: 3 (somewhat typical)
- Symbols: 6 (somewhat concrete)
World Timeline[edit]
Major events that have affected this world and the wider region that it lies within:
- ca -250,000: The Ancients are active within the region, transplanting the Vargr onto Lair.
- -9235: The Vilani discover jump technology. A few explorers and settlers begin to pioneer the region.
- -4045 to -2204: The Ziru Sirka claims a few rimward worlds and establishes a firm border. The Windhorn Rift and the absence of any significant Mains discourages large-scale Vilani expansion into the region.
- -3810: The Vargr discover jump technology and begin an era of expansion.
- -2400s: Vargr raiding into human-dominated areas significantly increases. This becomes known as the Vargr Pillaging.
- ca -1700: Vargr rimward expansion gradually ceases: the border between human and Vargr space stabilizes.
- -1776 to 0: The Long Night. There is widespread regression within the area and some worlds become barren.
- The Year 0: To rimward-trailing, the Third Imperium is founded.
- circa 26: The Empire of Varroerth is founded.
- early 100s: The Contract of Taarskoerzn is founded.
- 300-420: The Imperial First Survey charts the system.
- early 400s: The Irrgh Manifest is founded: it absorbs the Contract of Taarskoerzn.
- mid 500s: The Knokseng Confederation is founded.
- 869: The Glory of Taarskoerzn is founded. It splits the Irrgh Manifest.
- 995-1065: The Imperial Second Survey charts the system.
- 1065: The Second Survey is published. Information about the system becomes widely available.
- 1080s: The Knokseng Confederation is dissolved.
- 1090: The Dzarrgh Federate is formed.
Later Eras[edit]
New Era[edit]
Auritaurus ("Golden Bull") is a frozen ice-world that, in the past never garnered significant attention from the larger powers. Most of the population assisted smugglers and Vargr corsairs in evading Imperial border patrols, and were given a share of the profits. The world changed hands several times between the Third Imperium and various Vargr states, and when the Dzarrgh Federate took it in 1116, the locals did another perfunctory shift in their nominal allegiances, changing paperwork and accepting Federate bureaucrats. An allied corsair band announced that it would handle all customs inspections through the main starport, but they had actually been doing that for years previously, and the Federate was inclined to accept the status quo.
The arrival of Virus in 1139 wiped out the Dzarrgh Federate as a governing body. With anarchy descending upon the sector, most of its local officials and allies fled in panic, leaving the failing world to its own devices. Virus itself did not affect the communities' life support and data systems, which were too stupid to actually support infection, and Vampire fleets never visited the obscure little world at any time in the last sixty three years. In the midst of this chaos a psionically gifted offworlder calling himself "Seer" Kiirishi suddenly appeared not too long after the Federate had pulled out. Despite the distrust of the locals, Kiirishi used his clairvoyant and telekinetic abilities to assist them in repairing damage caused by the loss of interstellar contact, and he established a benign dictatorship that enabled the world to survive, if not prosper.
The starport suffered only minor damage during a spate of looting following the collapse of the Federate, but several non-functioning starships were abandoned by the Vargr. When Kiirishi died in 1151, the locals repaired a couple of free traders using parts salvaged or adapted from the other hulks, and the crews were sent out to find other psionically adapted individuals. The next leader was a brilliant but somewhat unstable Vargr psion known only as Graegvuer; after his death in 1155 the locals concentrated upon searching nearby worlds for psionically trained humans only. Seer Gilliam is the sixth seer thus far, and one of the more benevolent. Despite the increasingly ragged state of the world's two free traders, he has encouraged his people to forge offworld ties with groups in Deneb and Tuglikki Sector, in the hopes of staving off another bout of anarchy after he dies.
