While [[Jovionoid]] is still considered rare within [[Charted Space]], many Imperial scientists feel that this is because the environmental and biological needs of [[Jovionoid]] species are very different than those of conventional terrestrial life. So the two have had little opportunity to interact fully, and in many cases, are not searching for each other. It is widely thought that a comprehensive program to search for Hydrogen-breathing [[Jovionoid]] life would turn up many other such species, and that while many of them would be primitive pre-spacefaring civilizations, the existing starfaring [[Jovionoid]]s have already proven that such life is viable.

Jovionoid is the typoid classification of creatures with Gas Giants as their native world. Jovionoids are considered unconventional life.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The term Jovian derives from the Terran system planet Jupiter, the largest gas giant in that system. The world of Jupiter has no lifeforms.

In practice, Jovionoids are flyers or floaters and breathe hydrogen or hydrogen compounds with alternate biochemistries. Jovionoid civilizations are sometimes called "Hydrogen Societies."

It is known for conventional lifeforms to develop very similar biologies, physiologies, and appearances to jovionoids and to be found on terrestrial worlds. These are usually cases of parallel evolution.

Jovionoid in Charted Space[edit]

Jovionoid Lifeforms are still considered rare within Charted Space. There are numerous reports that they are much more common outside of its boundaries. The relative rarity of Jovian creatures within Charted Space is usually explained somewhat unconvincingly as a consequence of several interrelating factors. It is thought that a comprehensive program to search for hydrogen-breathing Jovionoid life would turn up many other such species, and that while many of them would be primitive pre-spacefaring civilizations there would be a small portion who have evolved to become more advanced sophonts.

Specific Species examples[edit]

Charted Space knows only a handful of Jovionoid species:

Worlds & Sectors (Astrography)[edit]

Jovionoids tend to be prolific species and experience much less competition for worlds than conventional, terrestrial life.
